The 1982 "discovery" of Texas-bred Stevie Ray Vaughan (1954-1990) involved the Rolling Stones (who brought him and his band Double Trouble to New York), Jerry Wexler (who sent them to Montreux), David Bowie (who hired them to play on the hit "Let's Dance"), and finally John Hammond (who signed the band to Epic and executive produced Vaughan's debut album). By 1985, when Vaughan was voted "Entertainer of the Year" at the W.C. Handy Blues Awards, he had become the dominant figure in blues-rock, comparable only to predecessors Jimi Hendrix in the 1960s and Johnny Winter in the '70s.
