June 2, 2003 - Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre; Irvine, California
theslick1 AT yahoo.com: This was the first time I had ever seen Pearl Jam. The June 3 show will be my second time. The shows started slow somewhat of an odd opener, "Of the Girl," which I had always regarded as a minor song, but the crowd got into it, everyone on their feet. Things picked up quickly with "Last Exit," and a blistering version of "Save You," (a song that McCready really gets into), and "Corduroy." The pace slowed a bit for "Love Boat Captain" and "Given to Fly," before the band slid into "Even Flow." Eddie added some words to the song -- something about the FCC's decision to further deregulate the media, which just happened today -- but I couldn't quite make out what it was. "Gimme Some Truth" followed (I wasn't familiar with that one), then "I Am Mine." They played "Jeremy" next, which I understand is not always part of the show, even though it is one of their biggest "hits." The pace slowed again with "Wishlist" and "Immortality" but picked up again with "Whipping" (one of the best songs of the night, in my opinion) and "Deep" (which I think is another one they don't do that often). Two ballads followed, "Thumbing My Way" and "Black" and the set closed with an extended version of "Rearviewmirror." The first encore featured "You Are" and "Daughter" and two scorchers, "Alive" (it seemed like half the crowd knew every word) and "Blood." The second encore started with Eddie telling the crowd they were going to keep playing even though there was a "hefty fine" for playing past the arena's curfew. We got "I Am a Patriot" with just Eddie and Matt followed by "Down," a great version of "Crazy Mary" that featured the keyboard player going crazy, the Who's "Baba O'Riley" and "Yellow Ledbetter." The show ran about 2-1/2 hours or so. It seemed like the crowd was really into it, as almost all 16 thousand people were on their feet the whole time and on several songs, you could hear a large portion of the audience singing along. Eddie talked about being in the audience at this venue years ago (pre-P.J.) and watching drummer Matt Cameron performing with Soundgarden. All in all, a great show, very energetic and a crowd pleaser. (Hope they play "Bushleager" and "Insignificance" tonight though.) Edward Starr: Last night show was literally one of the strongest Pearl Jam performances in recent memory. Hitting the stage at about 9:20, the band began with an off beat opener, Of the Girl. Instantly after that song, the energy level at the SOLD OUT Amphitheater was off the charts. The band tore through the next five songs at a blistering pace. Throughout the night, it was evident that the band were in fantastic spirits. Each member was running around, animated, and jumping throughout the night. I would say that they had over 100 people on both sides of the stage watching them. Friends, and family were all over the place, and the band put together a show that they would not forget. Playing up to the magnificent crowd, Eddie let the audience sing the majority of the chorus' for Jeremy, Black, and Alive. It is truly a very RARE night when you get - JEREMY, EVEN FLOW, BLACK, and ALIVE in the same evening. The audience also got to hear..IMMORTALITY, RVM, and CRAZY MARY. Crazy Mary alone was over 10 minutes long with Boom challenging Mike to a solo contest. Ed was in a very good mood for most of the evening, make a reference that this is a place that he remembers very fondly. The evening did not have a heavy presence as some of the recent past PJ concerts, and had practically no political undertones at all----the music did all of the talking. BABA absolutely brought the house down with the entire house lights on. Everyone in the audience was jumping up and down and the applause at the end of the song was thunderous. Even Matt thought that they were done, but Mike went and got his guitar and began playing YELLOW LEDBETTER---Matt had to run back from the side of the stage and hop on drums. The concert finished with emotional applause, and a completely worn out band. The show was over 2.5 hours...and Eddie joked numerous times that they went past curfew and will have to pay numerous fines. Just one more example of why this band is a testament to touring bands today and hands down the best rock and roll band in America right now. |
