Dan Kunka: Wow, what an impressive show for one that I wasn't that excited for -- first night in a venue and a typical L.A. crowd had me worried that the show might be good, but not great. I couldn't have been more wrong -- the boys delivered a solid set and where very pumped for the show. Better yet, the crowd was in to it from the beginning, adding to the whole atmosphere of the show...very pleasing from start to finish... Started off strong with a beautiful Of the Girl and then got the short rockers to get the crowd going -- Given To Fly was strong as usual and Gimme Some Truth an early surprise. Wishlist was very extended with a pretty outro -- it's weird how songs from Yield and Binaural now give you that "Wow, it's an oldie!" feel. Immortality was fantastic and with Whipping we already had 4 from Vitalogy (alas no Satan's Bed -- you would think Ed would've tried to learn the lyrics after St. College's "experiment"). Deep was another nice surprise and Black and RVM capped off a great set. The encores don't look like much on paper but they were amazing live -- good energy, Stone doing crazy crazy dances and hops, and the crowd playing along nicely -- the new version of I Am a Patriot had the crowd in awe and the dueling-solos of Crazy Mary was just as fun and infectious as SF. Ed told us that they were playing over curfew and it would cost them $5000 to keep playing and it seemed like they were trying to get their money's worth -- the lights are on for Baba, the crowd going nuts, and when the song ends we think that's it (and so, apparently, does Matt, who's clear off the stage and already in the back when he has to run back out to his drums when he hears YL start up). YL is a love-feast and the Mike's on fire and then it's over. A great show -- definitely better than 2000 at the Greek and just a fun evening of music. Hopefully more tonight... Mag76er: Wow, what a night!! The boys put on a vintage performance last night at the Verizon Amphitheatre in Irvine. After a three hour wait in the Ten Club line, we got dead center 30 rows back (not bad for someone who joined in 99)..Anyway the setlist had many highlights. Of the Girl, a rare opener, started it off and did not disappoint. They followed with a solid versions of Last Exit, Save You, Corduroy, LBC, Given2Fly and Even Flow.. Then we got a taste of a nice rarity. Gimme Some Truth, but not the usual acoustic version.. It was a louder and different take on the song...very electric...I am Mine was flawless as always, then Jeremy which amazingly has become a rarity in its own right...Then Wishlist, IMMORTALITY, Whipping, DEEP, Thumbing My Way, Black and an extended version of RVM to close the set..They opened the encore with You Are, which is one of the most unique songs in the PJ arsenal.. Daughter with a tag that sounded like an Ice-T song, but I might be wrong.. Alive and Blood closed the encore...Patriot opened the 2nd encore and was also played with the electric guitar, very different version than I had ever heard, really incredible..Down is unreal live, great versions of Crazy Mary, Baba and Ledbetter to close the show..They played til Midnight..Ed told the crowd that they were going past curfew and didn't care about the fines they would get..after Down he said, "that cost us 2 grand" ..proving once again that they are the ultimate fans band--actually kinda glad they didn't play Betterman, Small Town and Evolution--those songs are guaranteed in the setlist 90% of the time so its actually nice not to hear them...the show was highlighted by several extended jams, overall the show was a 10 out of 10...Like a fine wine PJ gets better over time Rob: Another outstanding show and the first for my girlfriend. We arrived a little after 6 and were let in by 6:30. When we went to sit down we found out that a mistake had happened with our ten club tickets. Club tickets just are handed out in a stack going across a row, what we didn't realize is that our two tickets were in sections 101 and 103 completely across from each other. So we were told to talk to one guy who sent us to another who put us in the last row of the orch. section while he tried to get us better seats, AND THAT HE DID!!!! During Black he came back to us and took us to the PIT!!! where we got to enjoy the rest of the show. OK enough about that and now to the music. A great live opener with Of the girl, much better song live than on the album, and the crowd was into the night from the first song on. The two biggest highlights for me were immortality and DEEP, both stellar versions. Immortality seemed to be added in as the lights came down for whipping but went back up and they played immortality. We got 5 songs off of ten which was great because I had never heard alive, black or deep live before. It was great to hear 4 songs plus the b-side Down from riot act. For anyone who hasn't heard You Are live, it kicks ass. We got an Eddie/Matt only version of I am a patriot which was cool, but not sure many people knew the song. Also the band seemed to be having so much fun and joking around with each other during each extended jam, the crowd especially enjoyed the "bowwowyippieyoyippieyeah" tag to Daughter. Mike was singing along and running in circles during songs while he wasn't playing and of course the Alive solo behind his head. Very good setlist for me as there were many songs I had never heard live before. Almost no Ledbetter at the end, but Mike didn't seem like he would leave without playing it, Matt on the other hand was long gone and came running back just in time to join Eddie/Mike just after the intro. What else can I say, great show from the best live band I know. Rob |
