April 23, 2003, in Champaign, IL was my first show this tour. I've seen PJ only once before 3 years ago at the Chicago show. A buddy and I drove down from Vernon Hills/Libertyville, IL in the morning and arrived in Champaign around noon-thirty. we checked into our hotel and waited in the ten club line for a few hours. our tickets were pretty good, considering my lousy member # (284***) so anyway, Sparta was excellent, I'm not into that kind of music really but I can respect a talented band. the singer looked really young and sounded a lot like Perry Ferrell, though the band is nothing like Jane's addiction. there was this one guitarist who wouldn't really do anything for periods of time, kind of weird.

Ok so PJ comes on soon after and they break into DTE. Deep was awesome, I was glad to hear Dissident. At some point Ed says he feels like a lion trapped in a cage, adding "are there any christians out there who want to get eaten?" Eddie dedicates Small Town to people from Gurnee, and I thought, "hey, I've been to Gurnee many times before" so I felt honored. Even Flow and Jeremy got the crowd going. Personally I felt that the crowd wasn't into it as much as they could have been, I mean if I was a lucky bastard in the front row, I'd go nuts. The crowd wasn't as animated is what I mean. Then comes my personal highlight, You Are. Incredible lighting and an amazing song live. Habit was a nice touch, but I was a bit disappointed that Ed didn't say anything during the "speaking as a child of the nineties" oh well. Untitled is one of the most beautiful songs I've heard, so simple and spontaneous, I love it. Blood and Porch were both a great way to close the first set. Eddie taunted us during Porch by grabbing cable from the side of the stage and looking up to the lighting rig. Well, he didn't climb it but compromised with a leap off of some monitors back onto stage. The crowd got into this one with a call and response coming out of the chorus.

The first encore started with driven to tears which was a good touch. After Better Man came Crazy Mary, another highlight. In the quiet beginning of it, Matt was making shadow puppets with the light projecting on the opposite wall of the assembly hall. Boom completely makes this song. One of my favorite ones live. Know Your Rights was incredible, Ed got so into it, completely insane. The first encore concluded with fortunate son. Ed came back out and talked about ripping soon forget off of Pete's Blue Red Grey, which he preceded to play. I disagree, both songs are great in different ways. then came black and alive. the solo to alive was great, cant wait to hear it on the boot, the crowd was chanting throughout it. finally the lights came on and they played baba, afterwards, Mike switched to his strat as if to play another song, but Ed was already on his way out, the other guys followed him after some confusion. All in all a great show, I'm hoping to hear the songs I didn't this time at Chicago or Alpine Valley. See you all there!
