Joey Stewart: I thought I knew what an awesome show was until tonight. This show is a perfect example of how great Pearl Jam is. First off I would like to thank everyone at the Ten Club for my great seats. (I was about 16 rows back but it still seemed like I was right up front.) The crowd was energized from the get go. I was expecting a slow opening song like Release or Sometimes but instead, Pearl Jam came bustin' out of the gates like a bunch of wild thoroughbred horses from KY and kicked ass with Cropduster. Everyone in the band was on fire and in a great mood it seemed. The crowd fed off the positive energy flowing from the band and the band fed off of the crowd and it showed. The show churned out some serious ass-bustin' songs and seemed relentless until Immortality came along. I had always wanted to hear that song live and finally got to. (and I certainly wasn't disappointed either!) I have to say though, the highlight of the first part was indeed Black. That song just oozes emotion and it really hit home for a lot of people I could tell. The first encore started off with I'm a Patriot. I had never heard that song before tonight and now it is one of my favorites. The band rolled along and rocked our socks off and then came Alive. I have never seen so much energy in one song ever. During the song, Mike went over to Stone and told him something, (not sure what it was) but all I know is that the end of that song was blazing hot. It was so intense that it was almost numbing. At the end of it Matt threw his drumsticks out into the crowd and one of them landed about 5 feet away from me. (didn't manage to get it though.) For the second encore, some lucky guy got his wish. He was holding up a huge neon green SMILE sign and the band roared through it like it was a piece of cake. Now as for Fuckin' Up, this was another song I had never heard or seen live and I was astonished by all the energy that was put into that song. Every band member was bouncing around and beyond "into it." Ed must've thrown about half a dozen tambourines into the crowd. And for the closer we got a healthy dose of Yellow Ledbetter. All I have to say about that song is Mike totally ripped it a new ass! This show has to be at the top 10 of all time great shows. The band was in such a good mood, the crowd was ecstatic to see them, and they played off each other all night long. I don't think there was a disappointed soul in the house tonight....especially me. Thank you Pearl Jam and all those at the Ten Club for making this possible. Joey Stewart Joe Lamont:
This was the 3rd time I have seen Pearl Jam ('93, and 2000) - and this was the
best show, by far! I've been to over 200 concerts - ranging from Dave
Matthews to Phish to the Grateful Dead (and many more) - and this show is my
top Three - all time! The sound in Rupp Arena was spectacular - and super
LOUD! I saw the 2000 tour outdoor at Riverbend in Cincinnati and it wasn't
nearly as good - I think that can be attributed to the lack of volume that
night - I knew Rupp was a good venue and I was right - The band was TIGHT -
ripping through songs and enjoying every moment - they seemed more
"involved" than they were in 2000 - Two surprises for me - "Can't Keep" and
"Save You" from the new album were both amazing. No "Love Boat Captain" or
"I am Mine" - my favorites of the new album, but the show was so good, I
didn't even notice until afterwards! The whole show was absolutely sick,
but here are some highlights - Better man and Alive back to back to end the
first encore was spectacular. "Immortality" - holy shit, that song is
awesome! And to rip off "Given to Fly" second song out really got the crowd
going! Great crowd by the way, about halfway through Ed stopped and gave
the crowd a hand for being so vocal, and he said something to the effect of,
" Tomorrow night's show is canceled - Fuck it - we're staying here!" and
then, "What do they have to drink in St. Louis anyway? A bunch of piss?"
An obvious rip on Anheuser - Busch. I'm not going to go through every song,
but I can say they were ALL GOOD. Bryan C. Combs (bryn_cmbs AT yahoo.com): First of all I would like to thank the Ten Club for the great seats :) Now, on to the show. What can I say? The band blew the roof off of Rupp Arena. The crowd was amazing. I was very surprised to hear the Cropduster as the opener, but it worked. Given to Fly and Corduroy where next, and the crowd was loving it. Last Exit was great. It was wonderful to hear Blood and Breath live, as well as Glorified G. Patriot would have been the highlight of the show for me, however, a certain song in the encore beat it out... My fiancé and I are going to 2 shows this tour, this one and Pittsburgh. Way back in February when we ordered our tickets we picked one song each that we wanted to hear more than any others. I chose Smile (my favorite song of all time!), and she chose SOLAT. Needless to say, when Jeff strapped on the guitar I almost fated, I knew what was coming! Then Ed took the harmonica and...WOW! A dream come true. Great, rocking set list. Here's hoping they play SOLAT in Pitt this weekend...
