June 28, 2003 - Molson Amphitheatre; Toronto, Ont., Canada
Kyle: I must say that I have never really felt compelled to write a review of a concert, until I saw Pearl Jam for the first time in Toronto last night. I have to say it was about the most amazing experience of my entire life, definitely the best show I have ever seen, unseating The Who from last September. Being Ten Club members, it seemed like an extremely long day, having to be at the Molson Amphitheatre so much in advance to pick up the tickets, and after hours of waiting, buying merchandise and just chatting to other PJ fans, until the crowd that had started to build in the venue all started to cheer, everyone realizing Eddie was coming to the stage for his pre-set. He came out, did an awesome version of You've Got To Hide Your Love Away, which the crowd was really into. He introduced the Buzzcocks, who seemed pretty good, I had never heard them but enjoyed them nonetheless. After seeing Eddie though, we only had one thing on our minds, and that was PJ hitting the stage. Finally, after what seemed like hours of waiting, PJ hit the stage and the crowd went nuts, almost drowning out all of Release. This is really the story of the entire night, the crowd would just not let up, never been apart of anything like that before. After the opener, they tore through some amazing, very upbeat songs, the best of which was probably Hail Hail, being a big No Code fan. Then, between one of these beginning songs, Eddie asks us if we want to do a survey, and as he is about to ask us the questions, he looks up from his book and says, "Oh yeah, it's great to be here." And WOW! The crowd went nuts, so loud he couldn't even talk over them, and he just let the crowd go for what seemed like at least five minutes, just looking around at the band and to the crowd, looking bewildered, then an entire stadium chant of "EDDIE, EDDIE!" broke out, before Eddie threw down the book he had been reading, and after the longest ovation I have ever been part of, he asked "Do you still want to do the survey?" to which he continued to do a survey about the war in Iraq. Basically, it said you had two choices, you could choose a) which was being against the war, or b) which was being an idiot. PJ then continued through what was a very amazing set list, playing some definite surprises like In My Tree and just amazing regulars like Even Flow, which Mike was totally on fire during. He looked like he was having such an amazing time, it was incredible to watch. Everyone seemed to have their moment to shine. After the first Encore Break in which the fans were crazy during, the band came back out and broke into Bushleaguer, then Eddie came out decked in the Bush mask and glitter jacket, to which everybody continued to cheer for. Just hilarious watching Eddie dance and spin around in this mask and jacket. He placed the mask, which had a cigarette in its mouth, on the mic stand, and following the song, made out with the mask. One of the funniest things I have ever witnessed. The rest of the set was awesome, lots of covers, and following Do the Evolution and Crazy Mary, which Stone and Boom owned, Eddie comes to the mic and says something like, "We don't know what the fuck is going on!" as the rest of the guys are deciding what to play. Spin the Black Circle was a welcome track, and RITFW was simply amazing, the guys being so into. The coolest part of the night was during Baba O'Riley, Ontario Place (where the venue was located) was having some Canada Day weekend fireworks, and nearing the end of Baba, Eddie pointed to lawn area and everyone turned around as these amazing fireworks went off at what seemed like the perfect timing. It was the perfect ending to the show, and made my day completely. All in all, definitely worth the years I have been waiting to see Pearl Jam, highlights for me probably being Release, Hail Hail, Given to Fly, Even Flow, Bushleaguer, and Baba, and just about everything else. The crowd was simply amazing, I had chills during the standing ovation, anyone who loves hearing a live crowd needs to get this boot, definitely worth every penny, as the guys were right on point the entire night and loving every minute of the show. This was indeed, the most perfect night! -Kyle Dave: I am utterly speechless. This show was greatest show I have ever seen, If anyone wants to get a good show on c.d. then this one is for you. First started with release, which was the first time I heard it, has to be their best opener. Breakerfall came next which was a huge rush, one of my most favourite PJ rockin tunes. And for my most favourite part of the show, a truly inspiring time was when they did a wicked version In My Tree, which was the first time I have seen it done live. It sounded unbelievable has to be the best song they have. Love Boat Captain was another highlight, everyone had their lighters out. Then a wicked cover that I was hoping they would do by the Ramones. They had superb jams on tunes like Crazy Mary, and some new tune that blew away the audience. It was a vocal jam that Ed said that it was just for practice. The crowd sang the entire intro to Better Man without any help. Another great tune was Even Flow which Mike had two kick ass solos one slower, then one ripping fast. Ed did a speech about his views on the Iraq war, and the whole crowd agreed with them. Ed also dressed up in a bush mask, and cool sparkley jacket, danced around, you could tell that he was loving it. Bushleager is the best spoken word song I have heard, they pulled off a wicked version live. They then played 4 cool covers Fortunate Son, Rockin' in the Free World, Crazy Mary which totally floored me the best version I have heard ever by them, and then Baba O'Riley to close. At the end there was fireworks to celebrate Canada's Birthday on July 1. Man there was so much that went on I forget a lot what happened. They also did a tribute to Ben Harper who is playing in a few days.
Anyway thanks Pearl Jam Eric Astrauskas: First off we'd like to thank the Ten Club for the amazing seats. Even though my number is approximately 100,000 our seats were great, close enough to see Mike's super-crazy fret work. Well, it was still a blur since he is just too fast for the human eye. Eddie was in great spirits. Sharing his wealth with the fans with some of his classic red wine. We're holding Eddie to his word to put Toronto on the next tour ("an elite group of about 10 cities"). The show was awesome. A little bit of everything. lots of great mellow tunes and hard stuff. It was indescribable! The solo for Even Flow was such a spectacle. It was so amazing that Eddie wouldn't finish up the last verse. He just kept Mike going and going like the Energizer Bunny. Mike got a kick out of it himself. Crazy Mary was another highlight of this show. Extended version with Boom. Just speechless. I can't wait to hear what Better Man sounds like on the official bootleg. Eddie let us sing most of the song. There's not too many words that could describe this show. It was pure synergy between the band and crowd. See you in Montreal. Zzzzzz. |
