April 25, 2003 - Gund Arena; Cleveland, Ohio
Johny K: Wow, that is all I can say. I just got back from the Cleveland Show and it was amazing. At first I wasn't sure how it was going to be since I have never seen PJ inside but it was incredible. It seemed as though the guys just didn't want to leave. For starters we had Can't Keep which has shown to be a great opener. Then the classic corduroy really got the crowd movin and PJ got into there groove playing a lot of fast songs. Not a whole lot from Riot Act tonight which was surprising. Big sing along all night especially with Small Town. Ed announced that they were kinda making up the set as they went along tonight, and you could tell. After songs he would be running around talking to the guys about what to play next. Ed said that they were going to play a song that they stopped playing for a while and havent played much lately and went right into Present Tense!! This was actually the second time I'd seen the song live and man, it was incredible so much emotion from Ed. Next was Jeremy and again the crowd erupts and sings. Ed and his acoustic for thumbing my way. Then another fast one SPTBC! Crowd was really hoppin. Next was Alive!! At the end the crowd kept singing when Ed trailed off and extra extended solo by McCready, one of the many of the night. You Are was everything that the previous fanviews said it was, and was the last Riot Act song of the night for a total of 6. Daughter was full of energy and ended with Ed singing the People Have the Power, and the crowd singing it back at him. He then showed the peace sign and said no matter what happens that was the ultimate goal. And still holding up the peace sign Ed said, "lets get one thing straight, this is not a fuck you to our troops, one finger makes a lot of difference" :) Good stuff....Then SOLAT and Black...at the end of Black the entire arena sang the do da do do do de dooo part and another extra long solo by McCready that was amazing. Then the 2nd encore, the most incredible song of the night and best version I have ever heard Ed and Matt played I am A Patriot. So good, really was an amazing version of the song that I've never heard before. The whole second encore was amazing, Driven to Tears, then Better Man, Ed was breaking strings all night long. And I wasn't sure if they were going to play it, but then Crazy Mary and Boom really shined for a good 3 minute solo on his Hammond B3...wow..he was really rockin out all night long, and then McCready took it for a spin with a sweet solo. They ended the night with Sonic Reducer since it is a Dead Boys song and the Dead Boys hail from good ol Cleveland. So good, then Rockin In the Free World as a closer...McCready was running all around the stage and Ed kept smashing tambourines and throwing them into the crowd. Near the end Ed was walking all around the stage and he actually fell off. But after he collected himself he hopped back up to the stage to a cheer from the crowd and kept rockin. It seemed like they were going to play another song after maybe Yellow Ledbetter, as Stone went and grabbed his acoustic after Free World but then Ed said Goodnight and the guys headed out. I don't think that we could have asked for anything better tonight. This will most likely be the best concert I ever see by any band, but I am seeing the guys next in Cinci so we'll see. I have faith. Thanks to the 10C for great tix, and thanks to Pearl Jam for a night I and everyone else in the Gund will ever forget.
~Johny K~ Greg Peterca: To attempt to summarize the events of tonight with words seems rather futile and impossible right now. I can't stop thinking about what I just witnessed. My forth time seeing PJ proved to be the best yet. The show lived up to, and grew beyond what anyone there could have expected. The anxious crowd was greeted with the opening song off Riot Act, Can't Keep. Turns out the crowd couldn't keep tabs on how many songs were played tonight. From there the band cruised from album to album rocking the usually boring Gund Arena to an uproar. The band left everything they had out on the stage, from Love boat Captain to Alive, the first set left every soul in the arena content. As if the first act wasn't enough, the first encore was mind blowing. You Are sent me to another planet. I've heard Black before live many times, but Boom brings something to the song, it was emotional and intense. Though I would have gladly stayed all night, I could have left after Black feeling like the luckiest music lover alive, proving to be even more lucky than I thought was possible, the next encore turned out to be incredible! I Am a Patriot followed by the rare, Driven to Tears (police), threw in a twist to the amazing set list, Eddie commented during the show that they were "making some up as they went along." Crazy Mary was the stand out track of the night. Boom went off on sick organ solo, followed by another McCready tear the song had every one stunned with it's power and add lib additions. The show was concluded with Rocking in the Free World. The band totally rocked out during the song. A hush of silence fell over us when Eddie took a a fall off the stage while chucking a tambourine into the crowd, but a roar of cheers welcomed him back to the stage to finish the show. Eddie articulated the theme of the night during the Daughter jam when he called for peace and told us that "The people have the power." He also clarified that the two fingered peace sign is not a "Fuck you to the Troops," adding that "one fingering makes a big difference." Once again PJ delivered and lived up to their name as the best live band around. I speak for every one who was their tonight and for every one who has been at any of these shows when I say that I would really like to the thank the band for what they have given us as fans. To try to put words to how much I feel I owe the band is a waste of time, I know all of you can relate. The albums seem be enough to get me buy but seeing them live is so rewarding and indescribable. It's pretty hard to come home half drunk and write about such an amazing experience. Ten club you rule, the seats were great. PJ I'll see you in Cinnci you're the best.
