  This quartet of refugees from various groups in L.A.'s power-popping "Paisley Underground" banded together to pay homage to the sounds of the '60s. Producer David Kahne honed in on its four members' strengths, resulting in a bright, Beatle-esque pop sound topped with classic girl-group vocals. The subtleties and charm of their 1984 debut album went underappreciated in an era of slick, post-New Age pop. By 1986, the public grew a little more adventurous and met the now more-center-leaning Bangles in the middle with Different Light, which spawned four hit singles, and its '88 successor, Everything, which included the chart-topping torchsong, "Eternal Flame."
