June 6, 2003 - MGM Grand; Las Vegas, Nevada
johnmstapp AT yahoo DOT com: Living in Utah I knew I wouldn't be able to attend as many shows as many Ten Club members. The closest shows were 500 miles away in Missoula and Las Vegas. But I got to attend both and am proud to say that I got to take my wife and all four of my sons to a show. Jared (age 13) got to go with me to Missoula. Chris (13), Michael (15), Matthew (nine), Jolynne and I made the long drive down Friday morning to Las Vegas. The show was wonderful. They play better every time I see them, they have the largest repertoire of any group I've ever heard, and they care about their fans more than any group I've ever seen. They were totally on all night. I'm amazed when they play "Even Flow." It was the fourth or fifth song and they play it practically every night, but it's fresh, new and overpowering every time. Mike's solo is always different and it blew me away on Friday. "Spin the Black Circle" was great and I practically danced myself into a frenzy. About half way through the show Eddie played a guitar solo. I think it was on "Wishlist." It reminded me of why Pearl Jam is my favorite band. Lots of bands can rock, but Pearl Jam is a bunch of people, good people, who keep trying to make the most out of life, and teach the rest of us in the process. As long as you have Mike and Stone, Eddie doesn't really need to play guitar at all. But, you're either getting better or dying and Eddie isn't dying. He made me want to learn to play the guitar or do something new. At the end of the solo, he threw his arms up. I was sad that hardly anyone cheered. They didn't seem to get it. I cheered like crazy, not that he was better than Mike, but that he pushed himself and was willing to stand in front of thousands of people and do something he doesn't usually do. I was super happy they played "Present Tense." I hope my kids thought about the lyrics to that one. The shared energy at PJ concerts is so great. At most concerts fans will sing along with one or two hits. One of the highlights in Las Vegas was watching everyone go crazy and sing along with "State of Love and Trust," even though it is from a movie soundtrack and has never even been on a PJ album. A highlight was when Eddie came out alone and played "Hide Your Love Away." It gave me goose bumps. I went crazy when they played "Rockin' in the Free World." That's one of the best rockers of all time. They were totally on. Mike was going crazy. I was so excited when Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart came and joined them on that one. Mike played a riff from Barracuda in their honor. Nancy totally rocked out on the guitar. I saw Heart twice when I was a teenager, so I was super psyched to see them with Pearl Jam. I was dancing, jumping up and down and singing along every word with them. I think Chris thought his Dad had gone crazy, but it's good for him to see his Dad having fun. As great as the music was, the reason Pearl Jam is the world's greatest band is that it's so much more than five guys playing. They truly respect their audience. At one point Eddie came out with a mirror and used it to shine a light on everyone in the audience. It's like he wanted everyone to know they were in the spotlight, too. He started by shining on the people in the very back of the arena and moved the light onto everyone. The other reason everyone needs to go to a Pearl Jam concert is to meet the greatest fans in the world. In Las Vegas there were many fan highlights. I saw a woman singing along with every word of the Idlewild set. She told me she loves them and works for a record company that's putting together a special Idlewild EP. She told me how to get it on the web and then said, "Oh, just give me your address and I'll send you one." There were two great guys from Boston behind us who told us about how they're going to 18 shows and they told us how cool it was to hear Arc the night before. There was a guy who was nice to Matthew and kept telling him how lucky he was to see Pearl Jam when he was nine. The highlight was the man we talked to on the way out. After talking to us for a minute, he asked Chris, "Do you have any Pearl Jam posters? You need one." Then he handed Chris a limited edition New Orleans poster. That made Chris' night. I don't know his name, but thank you to the man from Illinois who was wearing a Supersonics shirt. Pearl Jam fans are the best. We drove over a thousand miles round trip to go to the show, but it was well worth it. Thanks to Pearl Jam for holding down their ticket prices. Since I could afford it, I had the wonderful experience of taking all four of my sons to see PJ. John Stapp K Walker: WOW what a night. They came out rockin and didn't stop! They start with "GO," "Save You," "Spin the Black Circle," "Last Exit," and then "Even Flow" the crowd went crazy! Eddie seemed to be in a fun loving mood. And Mike was going off on the solos. The version of "Crazy Mary" was truly one of the best I have ever heard. Boom was playing the organ like a madman. And Mike came over and played guitar next to him. It was great! They played a lot of older songs like "State of Love and Trust" and "Breath" which I think everyone enjoyed. The final encore was really fun as Eddie came out on his own and Played "Hide Your Love Away" he even played a little harmonica! "Crazy Mary," "Know Your Rights," " Fuckin Up" and then "Rockin in the Free World" ! And who comes out to play the last song with them? Ann and Nancy Wilson from Heart! They were rockin with the boys and Eddie was running all over the stage playing Tambourine until he finally tripped and fell. Too much wine! Very fun ending to a very fun concert! My only regret was I didn't get to hear Yellow Ledbedder. But they played it at the Missoula show I was at so its okay. Great show guys THANKS! K Walker |
