June 24, 2003 - Germain Amphitheatre; Columbus, Ohio
Jason Boucher: The Buzzocks were a solid opening band that set a great mood for the evening. My dad and mom came to the show with us, and they really got a kick out of seeing the Buzzcocks. My dad lived in L.A. in the early 80's, and was stoked to see them again. The crowd in Ohio was a little different from the last time around. For true fans the set list was very solid. Can't keep is a great opening song, they opened Cleveland with it also. To my surprise, they jumped right into a solid version of Daughter that got the crowd into the mood. 1/2 Full is one of my favorite tracks off of Riot Act and they played it perfectly. Go was full of energy as always and a perfect set up to Save you. That song is so killer live, you can feel the energy streaming out of McCready's guitar (It looked like he was playing the flying V Les Paul ). Ghost was smooth, most of the people there didn't know it very well. Better Man had the crowd screaming, what a great sing along. Grievance and Evacuation were great, full of energy, and just rare enough for the die-hards to separate themselves from the main stream. Then the sun went down, and McCready absolutely tore Even Flow up, what a classic rock and roll riff. I was pleasantly surprised to hear in Hiding, one of my favorites off of Yield. Cropduster finished off the Riot Act set in stellar fashion. Great Song. Corduroy rocked as always, another McCready highlight of the evening, this guy has to be the premier lead guitarist of the last 20yrs. Small Town got the crowd singing and me dancing with my baby. Red Mosquito is such a moody song, I love it. I have looked over many of the set lists on this tour and I can say I haven't seen another concert where Ed actually made up a song for the town they were in. Well, my friends, Ohio got a song. Although I couldn't hear all of the words (that's what the bootlegs are for), it went a little something like...." Oh Me Oh My OH.....Passing through Ohio." How sweet is that? Rearviewmirror ended the first set in Rockin fashion. Given to Fly is an absolute classic, and it gets better every time I hear it live. Wishlist and Not For You both sounded great, and led up to what for me, was the highlight of the entire night, Footsteps. Ed stoked the Harmonica, and stone played the acoustic riff that made me fall in love with the band 13 yrs. ago. Evolution and Jeremy rounded out the first encore perfectly. I have heard Jeremy at least 1000 times, but when you hear it live with the crowd so into it, you fall in love with it all over again. I was glad to hear Fuckin Up by Neil, since we heard Rockin in the Free World in Cleveland. Yellow Ledbetter has to be the best closing song in any concert I have ever been to. Such a beautiful song. Steve Ray Vaughn would be impressed by McCready's sense of the blues, and Rock Mix. Kudos to you PJ for another memorable concert, my last of this tour. Keep Rockin. Luke Marsh: Last night was the second time I've seen Pearl Jam live and I must say they did not disappoint. I went to the show with my nephew and a good friend who were not big Pearl Jam fans before the show. From start to finish the band was on and the crowd was rockin'! They started the show with Can't Keep (one of my favorites off the new album) and went right into Daughter. My buddy, who has never been to a Pearl Jam show, looked over at me and said how cool must it be for these guys to have something like 20,000 fans or so singing all the words to their songs. Next came 1/2 Full, Go, which got a huge response and some nice solo work by Mr. McCready, Save You and Ghost. I'm not sure if it was the section I was in or what but everyone knew the words to the old and new songs, not just the old ones. After a beautiful version of Better Man, Grievance and Evacuation (not a personal fave but it sounded good last night) led to Even Flow. Now I have heard several live versions of the song but I can't wait to hear the CD. Mike McCready, in my humble opinion, is one of the greatest guitar players out there and he had that guitar talkin' last night. Amazing solo, amazing song. Next was my favorite song off of Yield, In Hiding, Cropduster, and Corduroy with McCready's guitar work leading the way. Small Town was great and I tipped my buddy off when it was time to scream "HELLOOOOOOOOOO." That song is always amazing live. Red Mosquito was a very pleasant surprise and sounded great. Then they did a little improv about Ohio which was hard to hear because the section I was in was so loud. I do know every time he said Ohio the crowd went nuts. Rearviewmirror ended the opening set and as always was unbelievable. Somewhere during this set the crowd went crazy (I can't remember when exactly) screaming and banging on their chairs in appreciation. Ed said we sounded like the 17 year locusts. Definitely a cool moment... I hate to admit I missed what he said when they came out for the first encore. It was a hot night in C-Bus and we went down to get some liquid refreshment. The first song played was Given To Fly followed by Wishlist and Not For You. The lead up to the next song was intriguing. Ed said it was a song that had been around for as long as they had been and although some of us may not have heard of it he hoped we liked it. Footsteps was an unexpected treat and everyone went crazy. I was pleasantly surprised to hear how many people knew the words and people in my section were singing even when Ed wasn't. DTE was next and sounded great and Jeremy closed the first encore. Toward the end of Jeremy Ed just backed up and let crowd sing and seemed to take it all in. Great song! The band came out for the final time (We thought) and played Fuckin' Up. I won't say I would have been disappointed if they had closed with it but I was hoping it wouldn't be the end. Ed thanked the crowd, said goodnight, grabbed his wine and other things and left the stage. Not many but some people were ready to leave and my nephew started walking away when I told him to hold on for a minute. The crowd was definitely not ready for the show to be over and much to my surprise they came back out. Ed said we could thank Stone Gossard for this one (Thank you Stone!!!) and they played a beautiful version of Yellow Ledbetter to end a fantastic show. I know I've left some things out but these were the highlights for me. The band always leaves you wanting more and one day I'll hear Black and Alive live, maybe next time? Both my friend and my nephew several times on the way home said they will definitely be going to see Pearl Jam next time they are in town. I'm pretty sure everyone else in attendance last night is saying the same thing... |
