June 6, 2003 - MGM Grand; Las Vegas, Nevada
Ron Hudy: WOW! WOW! WOW! What else can I say? My fifth Pearl Jam show, and the best show I have ever attended! First off, thanks Ten Club for the tickets. Although I was one level up from the floor, about half way back on Mike's side, it was still a pretty good view and the sound was great. I will say one thing - the amount of fan club members at this show was incredible! Way more members at this show than at the anniversary show here in 2000. I imagine the new ticket policy (of two tix for as many shows on the tour as you like) had something to do with that. I waited in line 2-1/2 hours just to will-call my tickets and I was there an hour before they started handing them out. The process and organization (or lack thereof) of the MGM was the only negative aspect of the evening. Anyway, on to the show. As soon as they took the stage, they rocked right into "Go," and from there on out, plowed right through the first seven tunes, all the rockers, with barely any down time. Didn't slow down a bit until "Betterman," which Ed again let the crowd sing the first verse. Particularly nice out of the first few tunes was Mike's "Evenflow" solo work (does he ever NOT rip on this song?), and "I Believe in Miracles," which was a nice surprise. I didn't expect to hear a cover, especially that one, so early in the set. There was also the "Hey-Ho! Let's Go!" chant tagged on to "Daughter" (obviously in remembrance of Dee Dee Ramone who passed away June 5 last year). "You Are" was just SO awesome. A totally unique addition to their live show. The lighting and vibe on this tune shows how this band continues to make every tour a new experience. "Wishlist" was flawless (no lyric flubs!), with an extended jam at the end in place of the lyrical tag. "Present Tense" was nice to hear, with "Porch" closing out the first set. The band comes back out for the first encore, and Ed, obviously so content with himself with his stellar job on "Wishlist," TOTALLY flubs "Last Kiss"! I think he got about 5 words right out of the first two verses! At the end, just before the "Oooh-Oh-Oh-Oh-Ooh," he says "I remember this part," drawing some laughs. We are treated to "Down," one of my favorite B-sides ever, followed up with "Breath"!!! and "Do the Evolution," closing out the first encore. Second encore, Ed comes out solo for "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away"and tells us how he's going to use his tax break to fund anything that will get Bush out of office. "Crazy Mary" is next, with Matt standing aside Boom, totally rockin' off each other. Matt starts the "Fuckin' Up" groove, but stops, as they decide to play "Know Your Rights" first. Then comes "Fuckin'Up," which I thought would be the closer. That's when I notice a woman coming on stage with a guitar, and Mike starts playing the riff to "Barracuda," and I'm like "NO WAY"! Turns out Nancy and Ann Wilson from Heart join them onstage, not for "Barracuda," but "Rockin' In the Free World." Awesome closer (although I wish they had done "Barracuda"!) Overall, the best PJ show I have ever seen. I heard everything I was hoping to, and then some. Anyone who says these guys are slowin' down or don't have it anymore is nuts. They sound better than ever and I can't wait to see what the future brings for them. Thanks Pearl Jam, Ten Club, and all who made this a night to remember...
Ron Hudy Rob M: I've lived in Seattle for 22 years and have taken a liking to all bands from "my" home town. And the Seattle shows are great, but I was in awe of the respect and enthusiasm the fans in Las Vegas displayed toward the band. It was a great experience. The band was great as always. Love Boat Captain just kicks ass. The jam with Boom at the end of Crazy Mary was phenomenal. I really like the addition of his talents to the music. The highlight of the show had to be, well, there were two: When Ed tried to sing Last Kiss, he forgot the words. It didn't matter though, because the audience sang it for him. When he tried again and failed, he just let the crowd finish all but the ending. It was the best. He was drunk, and when it was over, he replied to the crowd how he felt "like such a winner" before that. Second highlight was when Ann and Nancy Wilson came onstage and joined in on Free World. Oh yeah, and the band even played some Clash. The night was perfect. Hey, Las Vegas, you guys impressed the shit out of me. Pearl Jam, you haven't stopped. Thank you.
