Dear Grandma Pearl,
Hello and Happy Holidays! We hope all is well with you. We'll be taking our usual vacation again but wanted to drop you a note first to thank you for the delicious jam you sent. You always know the best gifts. In case you haven't seen the guys lately, here's what's going on now and what's going to be happening with Pearl Jam in 1998.
At the top of the list is the first single from their fifth album, Yield. It's called "Given To Fly" and a song named "Pilate" is going to be the b-side. They're going to release it to radio first so check your local radio station on December 22nd to hear it. Next, do you remember that home video we've been talking about for so long? Well, we're getting some sweet but coy signals that something very cool is going to happen on that. We know, we know...but it's got to happen some time, doesn't it?! Hmmmm...we think so. :) Maybe some of it will even be shown on the music channel. Maybe it could have something like four live songs and footage of the band, now that would be cool! It would be so great to see some cool film on the guys, maybe even a movie, since we can't bring our cameras to the shows. Oh well, we think it's great that we get to audiotape so we'll be happy with that!
A couple of things we're going to be hearing before Yield comes out will be on the radio. Eddie and Jeff did an interview and, along with songs from Yield, it's going to be played on 102.1 The Edge on Live in Toronto on Thursday, January 27th from 6 to 7:30 p.m. EST. The radio station is also hoping to cybercast it in Real Audio for those not in the Toronto area. (visit http://edge.passport.ca/ & http://www.virtuallycanadian.com)
Then, they're planning another Self-Pollution Radio-type show on January 31st! It's one of those satellite feeds that go around the world with live music and the guys playing records and talking. More on that later.
Well, we're really having a hard time waiting for Yield to be released on February 3rd! Some people have already heard the new songs and say they're wonderful, but of course, we all knew they would be. :) OK, then Pearl Jam is going to Maui to do a show on February 20th. Aloha baybee, how we wish we were all going to be there! You're going, aren't you? Since Mudhoney will be opening for PJ, we think "Lukin" is one song that PJ just has to play for Matt Lukin. It would be too perfect!
After Maui, PJ are going to New Zealand and Australia. We'll put their schedule below so you can see where they're going but we don't know who's opening down there yet. There may be a live radio broadcast during this leg of the tour too but nothing's been quite firmed up yet on that and the U.S. and some Canada dates will be coming later also. One show they're thinking about doing is the next Tibetan Freedom Concert in Washington, DC in June. Fingers crossed on that one!

~Q&A~Q&A~Q&A~Q&A~

A: Maybe we will.
Q: According to a recent interview, Jeff was quoted as saying about appearing with the Stones, "Are they really a functioning, relating group of guys?'' wondered Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament, speaking by phone from Seattle. ``If so, maybe they can give us some insight. Or are (we) going to go, like, `God, I don't want to be in that situation in 30 years'?" So, please tell us, was it a good experience and can PJ see themselves in that position in 30 years?
A: It was a good experience.

Q: I'm about to buy a new drumkit and I'd like to know what does Jack's kit consist of...sizes, brands, etc. and is it the same setup he used in RHCP and Eleven?
A: He uses different brands and sizes. Most of the time he uses DW drums. The cymbals change often and for a lot of the new album he was using an old chrome Ludwig kit and a new Slingerland kit as well as DW's. Don't know about what he used with Eleven and RHCP.

A: Chrome ones (humbucking) and white ones (p-90's) original Gibson pickups.
Q: What type of distortion pedal does Stone use?
