As important as Basie's K.C. units were, the most prominent small groups of the big band era were Benny Goodman's. The sextet was quite adventurous; it emphasized electricity--literally and figuratively--via amplification in the electric guitar of Charlie Christian, and motorization in the vibraphone of Lionel Hampton. These two, coupled to Goodman's clarinet, made a striking front line that helped make "Flying Home" a swing era hit which remains a jazz anthem often heard as a finale.

Solos: Goodman; Christian; Hampton; Goodman; Rec. New York, October 2, 1939. Columbia 35254 (mx. WCO 26132-A); Originally Released 1939
