April 1, 2003 - Pepsi Center; Denver Colorado
Sue Bloyer: I'm still savoring last night's show at Denver's Pepsi Center! As I write, I'm listening to the mp3 for the show (order the bootleg!!) and still love it. I agree with the other writer - this is probably the best form I've seen them in, and I have several concerts under my belt. Far better than the Seattle concert in December. I had great Fan Club seats - 6th row - so I had fantastic visibility. It was such a treat to watch them enjoy themselves, smiling or laughing (Jeff and Stone, too). Someone behind me didn't like my sign held high above my head (BLACK on one side and I (heart) Pearl Jam on the other), but I got to hear it. I'm sure Mike saw the sign, but I don't know about the others. Everyone was incredible. It was funny watching Mike and Stone try to coordinate the timing on a chord when one or the other missed. They were very good-natured about it, with a smile or giggle. I went into 7th heaven when I heard Porch (one of my live favs), then Black, Crazy Mary (which far exceeded previous live versions), a wild Go, and Rockin' in the Free World. And I was in ecstasy even before that. Such a night. I'm looking forward to seeing them in Omaha and in my home state, Minnesota. Every show is different, so who knows what treat I'll hear next. At least I have Denver in my hot little hands to savor. And one of Ed's guitar picks, thanks to someone in front of me alerting me to its presence.
Thanks, guys! You were wonderful last night. Carter Durham (CPDurham@aegonusa.com): Well, I've been a loyal fan since Ten, but I've just never been able to get to a concert. Finally the stars aligned and I made it last night. I was excited to hear Love Boat Captain as the opening song, 'cause that's my favorite track off the new record. And then following it up with Hail, Hail was awesome--another favorite of mine. I thought Eddie's joke about being in Salt Lake was funny--I'm actually from Salt Lake. I'm not sure why so many people in the crowd didn't get his humor--did they forget it was April 1st or something? Anyway....I loved Insignificance, Cordurouy, Porch, Given to Fly--everything, I guess. Of course there were plenty of songs I wish they would have done, but that's more a testament to the band than a complaint about the concert. Crazy Mary was unbelievable. What can I say....they sure can put on a show. Thanks PJ.... DeAnne: What an amazing show!! Sleater-Kinney opened. I heard that they were really good. I was not disappointed. And seeing Pearl Jam members on the side of the stage enjoying their music was nice to see. For others who have a chance to see Sleater-Kinney, get to the venue early, you don't want to miss them. I have seen Pearl Jam a few times and I swear they get better with age. Mike McCready's solo at the end of Even Flow was incredible. Ed and Stone just stood back and watched him as if he never ceases to amaze them. Everyone looked like they were enjoying themselves and seemed excited about playing to an energized Denver crowd.
The setlist had a good mix of new and old. One of the things I really love about this band is their ever changing setlists. You never know what you are going to get. And that just adds to the excitement of seeing them play live.
A funny moment came when somebody tossed a glow stick towards the stage. Ed tried to catch it and said "It's a scud".
Great show!!
DeAnne Milkjug66@msn.com: Well, I must say, that is probably the most incredible setlist and the most energy I've seen any band put out. The crowd was responding well to the band and Mike, Jeff and Ed all had HUGE energy. Ed was rolling around, tugging at the mike, jumping, screaming, posing, everything. Stone was his normal self, chuggin along. Jeff spun and hopped a lot like the old days. Mike was responding to the crowd and throwing picks out a lot. He looked like he was having fun with the people. The band just tore right through a bunch of rockers. The only complaint I have is the people throwing quarters at my back telling me to sit down and stop jumping. Right then, Ed said something like "get up!" and that shut them up. Right before one of the songs, someone threw a glowstick to the stage and Ed tried to catch it, he didn't have any luck. There were a lot of really great moments with the Riot Act songs. Green Disease fucking rocked the place even if most of the people didn't know the words. That was upsetting, I was one of the very few in my section singing along. Most people got off their asses and jumped around to Evenflow. Mike tore it up there. He also threw his guitar around, not quite smashing it, after Go. Ed's new Ukulele is truly the coolest thing I have ever seen. I wish mine looked like that! The only problem with the night was Ed forgetting lyrics. He usually caught on, but he mixed up a couple verses or sung the verse into a chorus sometimes. The band was topnotch though, even with Ed's flubs, it doesn't matter, he still rocked the place. All in all, it was a really great show. The Rocky Mountain News here gave it an A. That has to show something from our paper. Be prepared though, if your show even has half the energy as this one, you're in for such a treat. Have fun!!! |
