June 25, 2003 - DTE Energy Music Theatre; Clarkston, Michigan
Gerald R. Urquhart: The show was absolutely amazing. Pearl Jam really reinforced their love of touring and their allegiance to their fans. Ed came out before the show "to thank the fans who showed up early" and did a version of The Kids are Alright before introducing the Buzzcocks. It was a nice touch to start off a great evening. The Buzzcocks ROCKED! They are pure high-energy punk, like the early days of the Clash and Sex Pistols. Autonomy was perhaps the best song in the list, followed by Ever Fallen in Love. It was the first time I've seen them live and they were awesome. PJ came on and did an amazing set. Twenty-five songs, spanning all their albums, with a couple covers and some oddities like Breath, Crazy Mary, and of course, Yellow Ledbetter. RVM at the end of the main set was downright spectacular! Some peripheral fans were complaining afterward about the lack of material from their first album (only Evenflow), but the coverage of all their albums was so great I don't know how anyone could complain. I haven't seen the band enough to know if it's an act, but they appeared to come out for the second encore as a response to the fans, not because it was necessarily planned. It was a nice touch and made us feel like we were important to them. I want to comment on their plan to offset the Carbon Emissions for the 2003 tour with reforestation. I think this is an excellent idea. As a rainforest biologist myself, I feel that restoring the forests with native trees is an excellent way for the first world to offset its gluttony. In Nicaragua, where I work, such a project would be a godsend to help a severely depressed country preserve and restore its natural treasures. Kudos to PJ! Gerald R. Urquhart Ph.D. nik:
Hey all Jammers out there. By now you've all read the set list, so, let me mention a few things. Eddie was HILARIOUS at times during the show. He poked some fun at all the big corporate signs up around the amphitheater, and had the spot light person shine the light on a few of them. When it got to the Miller Light sign, Eddie sarcastically joked that it was a really great beer, hehe, and then said that he could take a piss in a cup and some fan in the front would drink it and say it's better than Miller Light. He then commented about the Detroit Free Press newspaper sign, questioning if it was REALLY free... hehe. Then, he made the most funny comments about Big Boy (a restaurant around Michigan). He asked if it was some sort of restaurant, and then said that Big Boy sounds like the name of a Dildo to him!! A bit later on he talked about Sheryl Crow, and even said that she likes the Big Boy!!! LOL As far as the songs go, it was a very tight set list. I was real happy to hear many songs I had not heard at my Previous concerts (Virg. Beach 2000, and Chicago 1998). Glorified G and Breath were awesome, and Rival was a nice surprise, as I'm pretty sure it was the 1st it has been played on the U.S. tour of 2003. Evolution sounded really great, and from the bootlegs I've heard, the Bu$hleaguer they played last night was the best sounding version all tour. It was great to hear Baba again ... love that song, and I should also mention that Jeff ran in circles around Mike during that at one point, probably did about 5-6 circles around him, all while playing still. Funny Stuff! All in all, it was a great night ... the only downer was that the Season Ticket holders and Corporate seats for the DTE Music Center, seemed to have gotten all the good seats for the show. I got there at 1pm in the afternoon and waited for 2.5 hours for my tickets, and they were rather far back ... like 25 rows back, and way way to the far far right of the venue up against the right wall (I couldn't even see BOOM or MATT the ENTIRE night!!!) Oh well, I know it was not Ten Club's fault, so all in all I was happy and it was a great night. Oh, and to the bare naked male streaker out by my car in the parking lot after the show........ Ugh... Now that is scorched on my retina forever, thanks a LOT! lol. Jason Saunders: I can't say I've ever been to or seen a better show. After listening to bootlegs all last three years from the 2000 tour I started to think that Pearl Jam was losing their intensity. If there was any word to describe this show it's intense. One of the best parts about it was the atmosphere. It was like there was this political message going on throughout the show. Eddie voiced a lot of opinions during this show. At one point he had spotlights on the advertisements by the stage and was ranting about them. I made my way to the show with my friend at about 6. I've never been to the DTE Energy music Theater before but it's a really nice looking place. There's lawn seats up around the pavilion seats. They have big monitors with cameras on the band, so during the show you got close-ups. I wonder if they're going to release any of the footage. Animal was a real surprise for them to start out with. A big change from last year's quiet openers. Eddie was amazingly alive tonight. So was Mike. Stone and Jeff just kinda swayed back and forth and stood there, except toward the end they got pretty riled up. Jeff ended up running circles around Mike. I loved the set list. They included tons of rarities, like "Breath" and "Glorified G." Right before Crazy Mary Ed started making comments that received a lot of mixed responses. I remember hearing "shut the f**k up and play some music!" there was also a lot of cheering. During Soon Forget Eddie made a comment about smoking pot. "If you are a pot smoker I highly suggest that you get one of these" referring to the ukelele. Best damn concert I've ever seen. |
