Reportedly named after vocalist Bobby "Kimball" Toteaux (as well as, of course, Dorothy's little dog) Toto began life as studio musicians who coalesced while working together on Boz Scaggs' Silk Degrees album. Via topnotch performances and production on both their own and others' recordings, they helped shape the sound of '70s and '80s pop. "Rosanna," from Toto IV, was written for upcoming actress Rosanna Arquette, then dating Toto keyboardist Steve Porcaro. Said Ms. Arquette in a 1983 Rolling Stone interview, "My guy didn't write that song, David Paich wrote it. It has to do with my showing up at the studio at four a.m., bringing them juice and beer."
