Cole Porter might have been reluctant to compose songs for a show based on a play by Shakespeare which he considered too highbrow for Broadway, but he was clearly inspired when he created the memorable score for Kiss Me, Kate. A brilliant musical adaptation of the Bard's The Taming Of The Shrew, Kate had a long run of 1,077 performances, following its December 30, 1948 premiere-and it became the first musical in history to win the Tony Award, which had been created two years earlier.
