The first, Sweet Charity, was based on the Federico Fellini film, Nights Of Cabiria, and starred Gwen Verdon as a naive dance hall hostess forever falling in love with the wrong men. With a brilliant score by Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields, and terrific choreography by Bob Fosse (who won a Tony for his work), it opened on January 29, 1966 and enjoyed a run of 608 performances.
