MAKEOVERS: Martina McBride, Collin Raye, Patty Loveless and others
pay homage to their predecessors with remakes of country classics
on Tribute to Tradition, out September 8 on Columbia Records.
Among the highlights: Joe Diffie singing the 1973 Charlie Rich hit
Behind Closed Doors; Mary Chapin Carpenter's remake of Don
Gibson's Oh, Lonesome Me, featuring Mark Knopfler, Vince Gill
and Steve Wariner on guitar; and a new tune with an all-star cast
including Merle Haggard, Clint Black, Dwight Yoakam and Randy Travis.
Sony Music Nashville will donate $50,000 against the album's royalties
to help fund a planned retirement community for country artists.
