When music producer and impresario Maurice Starr lost the vocal group New Edition to a business dispute, he set about to create a group that would appeal to the same young audience. The result was New Kids On The Block, a quintet that scored such hits as "Hangin' Tough" and "Step By Step," and spawned a merchandising operation that, according to Forbes magazine, made the group the top-earning entertainers of 1991.
"The band was heavily merchandised and makes a fascinating subject to collect because of the diverse range of products you may encounter," advises the Goldmine Price Guide To Rock 'N' Roll Memorabilia. How diverse? These are just some of the more than $1-billion worth of items sold that you might find in the attic of a devoted fan of the Kids: backpacks, balloons, binders, blankets, book covers, bubble-gum, card games, cassette players, coloring books, dolls, fanny packs, board games, hats, jigsaw puzzles, lapel pins, locker mirrors, notebooks, pillows, radios, shoelaces, sleeping bags, slippers, socks, sports bottles, watches and yo-yos. Enterprising fans also treasure collectibles that were never available commercially, including backstage passes and even court documents that are in the public record.
