Rory Lovett: Tuesday night's show was absolutely rocking. From the opening number to the final tune, Pearl Jam satisfied every rock n' roll jones in the house. Highlights from the show were, "Black," "Evenflow," "Love Boat Captain" and "Crazy Mary." The true highlight of this gig was the grand finale with former PJ drummer Jack Irons sitting in on drums on "Rockin in the Free World." Irons has not missed a beat since leaving PJ and banged the heck out of Matt Cameron's kit. This also afforded Cameron the opportunity to pick up Vedder's SG and bang out a few chords on the Neil Young anthem. All in all, this was an amazing show, a perfect dynamic representation of what PJ is all about; well crafted rock songs played by great musicians. Whether the songs are loud and rocking or subtle and beautiful, the impact was equally powerful. I was on the fence about going to San Diego but now I am as good as there. Donut: Pearl Jam read us the riot act tonight. To a mostly unappreciative crowd, but PJ spread the word via a live radio broadcast by 94.9, an independent San Diego radio station. The theme of this night's riot act reading was the controversy over the FCC allowing the same conglomerate(s) to buy as many media outlets as they can, and want to. Nowhere is the result of allowing this to continue and proceed demonstrated so well as in San Diego. Clear Channel, at last count, owns 14 radio stations here. The best that can be said for San Diego radio is bland, repetitive, non diverse; bland, repetitive, non diverse, snore. Ok, to the show! The band gave it their all and, let it be known, that scattered throughout the venue we were there for you and loving every second of what you gave. Anyone reading this just needs to look at the setlist to know the fantastic show put on. It was my 3rd show in a row or my first 3 rows of the Riot Act Tour. Anyway, that is what I call it. Tonight's highlights of the highlight (the whole show) were all from Riot Act, always Black, always Porch; I Am a Patriot, with its beautiful, intense arrangement, performed by just Ed and Matt is something extra special. I am sure you have heard of or witnessed the Mikey/Boom, Crazy Mary superjam. I have no words to describe it, even after 3 nights in a row. Happy, joyous, unbelievable is all I can come up with and it is not an adequate description by any means. Bu$hleaguer, without mask. The music, lyrics say it all anyway. Boom and Mike add a special menacing touch to it. Mike ended it with one of his unique guitar solos. The riot act was read in full force and with intensity throughout the second encore: Know Your Rights, Bu$hleaguer, Fortunate Son, Rockin in the Free World. Special nonmusical moments-Ed thanking Stone and Jeff for sticking together and being the foundation to keep this band alive. Stone and Jeff hugged and drank from the wine. And, are you ready, biggest surprise of the night, Matt straps on a guitar and Jack Irons comes out to play drums for Fortunate Son. Thank you Stone, Jeff, Ed, Mike, Jack, Matt and Boom for this moment in Pearl Jam history.
Respectfully, gratefully, humbly yours, |
