June 16, 2003 - Xcel Energy Center; St. Paul, Minnesota
Insignificant: Pearl Jam takes the stage and starts off immediately with "Of The Girl" which really rocked live. It was apparent that Eddie wasn't feeling well. He was drinking hot tea and water. After the first few songs, I was worried that he wasn't feeling well enough to play and enjoy it. But after the next few songs, his mood picked up and he was jamming. The boys put on such a great show. I have such a high respect for them and their relationship to each other. At one point in the show a guy named Michael from the first row kept shouting, "Lukin." Eddie said he couldn't play it but if the guy knew the words, he could come on stage and sing it. Then Eddie said he would think about it and they played "Better Man." Well, after that, sure enough, Eddie invited Michael up on stage and he sang "Lukin." It was so awesome. Another awesome point in the show: Another guy from the front row had a cell phone. Eddie motioned him to toss it up to him. Eddie then proceeded to sing into the cell phone. It was great! A lot of lucky fans tonight. Three guys in the first three rows each caught a tambourine from Eddie. Mike was tossing out picks and Matt tossed out his drumsticks. During the encore they played "Save You" followed by "State of Love and Trust" and then "Bu$hleaguer" I just wanted to die. Eddie kept putting his hand over his heart to us. It has been five long years since they last visited Minnesota. What a show, well worth the wait! Definitely one of the best I have been to - even though they all are great. I just want to thank the 10 club yet again for taking such great care of their fans and giving the clubbers great seats :) Thanks a million, you have no idea what it means to me.
Insignificant Joe Osterloh: Let me just say that I've been a Pearl Jam fan since the beginning and I've always supported them. I love their raw, fierce energy at live shows and their views on current events. The show that I saw at the Excel Energy Center on June 16th has got to be one of the best live concerts I've ever been to. And I've been to at least over 50 shows in the past 10 years. Pearl Jam's performance was unbridled with raw talent and the honesty I've come to expect over their brief but astonishing career. Granted, this is only the 2nd time I've seen them live, but when you're a devoted fan like I am, when you go to the shows it seems like you've seen them a hundred times. Highlights for me from the show were "Alive" and "Black." Oldies but goodies so to speak, I think the songs from the first album are the best work the band has done and it shows in live performances. Overall the show was a 9 out of 10. A lot of energy, great production and a great set. I can't wait to see them on the next tour. Too bad they can't tour every summer! Peace and rock on!
Joe Osterloh, Trevor Johnson: My third PJ show, and second in a row. First of all, Idlewild is a great band. I gave my Ten Club tickets (for this show) to one of my best friends who is just as big a fan of PJ as I am, but isn't in the Ten Club, so I was actually sitting towards the back of the arena, but still decent seats. It was great to hear a very different set from the night before. It's so great when a band can switch things up like that, night by night. Just some highlights: Last Exit was great. Before Corduroy, Ed sang "looking California... feeling Minnesota" from Soundgarden, which I don't think most of the crowd got, but I loved it. It was great to hear Immortality live, which is one of Paul's (my friend that was there with me) favorite PJ songs. Thin Air and Grievance were great additions to the set from Binaural. Driven to Tears was great, but by this time, the crowd started to tune out. Unfortunately, the Twin Cities are pretty much fans of the oldies and were bored by the newer stuff, it seemed. Paul and I especially noticed this, sitting towards the back of the arena. (I blame the corporate rock stations here.) It was amazing to see Pearl Jam turn the crowd around 180 degrees when they played Alive and closed the first set with Black. I was actually really impressed with the crowd from that point on. I think the band was, too. They were going crazy and feeding off our energy. I really wanted to hear Save You live, and sure enough, we got a great version of it. And Bu$hleaguer! Holy crap! Paul and I were totally surprised. Before Ed started Better Man, some guy in the front row requested a song, but I couldn't hear what it was. Ed asked, "Can you sing it? Do you know the words? Well, let me play this one, then you can sing that one." Paul and I didn't really think anything of it, but as soon as Better Man was done, this guy was on stage bowing to all the guys in the band, and before we knew it, they were playing Lukin with this guy named Michael (Benton?) from Fargo singing it. He actually sounded pretty good and I think the crowd was in shock, but we all loved it. What other band would do something like that? I was so glad to hear Leaving Here... I love that song. The last encore began, and think the band and the crowd were just feeding off each other. The house lights started to come on during RITFW, and I knew Yellow Ledbetter would finish off the evening. The crowd was so appreciative and the band was loving it. I've honestly never heard a crowd that loud. I'm proud to be from the Twin Cities. Thank you again, Pearl Jam, for another fantastic show. See you in East Troy. |
