April 18, 2003 - AmSouth Amphitheatre; Nashville, Tennessee
Kyle Meredith (kyle AT doubtingtheobvious.com): Of all of the shows that I've been to over the years, this is definitely in my top 3 shows. The show started early with a beautiful version of Throw Your Arms Around Me (so glad I didn't go to the bathroom). Thought that would be all of Pearl Jam until after Sleater-Kinney, but Mr. Matt Cameron made a surprise appearance during their set... PLAYING THE FUCKING TAMBORINE!!!! Several of the guys was on the side of the stage laughing and cheering him on. (By the way: Sleater-Kinney = awesome!) Oceans was a great surprise; One I had hoped would show up, but never expected it. Also, the punk rock vibe that the band set up with Breakerfall/Gods Dice/Save You/Do the Evolution really got the crowd excited early. Light Years was dedicated to a friend that they had lost recently. Light Years isn't usually one of my favorites, but, WOW! The emotion that went into that song really blew me away. I think I blew something in my head when they went into Deep. HOLY SHIT! Even without a mosh pit, this song still gets people bumping into each other. I'm glad to see it's return (now if only for LEASH). Ed's comment before Even Flow was classic, and we all knew it was true. It was something about him "knowing the next song so well that I could smoke, drink, take a shit, and mow the lawn while playing it." Daughter was probably my favorite moment. Usually a song that I've tired of, this version breathed some new life into for me, but because of the last 30 seconds or so, the crowd took over and continued with the melody. Good times. Parting Ways was beautiful...Into Betterman, and, "holy shit! What's Ed singing for the tag? HOLY SHIT! He's singing Wild Thing!!!" Moving right along, Free Jazz was hilarious. Really didn't think I'd hear that attempted again. Know Your Rights was my second favorite part of the set. I freakin Love that song and Ed's voice was dead on. Anyway, it was a great seg. into Bushleaguer... mask and all. Afterwards was funny. There were a few in the crowd that started booing... which made everyone else cheer that much louder to overpower the booing. (Hey, we support you guys! Free speech for all!) Before Sonic Reducer they brought out the guitarist from the Dead Boys. I thought I was gonna shit my pants. There's a guy I never thought I'd ever see live. Amazing performance. Then the final encore. Leaving Here w/ Sleater-Kinney, which seemed perfect. Fortunate Son with the girls AND Steve Earle, and then a powerful RITFW. I'm still a little speechless. Can't wait till Lexington. Thanks Ten Club/Pearl Jam. |
