  The faith of Blind Willie Johnson (1902-1949) was gravely tested when his stepfather threw lye in his face, blinding him at age seven. That faith deepened into lifelong devotion to the gospel, to which he brought a bluesman's raging vocals and bottleneck slide guitar phrasing. His first batch of recordings in 1927 (including "Mother's Children Have A Hard Time," "Dark Was The Night-Cold Was The Ground" and "If I Had My Way I'd Tear This Building Down") were followed a year later with this future blues-rock standard.
