June 13, 2003 - Mid-America Center; Council Bluffs, Iowa
Jeff: Well, all I can say it that this show was the best experience of my life. I had seen Pearl Jam in Alpine Valley in 1998 and thought that was the best. But tonight was even better. It all started with the Ten Club providing me and my brother-in-law Chris with second row seats. Thank you so much. It was like we were right up on stage with the band. The sound and the energy the guys had was incredible. The set list was different but great. Mike's interaction with the crowd could not have been better. It was very cool when he put on the sunglasses thrown up on stage and of course throwing pics out for us fans. Eddie was on fire. Hearing him sound so good after all these years with the same passion of someone just starting out is what we all come to see. After what was apparently a pretty soggy night before in Kansas City, there was no let down. I can't stress enough to the band how much we as fans appreciate it. Eddie, I hope someday you could fit "Angel" and "Hard to Imagine" into a set list. These are two of my favorite songs and would love to hear them live. I hope there is no end in site for you guys as a band and you can make it back to Iowa again, maybe Okoboji, I live only 15 minutes from there. It was very cool to hear you say you had been there during the show. Once again, this night and show was so much fun. Thanks to all the fans for being cool and getting into the show. I think the guys in the band appreciate it too. Jeff Paul Pelowski: Pearl Jam - Council Bluffs, IA You could see and feel the excitement of Pearl Jam's first visit to the Omaha area the second you pulled into the parking lot. Can't exactly put my finger on what was different between this and other Pearl Jam shows, but you could just sense something was going on. Plus it was Friday The 13th, and as Eddie said later in the night "It's not everyday you get to play on Friday the 13th, AND have it go well!" Moved our way inside and walked around a bit and took in more of this "vibe" a little more til getting to our seats. Idlewild was cool, but it was time to get the main course. Eddie came out with this box taped to a chair, we soon figured out this box was a means to looping his vocals as the show started with "Arc." The first, but not last, chills of the evening showed up. I said to a fellow 10C member, "no one can get out on stage and sing like that right off the bat," but OH YEA THAT'S RIGHT this is Eddie Vedder we're talking about. Those CANNOT be human vocal chords!!?!? The band played a very well mixed set of great deep tracks and b-sides, as well as hits we don't get sick of. My highlights were definitely "Faithfull," I hadn't seen that live before. Although they played it fairly slow it was great to hear it live finally. "LBC" was great to see live. Certainly one of the songs from Riot Act I hoped they would do. Just watching them perform that song on stage, and wondering what feelings and emotions are going through their bodies and minds while performing that song, yet again, sent the chills. Probably the biggest highlight of the night, for me, was "Bu$hleaguer." I hadn't really been watching set lists and had no idea they would perform that. It sounded great, whatta rush! On an occasion back in April I had a chance to chat with Mike, yea that Mike, and he warned me they had prepared a little "different and cool and more rockin" version of "Crazy Mary." He didn't lie. His solo, coupled with the amazing Boom sent chills for the who knows how 'many-eth' time. We got two encores with rousing versions of "Free World," "Hide Your Love Away," "Betterman" and etc. Overall, probably the best PJ show I've seen yet...well, maybe other than Lollapalooza '92. Blown away none the less! Paul Pelowski Matt: It was great to see the band in a small venue again (the first since Missoula), and they put on a hell of a show. First off I'll thank the Ten Club for my 11th row center seats. It was the closest I've been so far this tour, and it made the atmosphere spectacular being surrounded by fan clubbers... On to the show... Arc was amazing as an opener. Ed probably layered his voice about 8 times in the song, which lead into a rockin Save You. Mike didn't seem as animated as in past shows at the beginning, but he made up for it later for sure. Some nice surprises included Faithfull, which hasn't been played in a long time, and Dissident, which was amazing to finally see. Driven to Tears and Bu$hleager were both surprises as inclusions in the main set, as they have previously been played during encores. Then came Nothingman. The song is amazing, and is so rarely played, that the moment was just indescribable...Definitely the highlight of the evening. The 1st encore opened with 2 long jams on Betterman and Daughter. Down, another nice surprise, had Mike back in his classic frantic mode, and Jeremy made a surprise performance to close things out. The 2nd encore opened with a long speech by Ed, mostly consumed with discussion of Stone and Mike's new matching haircuts (they both have shaved heads now), and included an auction for Mike's hair, which he had with him in a paper towel on stage! The Crazy Mary jam is continuing to expand, and is amazing to hear each time. Rockin in the Free World closed things out. During the song, the band all seemed to be stunned at the crowd. They all looked around, just in awe of EVERYONE standing on their feet, hands clapping in unison in the air. Ed was basically speechless for a short while, just looking around, shaking his head...pretty much stunned. All in all, it was another fabulous show by the boys. Who knows what to expect in Fargo, but I'll see ya'll there!! Matt |
