  When the Seattle grunge sound took over the top of the charts in 1991, two bands led the way, Nirvana and Pearl Jam, but Pearl Jam did not come out of nowhere. Members of the band had been in two previous mainstays of the great Seattle scene: Green Day and Mother Love Bone. The inventive tunings and intertwining guitar play of Stone Gossard and Mike McCready literally set the tone for the intensely personal lyric content and mega-impassioned vocals of charismatic lead singer Eddie Vedder.
