April 8, 2003 - UNO Lakefront Arena; New Orleans, Louisiana
Laura: Seeing PJ live is pure TORTURE.................when you know it's the only show on the tour that you'll see and all you have is 2 hours of bliss (or 2 1/2 hrs for N.O. :) ) and that it may be three years before seeing them again. How do I function between tours? It must be the bootlegs! Thanks 10C for taking such good care of us fans. Our seats couldn't be any better than they were in 2000, but front row is front row, so we are VERY grateful. Besides we were in the perfect spot to be handed Eddie's wine bottle when he decided to "pass it around." Needless to say, it was the best red wine ever! I don't know if it was the acoustics, or just the band themselves, but the sound was incredibly perfect. At least for my ears anyway. I won't go into detail about all the songs because they are all so amazing. A good setlist, I think. My special treat was Lukin. I've never heard it in person. Mike kicked the usual ass. What is that guy made of!! The politics of the night focused more on the 1st amendment than Bush. Since that episode in Denver, Eddie seems to have shifted more to the issue of freedom of speech. It's a shame that SOME people will bash the band for the rest of the tour over one night of someone letting their frustrations out in public. They played "Know Your Rights" and there was a line that says "you have the right to free speech, unless of course, you're actually dumb enough to try it." Isn't that the truth? Anyway, Eddie was in a very good mood. He joked about being in the same hotel as Dick Cheney the night before. He said he was wondering who was blasting AC/DC's Highway to Hell over and over. HA HA. During 1/2 Full, Eddie got a mirror and used it to reflect light onto the crowd around the arena. He spotted a girl wearing a shirt she made, the back of it said something about Cheney and Rumsfeld. I didn't catch it. On the front it said "BUSH FOR SALE." Eddie got a kick out of that. Then he found someone else who had a shirt that said "SHAVE YOUR BUSH IN 2004" In the area of forgotten lyrics....there were a fair amount of those moments. But sometimes it may have been me forgetting the words and blaming it on Eddie. As I'm typing this, I'm listening to the MP3 of the show that I got for ordering the bootleg. I'm listening to DTE and Eddie messed up the 1st and 2nd verses (more than I've ever heard on this song). So after the 2nd verse he jokes "I know this part" and breaks out into his famous DTE dance. Thanks guys for a wonderful and rocking show as usual. And thanks for bringing SK. That Carrie was something to watch. All you fortunate ones who get to see more than one show on the tour ...I'm very jealous...enjoy every minute of it.
Thanks again PJ and 10C, Hankbutton: I've seen the boys numerous times over the years, and I've got to say, this was the best so far. From start to finish, the guys poured it out to us ... literally when Ed passed his ever-present bottle of vino to us on the floor during the chorus of "Crazy Mary" ("...take the bottle, drink it down, pass it around..."). I think getting a sip of that wine was the crowning moment for me. Mike's solo on "Evenflow" blew me away, and "Porch" went on for about 10 minutes. And no P.J. show is complete without good cover songs, which we definitely got. Even Sleater-Kinney's set was graced with Pearl Jam gusto when Matt Cameron played tambourine for one of their songs. I was also pleased to see that Ed kept the politics to a minimum. All in all, it was brilliant. AC: First of all, this was the best concert I have ever experienced (and I have seen many)- the night was almost surreal. The energy that Pearl Jam had was highly contagious. I'm not going to go into the set list, since you have that, but a few highlights are to follow. Eddie was in a silly mood, and opened telling the crowd about a true story. He said that he hoped it's not a breach of security, but he found out that our Vice President was staying in the same hotel as he. That was pretty funny- I don't know, thinking about him and old Dick, hanging out in the bar, Drinking a beer- No, I doubt that happened. Anyway, Beginning the show with "Love Boat Captain" was perfect. "It's been sung before, but not said enough....All you need is Love..." Eddie did much of it acoustically, with a very gentle approach. The crowd was singing along, and I thought that this must have been similar to how many felt, years ago, when watching The Beatles sing the same words. Pearl Jam played so many songs, and I can tell you, that every single one of them Rocked. The venue was small, and they don't lie on their website when they say that every seat in the house is a good one. We happened to be directly in front of Eddie, on first balcony. Right behind the sound guys. And I could see the expressions on the band's faces. Awesome Venue. During the show, Eddie jumped up and came down to land on his backside (however, more like on the small of his back) and he just laid there, spread eagle, just as Jim Morrison did on one of his famous concerts. One of the Roadies came up to help him up, because it looked like such a hard fall, and Eddie just jumped up, like it was nothing. It was really cool when they had Sleater-Kinney come out with them, and sing CCR's "Fortunate Son," and Neil Young's "Rockin in a Free World." They looked like they were having so much fun, and since the venue turned all the lights on during the 2nd Encore, you could see every one in the audience jumping up and down having a blast as well. Their music - the band is so tight that it seems like you are listening to what has been produced in a recording studio, rather than live. They make it look so easy. I have loved Pearl Jam since day one. What I have loved most is their raw Lyrics- Very passionate and meaningful. Thanks Eddie, for making me feel somewhat normal, in a time when my views seem to be quite the minority.
