One of the first things that William Paley did after taking control of the Columbia Broadcast System in 1928 was to sign a band of topnotch New York area musicians that played over Newark, New Jersey's WOR radio. So it was that by an odd twist of fate Donald Voorhees, already a Columbia Records artist, became leader of the first CBS radio band, hired by the man who ten years later would buy and revive the very same Columbia label. This hot dance version of "My Blue Heaven," the #1 hit of 1927, is distinguished by some vigorous ensemble playing-and the deft work of pioneer jazz slide trombonist Miff Mole.
