When Johnny Mathis' musical guidance was diverted from Columbia's jazz division and over to pop svengali Miller, what emerged was a new sound, all melted caramel. Singles like "Wonderful Wonderful," "It's Not For Me To Say" and "Chances Are" made Mathis' seductive voice the soundtrack of make-out sessions in countless finished basements, and when twelve of his lushest confections were collected in 1958 on a long-playing album called Johnny's Greatest Hits, it caused a sensation: no more getting off the sofa and interrupting activities to change the 45s. The album stayed on the best-seller charts for an astonishing 400-plus weeks.
