The previously moody, often dark side of James Taylor was nowhere to be found on his 1977 album, J.T. Reunited with old producer Peter Asher, and displaying a newfound confidence and casual vitality in concert, Taylor seemed to have finally succumbed to the quiet joys of domestic life at this particular point in his life and career. Although later dismissed by the singer as "bubblegum," "Your Smiling Face," an upbeat tune written for his daughter, went Top 20; significantly, its pop success helped Taylor expand his core audience with new devotees both younger and older than his long-time fans.
