Daniel Y: Well, what can I say -- another great Pearl Jam show in the bag. Before Idlewild came on, Eddie did "Throw Your Arms Around Me" and he sounded GREAT. When Pearl Jam hit the stage, the crowd was ready to go. I was expecting "Go" or something else a bit heavier as an opener but "Long Road" was just the right introduction to what would be a good show. They ripped through "Evolution" and some of the new songs -- all of which sounded better live than on the album. The section where I was seated seemed bored and they only stood up for the "Even Flow" choruses. But I enjoyed every moment. I was absolutely surprised when they played "Present Tense" because 1) they hardly ever play it... and... 2) it's in my Pearl Jam top 5 songs. Mike of course wailed on 1/2 Full and his energy was great throughout the show. Surprisingly, Stone was really into every song too. He doesn't seem too enthusiastic often (Shoreline 10.31.00, TB2K, Showbow, Orlando HOB) but he was awesome tonight. Stone is inspiring to listen to though and he is one of my idols. For the first encore, Ed came out saying that he thought the crowd was a bit tough (and I agree) but that maybe it was just him. But the songs that followed lit up the crowd -- LBC, Small Town, Better Man, Crazy Mary (BOOOOOOOOM!!!), Alive, and Porch. All of which left me totally out of breath. I thought for the second encore, we were gonna hear the common closers, Yellow Ledbetter, Last Kiss, etc. But THEY PLAYED BUSHLEAGER. Ed justified it by saying that since he was in the Bay Area, the bastion of protests, the weapon of mass construction. Overall, it was a great show. I wish I had better seats because I was in the third to last row, just an arms distance from the lawn area. I really couldn't see anything for the two and half hours or so but just listening to Pearl Jam's amazing music made it all okay. Sorry to PJ if the crowd wasn't too into it. But your true fans were all there for you tonight and I hope you guys felt it as much as I did. See you at the Bridge School Benefit in October. LONG LIVE PEARL JAM!!!
--Daniel Y., 20 Matt: Well, show number 2 of my summer journey, and the show rocked. Started off with an Ed pre-set of TYAAM. First time I had ever seen an Ed pre-set. Maybe 1/3 of the crowd was there for it. Very powerful. Other highlights were the extended jam on 1/2 Full and the furious version of Go, complete with a behind the head Mike solo. Porch had Ed and Mike climbing the stairs on each side of the stage, and finished with Ed on the barricade in front of the crowd. Crazy Mary was very extended. During his solo, Mike ran over to Boom to jam. They had dueling solos, taking turns every 4 bars, each trying to mimic what the other had just played. Very intense. Very cool to hear Bu$hleager again, although no mask was featured. Fuckin Up powerfully closed the set.
Overall, it was a kick ass show. Not quite up to Missoula standards, but great nonetheless. Now its on to LA. See ya'll there! |
