AWARE/COLUMBIA RECORDS RELEASES
SPECIAL COLLECTOR'S EDITION OF THE THORNS
FEATURING A 13 TRACK BONUS ACOUSTIC "SUNSET SESSION" CD
North American Fall Tour Dates Announced
In Stores Now - BUY CD
While touring this summer with our full electric band, we were often asked to play acoustically for small audiences at radio stations and record stores. People seemed to really respond to these "au natural" performances, which were really a trip back to where we started, since most of these songs were originally written with just the three of us and acoustic guitars. So many people along the way asked where they could get acoustic recordings of us that we decided to spend an afternoon at the end of our tour and document our album live in acoustic form. Tony and Rob from the band came along to supply a little upright bass and percussion, and we let the tape roll! Hope you enjoy it!
THE THORNS, August 2003
Aware/Columbia Records has just released, on Tuesday, October 21, a special collector's edition of The Thorns, the critically-acclaimed debut album from the groundbreaking acoustic vocal trio comprised of Matthew Sweet, Shawn Mullins, and Pete Droge. The newly-reconfigured album includes the 13 track bonus acoustic "Sunset Session" CD, an "unplugged" version of The Thorns in its entirety recorded on July 28, 2003, at Sunset Sound in Los Angeles. The Thorns, including the "Sunset Session" CD, is in stores now.
Having recently completed a tour of Europe and Australia as the special guest artists on the Dixie Chicks "Top Of The World Tour," the Thorns will hit the road for a North American tour in November, both as a headlining act and as support for John Mayer (see itinerary following).
Produced by Brendan O'Brien, the original configuration of The Thorns was released in May 2003 to choruses of critical acclaim and has gone on to SoundScan more than 100,000 copies. Entertainment Weekly picked the Thorns as one of the magazine's 10 Artists To Watch In 2003. Andy Langer, writing in Esquire, called the album "...an ambitious collection of harmony driven tunes where its sum is greater than its considerable parts." According to Creative Loafing's Roni Sarig, The Thorns contains "...some pretty nice rootsy pop, full of classic 70s MOR harmonizing and songcraft."
"I Can't Remember," the first single from The Thorns, was a #1 Most Added track at AAA radio while a video for the track was added to VH1's "Inside Track" rotation. The single has been making waves internationally, garnering airplay in the UK and Germany among other territories.
The group has also established a reputation for incredible live performances. Marty Hughley, reviewing a Thorns live show for The Oregonian, raved "...even if many of the fans who nearly filled the theater came out of affection for the previous work of any of the three, what they got was a group of voices and writing styles meshing in glorious harmony -- recalling CSN, Simon & Garfunkel, and other antecedents, but sounding effortlessly distinctive and ageless."
