April 5, 2003 - Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre; San Antonio, Texas
Paul Hoffman (Poffman303@aol.com): I have to start this out by saying a big THANK YOU to the Ten Club! The seats were awesome. Last night was an experience I will never forget! I don't even know where to begin, the set list is up so I will just list some of the nights highlights. I have to start by mentioning the littlest PJ fan who was in front of me, little Dane was three years old and was rocking with his parents the whole night, they said he had grown up on PJ. He even had a personalized PJ shirt. Okay so the concert was high energy from beginning to end and the band seemed to be having a great time, this could be due to the fact that it was Mike's birthday, we all got to sing happy birthday twice and at one point Jeff smashed a cake in his face! Just looking at the set list you can see it would be any PJ fan's dream come true. The Improv at the end of Wishlist seemed to be an answer to the news coverage that came out of the Denver show. Eddie at one point was checking himself out on the big screen then said he was better than that guy (or something to that effect). Save You was amazing to hear live. Last Kiss and Crazy Mary are wonderful covers (Eddie seemed to fumble a bit at the beginning of Crazy Mary). The second encore was amazing, ending the show with I Am A Patriot, Alive, Yellow Ledbetter and Baba O'Riley... WOW!! This was my third Pearl Jam concert to attend and each concert just gets better and better. I'm going to put an end to my post concert ramblings. Thanks again to the Ten Club and of course to Pearl Jam for a wonderful night, can't wait until the next one!! Scott P. (hookemxii@aol.com):: What can I say? This was a great show!! The Ten Club got us great seats, (yet somehow a guy who had been in the club 6 months got better seats). Still, though we were in prime position in row F on the left side's center. I had reservations about missing the 'Horns game, who were playing Syracuse in the Final Four, but found a guy who snuck in a headset. I kept trying to get a feel for the how the game was going by reading his reactions, but eventually found out that we lost. Oh, well...I'm at my favorite band's show!! What am I doing worrying about basketball? The band came out to play "Of The Girl" still mostly in the dark and the crowd was going nuts. All night, the whole crowd was singing to every song at the top of their lungs (including me). Love Boat Captain sounded amazing. After "Cropduster," we all sang Happy Birthday to Mike, who I could see backstage before the show, staying in tip-top shape by playing some ping-pong. Immediately after singing to Mike, the band jumped into a great version of "Even Flow"....of course, always a classic. Near the beginning of the show, Ed looked up at the big screen and started gesturing to "apply makeup" and "check the lighting" to make sure he looked good. He said, "I'm better than that guy." "I Am Mine" and "Wishlist" followed, and Lukin surprisingly led into Grievance. Animal and Given To Fly were classic PJ. My favorite from the new record, "Save You" sounded fantastic as well. The guys ended the main set with "Spin The Black Circle" and walked off the stage. After a long intermission, and numerous chants/noise by the whole crowd, (who yes Denver "journalists"....STAYED THE WHOLE SHOW) the guys can back out. "Last Kiss" was perfect, and you have to love "Save It For Later" at the end of "Better Man." I wish they played that at the end every time. After "Crazy Mary" Ed did the punk rock version of "Happy Birthday" for Mike on his mini-strat-ukelele. At the end, they brought out cake and all the candles were blown out by the wind so Jeff PLASTERED IT IN MIKE'S FACE!! Haha!! I don't think Mike was that too happy, or maybe he was in shock, but he threw his shirt off in the crowd and threw a little cake too. After an improv, the guys did "Do The Evolution," which is ALWAYS great live. The band walked off again saying thanks. After a little shorter wait that the last break, the guys came back out and Ed and Matt did "I Am A Patriot" together. Ed had a quick word, and then....ALIVE!! I don't know if I have ever heard a crowd sing that loud. It was really amazing. Mike (a.k.a. the B-Day boy) WENT OFF at the end. The crowd went nuts!! The guys did a super version of "Yellow Ledbetter" and I said...."I guess this is the last song." After the song the guys hung around on stage and Ed grabbed two tambourines for what turns out to be BABA O'RILEY!! I have never been there for it live before, but WOW!! Ed broke both tambourines, and preceded to throw them into the crowd RIGHT WHERE I WAS SITTING....unfortunately on the other side of the theater. After a great finish, the guys said "Thanks, San Antonio" and left to a long standing ovation from the full capacity crowd. What a great night (despite my 'Horns losing), and a BIG THANKS to Pearl Jam, Sleater-Kinney, as well as the staff at the theater who were really nice to the people who got there extra early. |
