Cyndi Lauper had been singing professionally on and off for ten years before her "overnight" success. Propelled by an unshakable melody and a memorable video, "Girls Just Want To Have Fun," the debut single from her debut solo album, She's So Unusual, made Lauper an instant sensation. Her kooky-trashy look became the teenie rage, her self-assured manifesto their anthem and her spunky post-punk style the bridge to New Wave. Much to her credit, Lauper refused to remain a monodimensional, manic-misfit caricature and has since continued to produce uncompromising, top-quality music.
