Todd O'Brien:

Amazing - My fourth PJ show and quite possibly the best. I saw them on the second night at Madison Square Garden in '99 (Stone's all-time favorite show) and thought I would never see a performance like that again. But last night was just magical. LBC is a great opener. Just like the other greats ("Release," "Oceans," "Long Road") the energy really builds. I was pleasantly surprised to see Boom really moving behind the keyboard. How awesome is that? He was absolutely great. When Ed introduced him to the crowd later in the set, he was greeted with a resounding BOOOOOMMM. But, I think my first indication that this would be a special night was when I heard the opening notes of "Present Tense." That's not a tune they play very often. It was flawless. And to close the first set with "State" and "Blood" was just awesome!

I could NOT believe they played Chloe Dancer. My girlfriend and I were just listening to their last performance of that song earlier in the day and talked about how great it would be to hear it. It sounded better than ever. I didn't even notice that Brendan O'Brien was on the keys. I wish I was paying more attention. Mike just ripped on "Black" and "Alive" and then Ed was joined on stage by his Bush-masked buddies. That was a treat. To see him elevated above their heads belting out "Porch" was classic (see pictures from show). I actually brought a disposable camera to the show and took all 12 pictures only to find out today that none of them came out. I guess I'll have to rely on my memory - which will be aided by my just-purchased bootleg. Thanks Ten Club and PJ for allowing us fans the opportunity to relive these shows and brag to our friends that we were there to witness it!

The band were just awesome. Stone was galloping all over the stage and flawless as ever. Jeff was definitely feeling the energy of the show jumping all over the stage. Boom was an awesome addition to an already kick-ass live band. As I mentioned earlier, Mike added new life to the older songs, often stretching them out to Grateful Dead-length solos. And of course, Ed was Ed. His voice sounded as good as ever, he was in good spirits, funny, sarcastic, and charismatic.

The lighting definitely played a bigger role at this show too. There were some lights behind the band that got white-hot and super bright when Ed was really screaming. And at one point (during Evenflow, I think) there was a sole spotlight shining onto Ed from above and behind him. He held a mirror or piece of glass overhead which formed a spotlight which she shined across the capacity crowd. He was like a beacon...

I began to think that this show was being filmed for a DVD or something. It was that good. I can't wait to hear it again. For those of you waiting for PJ to come to your town, you're in for a good time. In fact, hopefully I'll be joining you. I need to see "Bushleaguer" before this tour is over.

Peace,
Todd O'Brien

A truly amazing show...it was everything that a Pearl Jam concert should be, the setlist was well written, the band sounded great, Ed had a touch of free speech in him, it was amazing. The band tore through the first set with ease...especially Mike as he wailed away in his laid back kick ass attitude on each of his solos! The opening version of Love Boat Capt. was extremely well done and the set just kept rolling from there with highlights such as Small Town and Present Tense, the crowd singing the words to many songs in entirety. The first encore was just as awesome as the first set as they pulled out Crown of Thorns which is definitely a rare occasion and Black which the crowd really got into, Alive was excellent and Porch was well-done. The second encore was even more amazing then the first however as they pulled out Crazy Mary, Baba O'Riley (highlight of the evening), and Yellow Ledbetter to close out the evening! The entire night was full of energy and Ed seemed to feed off the fans (as he usually does when they get into the show as much as they did at this one) and sing his heart out. Jeff was all business...playing the strings off the bass, Matt was in his usual form, and the keyboards were filled by Boom who was incredible. Also Brendan O'Brien came out for Crown of Thorns to play keyboards so that was a treat, and Ed's political narratives were accurate as usual. Overall, the evening was a wondrous one and one that I'll remember as I'm sure most people there will...if you haven't seen a live Pearl Jam show....see one....they are an amazing live performance and remain a pillar in the halls of Rock and Roll!

~Ron
