  Wham! (OK, George Michael) was one of the few acts ever to successfully navigate upstream from teen idol to pop sophisticate. The George Michael-Andrew Ridgeley duo broke large around Labor Day 1984 with the Up-With-People-ish "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go." Even before that hit, though, Michael alone had tracked "Careless Whisper" twice-once, unsuccessfully, in Muscle Shoals with Jerry Wexler, then again, quite successfully, in London. It reached #1 early in 1985, the second of seven consecutive Top 10 singles for the duo who officially split up in 1986.
