Sally Mae Isley put a little something extra in everything she cooked. Love and piety in the mustard greens; R&B in the rice and beans; and silky doo-wop harmonies in the sweet potato pie. Her sons Kelly, Rudy, Ronald, Ernie and Marvin grew up with strong limbs and mighty throats, and took their notion of brotherly love from the breakfast table in Lincoln Heights, Ohio to the nation. Heralding a new day of undiluted soul, "It's Your Thing" was a declaration of independence to soldiers and peace marchers alike. With a nasty, hip-driven bass line and thick-cut horns, the Isleys gave attitude to a new generation.
