Until "Born To Run," Bruce Springsteen was a developing artist with much critical acclaim, a growing public following (especially in the Northeast), but not a whole lot of commercial success. Indeed, without a small but vehement cadre of supporters within the halls of Columbia Records, he might not have gotten to release his third album-until people in the company started to hear the work in progress, "Born To Run." Condensing and realizing his vision into a masterful four-minute-plus blend of icons Orbison and Spector, channeled through himself into a perfect pop symphony, New Jersey's Springsteen became his own "Boss"-and a new rock icon was born.
