April 8, 2003 - UNO Lakefront Arena; New Orleans, Louisiana
Wendi aka 'vampyrekiss': "I got in line just after 3:30 and there were probably 50-60 people in front of me. When I got my tickets I could NOT believe my eyes. FRONT ROW. Seats 1 and 2 of left orchestra...which meant I was right in front of Jeff & Mike. This was my fifth Pearl Jam show and I finally got front row tickets. To say the least, I was completely ectatic. We got inside to our seats about 10 minutes into Sleater-Kinney's show. They were great. High energy, rocking and loud. I had never heard their music before but after seeing them tonight, I'm heading out to buy a CD or two of theirs tomorrow. When Pearl Jam took the stage, they opened with Love Boat Captain. Truly beautiful. Now, I can't remember every song Pearl Jam did or even in what order, but I do remember some of the songs played tonight: Grievence, Insignificance, Nothing As It Seems, Green Disease, Evenflow, Courdoroy, Wishlist, Lukin, DTE, Porch, Black, Thumbing My Way, Save You, 1/2 Full, Brain of J, Given To Fly, Spin The Black Circle, Elderly Woman, Daughter, Crazy Mary, and RITFW. The guys were on fire...especially Mike. His solos were absolutely breathtaking on Nothing As It Seems and Black. If I'm not mistaken, he had some relatives in the front row about 3 people away from me. Possibly his Mom and Grandmother? I'm talking a lady in her late 50s/early 60s and a lady in her 70s or so. He kept smiling at them and waving so I'm sure they were relatives of his. He was having a great night for sure. Jeff jumped around a bit but mainly stayed in his spot. Ed came out with his bottle of red wine and drank it down and another one before the first encore. I think it was during Crazy Mary when he probably had way too much and decided it would be neat to jump off his monitor backwards. Only he didn't land right, he landed on his back. The whole crowd held its breath to make sure he was ok. Even Jeff looked a bit concerned. He checked on Ed and Ed gave a big grin, got himself up and said something along the lines of 'I won't try that again', shrugging it off and laughing. Speaking of Crazy Mary...he did the pass the bottle thing again which was a nice touch :) I had brought a strand of Mardi Gras beads that I had made that contained these huge plastic basketballs on them and wrote Pearl Jam all over them with a "To: Jeff" on it. Mike saw me dangling them and asked if I wanted him to have them...I couldn't resist and said yes. After the song was over (I completely forgot the song, but it was the one before Elderly Woman), he looked at them and handed them immediately over to Jeff. Jeff loved them and gave me the biggest ass smile and a nice peace sign while saying thank you. They were then displayed accross his speakers real nice. After that, I kept getting smiles from both Jeff and Mike for the rest of the show :) Some other cool things about tonight - Ed pulled out this mirror and had the spotlight overhead shine down on him, reflecting the mirror and pointing it in different directionsto spotlight the crowd as he wished. He focused in on a couple of things. One was a sign that said something about Bush 2004. The other one was a girl wearing a t-shirt that said something about how Bush is for sale. Speaking of Bush...he made several 'free speech' comments tonight and even referenced New Orleans' very special visitor in town tonight, none other than our Vice President. He stalled after beginning to tell us who was in town and said it might be a breach of security, but then Stone said that 'he wasn't there' (meaning inside the arena) so Ed proceeded to tell us who he was referring to. Everyone boo'd the fact that the VP was in town. Anyways, New Orleans 2003 was easily THE BEST show I've ever been to and the set list was A+++++++!!!!! A HUGE ***THANK YOU*** to the Ten Club for the best seats in the house and a bigger Thank you to Pearl Jam for making this one of the most memorable nights of my life." Jimjum101: I think I lost some of my hearing. Song highlights were Brain of J, Lukin, Porch, Spin the Black Circle and the cover of Fortunate Son with Sleater Kinney. Sleater Kinney's lead singer's voice could slice through diamonds. The band was jumping around. Mike seemed a little rowdy from the beginning, and sure enough, when his Even Flow solo was about to come up, Eddie said, "It's all yours, Mike," and then Mike did the best solo I've ever heard or seen him do. His Black solo was also great later in the night, but a little slower. The spotlight was mostly on Mike. Ed did a great thing later into the set when playing a new song, he took out a mirror and cut up the spotlight onto the crowd. It was little things like that that can up the experience a little bit. Someone in the crowd had a sign that said, "Shave your Bush in 2004." Who's the guy on piano? He killed on Black. Eddie flubbed lyrics on Do the Evolution and Green Disease, but that's to be expected, I guess. The band did a "public service announcement" song where Eddie was singing about our rights, and at the end, he just did a back dive and landed flat on his back. Matt ended the song a couple of seconds later, but it was funny how nonchalant the band members were about him landing so hard. Jeff offered his hand, and that was that. There was no Go or Animal, but it was nice they did Insignificance and Grievance. Those songs seem really relevant right now. For some reason, Stone couldn't get RITFW started, and Eddie and the lead singer of SK were standing there laughing at him. that was funny. 1/2 full was the best new song they played. There's something about the end where it builds and there's a moment--Eddie's voice never sounded better tonight. The concert was awesome. Even the songs you can do without you end up singing along to. Jeff: This was my 4th Pearl Jam concert and as always, they never disapoint. I'm not going to bore anybody with the whole setlist. Good selection of songs, good seats (thanks ten club), good people to wait in line for tickets with (thanks for the beers from that couple playing uno next to us). I think the most memorable moment was during Crazy Mary when Ed gave us his wine, gracious. Thanks again Pearl Jam. Jeff |
