June 9, 2003 - Smirnoff Music Centre; Dallas, Texas
Brian Howarth: This was a long day for me but, well worth it. My day started like every other Monday. I had to go to work, unfortunately. But, there was optimism in the air. I knew I was working a half day driving from Tulsa, Ok to Dallas for the show. About a four hour drive. I got the arena around 6:00 PM and met my friends. The fun began. I was ready to see my fourth Pearl Jam show and second concert of the year. Our Ten Club seats were the best money could buy, twenty-two rows from the stage, dead center in the middle. The show opened with Alive. WOW. What an opening song. The next song was the song I had predicted them to open up with, Brain of J, a song that should be sung every time PJ plays in Dallas. The first five songs were nothing short of spectacular, all rocking songs, all played very intensely. The band slowed down a bit with Daughter and Nothingman and then picked right back up with rocking songs like Jeremy, Blood, Dissident, etc. The band played well together all night long. Unfortunately, the band has to stop playing at 11:00 PM in Dallas. The band finished strong with hits like State of Love and Trust, Black, and RVM. The solos on Black and RVM were phenomenal. Crazy Mary was the best version I have ever heard of that song. Boom and Mike's jam fest was incredible. I must say, this was the best, most intense, most upbeat, PJ show I have ever seen. This will be a bootleg I will buy immediately. After seeing the band in OKC in April, I was expecting to be rocked and have a good time but I left shaking my head in awe of the talent, stage presence, and classic rock n roll PJ provide the fans with this night. All of the people I saw the show with all complemented Mike's awesome guitar, Matt's on time and heavy drums, Stone's ability to be the everything man, and Jeff's standup bass. Of course, how can anyone leave off Eddie. The modern day Jim Morrison. I must say, I have been a fan since "Ten" was released but I am even more a fan now than I was then. It is wonderful to see the band progress from "hey, Eddie Vedder rocks" to "Pearl Jam is not just a band focusing around Eddie." I am honored to be a PJ fan and honored to see the band I grew up with turn into classic rock-n-rollers. Brian Howarth Wesley Keng (weskeng AT cox.net): Just when you think you know what to expect at a Pearl Jam concert they go and throw you a curve ball like this one. This concert was very heavy on early pearl jam...only six of the 24 songs were from the new record. The vast majority of the songs spanned from Ten to the Merkinball single. Anyway about the concert...First it was hot...very very hot....upper 90's, 40% humidity, etc., but that didn't stop the guys. The band was on fire, even saying they were going to play the best version of Crazy Mary they had ever done. And it was great...They really rocked out at the end with Boom and Mike getting together and having a duet solo kinda thing. Other highlights....right before I got Shit Eddie lifted up an envelope and said that someone in the crowd had a matching one under their seat with two backstage passes and that they should come up during the concert and they would go get crazy in Dallas with the band after the concert...later in the concert he said some things that made it seem like he was just kidding...but I am unsure either way. Eddie also tried to do a little spelling in the tag to daughter...I think he spelled something like A...M...A....something....but at the end he said he couldn't spell but thanks for trying. Anyway all in all the band was on fire...I thought I would be hearing a lot more new stuff...but I was happy to hear older songs...some of which I never thought I would hear again, blood especially.
Keep on Rockin in the free world. April Collie: I thought this show was absolutely amazing! The setlist could have contained a few more not-so-often played tracks, but to hear "Nothingman" and a great rendition of "RVM" was worth it. Plus, the passion of the band's playing and performing never ceases to amaze me. Only one thing made the show that much better: meeting Eddie after the show (for the second time). He was patient, kind, and soft-spoken, taking the time to connect with every eagerly awaiting fan. Once again, he has reaffirmed my respect and admiration for him as a musician and as a person. Sincerely, Jeff: All I wanted to hear was Alive tonight, and to have it played as the opener made the 4 plus hours waiting in the fan club line worth it. This was probably the best set list I've every witnessed. They played some great classics and Ed spelled something during the Daughter tag. I don't know what it was and neither did he. He did say he couldn't spell. I have more respect for Arc after seeing how he did it. Every song though was excellent, I'm glad I made that 9 hour drive from New Orleans. Thank you Mike, Jeff, Matt, Boom, Stone, and Ed. Jeff |
