Elvis Crespo
by Arthur Levy
At age 28, Elvis Crespo has already established his first signature tune, "Suavemente" ("Softly"), a song that set a new chart record when it spent eight weeks at #1 on Billboard's Hot Latin Top 40 in 1998. Born in New York of Puerto Rican descent, Crespo moved to Guaynabo as a child where his dreams were split between joining Menudo and playing for the Yankees. His musical desire ultimately superceded baseball (though he is still an avid ballplayer) and led him through several Latin orchestras as a teenage singer. After joining Grupo Mania in 1995, he wrote and sang "Linda Es," a huge hit that served as the springboard for his solo career, one of the most meteoric rises to stardom in recent tropical music history.
