Much Anticipated Action-Adventure From Director Ridley Scott Also Lands In Movie Theaters Today
Songs From the Martian Encompasses Disco Era's Most Renowned and Beloved Cassics
Oct 2, 2015
NEW YORK, Oct. 2, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Columbia Records is releasing "Songs From The Martian" and "The Original Motion Picture Score" by composer Harry Gregson-Williams to the critically acclaimed and much anticipated movie "The Martian," available digitally today at iTunes here: Songs Album and Score. A deluxe edition of the album, "The Martian Deluxe Soundtrack" (Songs Album and Score) is exclusively available at Amazon here. "The Martian" also opens nationwide today and features a star-studded cast, including Matt Damon in the lead role as Astronaut Mark Watney.
The '70s-laden album is comprised of some of the greatest classics from disco's golden era (tracklist below) including "Turn The Beat Around" (Vickie Sue Robinson), "Hot Stuff" (Donna Summer), "Rock The Boat" (Hues Corporation), "Waterloo" (ABBA), and "I Will Survive"(Gloria Gaynor), and others.
The music evinces the plight of the film's protagonist, Astronaut Mark Watney, played by Matt Damon (the Bourne film series), who during a manned mission to Mars set in the not-too-distant future is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet with only meager supplies - and limited distractions - including a playlist of '70's disco music left behind by Commander Lewis played by Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty, Interstellar).
Watney must rally his optimistic spirit, drawing upon his ingenuity and wit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. NASA and a team of international scientists race against the clock to bring "The Martian" home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible rescue mission. Based on a best-selling novel, and helmed by master director Ridley Scott, "The Martian" features a star studded cast that includes Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Pena, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Donald Glover, among others.
The Martian's original motion picture score is composed by Harry Gregson-Williams (The Shrek Franchise, Man On Fire, The Chronicles Of Narnia). Gregson-Williams also previously scored director Ridley Scott's 2005 movie Kingdom Of Heaven.

"One child, one teacher, one book and one pen can change the world." - Malala
Sep 30, 2015
NEW YORK, Sept. 30, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Music proudly announces the release of HE NAMED ME MALALA (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack). The original score for the film was written by multiple Grammy® winner and Academy Award® nominee, Thomas Newman. The soundtrack is available now digitally and on CD October 30. HE NAMED ME MALALA opens in select theaters in New York and Los Angeles on October 2 and nationwide October 9.
Academy Award® winning director, Davis Guggenheim says of Thomas Newman's score:
"Watching Tom in his studio was pure artistry. His music brought the film to life pulling the characters' emotional inner lives to the surface, threading and bonding the story together and allowing it to be fully realized."
HE NAMED ME MALALA is an intimate portrait of Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Malala Yousafzai, who was targeted by the Taliban and severely wounded by a gunshot when returning home on her school bus in Pakistan's Swat Valley. The then 15-year-old (she turned 18 this July) was singled out, along with her father, for advocating for girls' education, and the attack on her sparked an outcry from supporters around the world. She miraculously survived and is now a leading campaigner for girls' education globally as co-founder of the Malala Fund.
Acclaimed Academy Award®-winning documentary filmmaker Davis Guggenheim (An Inconvenient Truth, Waiting for Superman) shows us how Malala, her father Zia and her family are committed to fighting for education for all girls worldwide. The film gives us an inside glimpse into this extraordinary young girl's life – from her close relationship with her father who inspired her love for education, to her impassioned speeches at the UN, to her everyday life with her parents and brothers.
Thomas Newman is one of the most respected and recognized composers in film today. With an illustrious career of over 30 years, Newman has scored more than 70 feature films. Coming from a prominent musical dynasty – his father was the renowned composer Alfred Newman, and singer/songwriter/composer Randy Newman is his cousin – he has been nominated for twelve Academy Awards® and has won an Emmy Award®, two BAFTA Awards and six Grammy Awards®. Newman has composed the scores for many other notable films, including American Beauty, Skyfall, Erin Brockovich, The Good German, Finding Nemo and Wall-E for Pixar as well as The Horse Whisperer, The Help and The Iron Lady.

Music composed and conducted by Academy Award® nominee Alan Silvestri
Sep 29, 2015
NEW YORK, Sept. 29, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Classical and Madison Gate Records proudly announce the release of THE WALK Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. Featuring music from the score composed by Academy Award® nominee Alan Silvestri, THE WALK Original Motion Picture Soundtrack is available on CD October 2. The film will be released nationwide on October 9.
Silvestri has collaborated on 15 films with Robert Zemeckis and comments about the director, "Only Robert Zemeckis could find a way to allow us all to stand alongside Philippe Petit as he faced unspeakable fear and doubt while daring to accomplish the impossible."
Twelve people have walked on the moon. Only one has ever, or will ever, walk in the immense void between the World Trade Center towers. Philippe Petit (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), guided by his real-life mentor, Papa Rudy (Ben Kingsley), is aided by an unlikely band of international recruits, who overcome long odds, betrayals, dissension and countless close calls to conceive and execute their mad plan. Robert Zemeckis, the master director of such marvels as Forrest Gump, Cast Away, Back to the Future, Polar Express and Flight, again uses cutting edge technology in the service of an emotional, character-driven story. With innovative photorealistic techniques and IMAX® 3D wizardry, The Walk is genuine big-screen cinema, a chance for moviegoers to viscerally experience the feeling of reaching the clouds.
It is also one of the rare live-action films that is a PG-rated, all-audience entertainment for moviegoers 8 to 80 – and a triumphant true story to boot. It is unlike anything audiences have seen before, a love letter to Paris and New York City in the 1970s, but most of all, to the towers of the World Trade Center. Directed by Robert Zemeckis. Produced by Steve Starkey, Robert Zemeckis, and Jack Rapke. The Screenplay is by Robert Zemeckis & Christopher Browne, based on the book "To Reach the Clouds" by Philippe Petit.
Composer Alan Silvestri has scored some of the most iconically revered and profitable films in Hollywood history, amassing over a hundred credits to the tune of two Oscar® and Golden Globe nominations, two Emmy Awards, and three Grammy Awards. While stylistically diverse, the unifying voice of Silvestri's work is an unmistakable rhythmic melody whose themes continue to embody movie excitement and drama for generations of moviegoers. Silvestri has scored well over 100 films of every imaginable style and genre. His energy and experimentation has brought excitement and emotion to the scores. The Walk is a new production of the decades long collaboration between Silvestri and filmmaker Robert Zemeckis. No film defines their creative relationship better than Zemeckis' 1994 Best Picture winner, "Forrest Gump," for which Silvestri's gift for melodically beautiful themes earned him an Oscar® nomination and the affection of film music lovers everywhere.

A new 4-CD collection featuring 100 rare Sinatra tracks including 91 previously unreleased live performances - recorded during the 'Golden Age' of radio!
Available Friday, November 20th
Sep 29, 2015
NEW YORK, Sept. 29, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- In a matter befitting the 100th birthday of an American icon, Sony Music's Legacy Recordings announces the November 20th, 2015 release of Frank Sinatra: A Voice on Air (1935-1955), a historic 100+ track, 4-CD deluxe box set culled from an invaluable collection of rare radio broadcasts and rehearsals – immaculately restored from the original recording masters for unprecedented high-fidelity sound. The set is available for pre-order on Amazon here: http://smarturl.it/Sinatra_AVOA_amazon
Luxuriously packaged with a 60-page book, Frank Sinatra: A Voice on Air (1935-1955) is an essential addition to Sinatra's voluminous discography, offering a unique glimpse into the formative period of America's first teen idol: Frank Sinatra, the man who became known the world over as "The Voice." Included in the book are an introductory essay by renowned singer, pianist and archivist Michael Feinstein; a personal remembrance by Frank's eldest daughter Nancy Sinatra and detailed essay by foremost Sinatra historian, author and box set producer Charles L. Granata. The package was designed by noted Art Director Maria Marulanda, who created the landmark 2007 Columbia/Legacy box set Frank Sinatra: A Voice in Time.
In assembling this groundbreaking box set marking the first official release anthologizing Frank Sinatra's seminal radio performances, the producers have mined treasures from their own extensive Sinatra broadcast transcription collections and the world's most prestigious archives and sound recording repositories including The Library of Congress, the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center, the Paley Center for Media, the Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook Initiative archive and The University of Colorado's Glenn Miller Archive. Included are dozens of rare photographs and recording artifacts that help to illustrate the scope of Sinatra's incredible radio career.
Meticulously restored and remastered in high-resolution from the original glass and aluminum radio transcription discs and magnetic tape masters by three-time Grammy winning recording engineer Andreas Meyer and Sinatra producer Charles L. Granata, these vintage, historic recordings – most of them unheard since their original broadcast in the 1940s and 1950s – sound more rich and vibrant than ever before. All of the warmth and vibrancy that are hallmarks of Frank Sinatra's vocal brilliance have been preserved, and showcased with unprecedented fidelity.
This breathtaking overview charts Frank Sinatra's evolution as a vocalist, and includes samples of his radio work from the first twenty years of his amazing career, from his first radio performance in 1935 (singing "S-H-I-N-E" with the Hoboken Four) to his last weekly series in 1955 (The Frank Sinatra Show, featuring ultra-rare performances with an in-studio quintet). From beginning to end, Frank Sinatra: A Voice on Air (1935-1955) envelops the listener in the atmosphere surrounding the creation of these masterful radio performances in the 1930s, '40s and '50s.
This box set holds special significance – both in Frank Sinatra's body of work, and as a special 100th Birthday tribute – as it includes dozens of songs that were never officially recorded by Frank Sinatra, and dozens of unusual (and unrecorded) arrangements of Sinatra's most prized songs. Among the treasures included on the collection are Cole Porter's "Don't Fence Me In," Frank Loesser's "I Wish I Didn't Love You So," Jerome Kern and Ira Gershwin's "Long Ago and Far Away," Johnny Burke and Jimmy Van Heusen's "Aren't You Glad You're You" and Richard Whiting, Leo Robin and Newell Chase's "My Ideal" – all important classics from the Great American Songbook that Sinatra never recorded.
Then, there are priceless duets with Nat 'King' Cole ("Exactly Like You"), Benny Goodman ("I Only Have Eyes for You"), Peggy Lee ("You Brought A New Kind of Love to Me"), Metropolitan Opera star Dorothy Kirsten ("A Fine Romance"), Doris Day ("Take Me Out to the Ballgame" and "There's No Business Like Show Business" and Milton Berle ("It's De-Lovely") – as well as songwriters Irving Berlin ("Alexander's Ragtime Band"), Johnny Mercer ("Ac-Cen-Tchu-Ate the Positive") and Louisiana Governor Jimmy Davis ("You Are My Sunshine"). Also included are seldom-heard program openings, closings, announcements and commercials – PLUS twelve surprise bonus tracks that are sure to delight even the die-hard Sinatra fan!
Frank Sinatra: A Voice on Air (1935-1955) was produced by Charles L. Granata, Didier C. Deutsch, Michael Feinstein and Andreas Meyer in cooperation with Legacy Recordings, Frank Sinatra Enterprises and the Smithsonian Institution. Executive Producers for the project are Nancy Sinatra, Adam Block and John Jackson. Editing, restoration and mastering are by Andreas Meyer and Charles L. Granata.
Befitting the historical importance of these irreplaceable American musical treasures, Sony Music's Legacy Recordings has partnered with The Smithsonian Institution to create a single CD consisting of an additional 26 rare, previously unreleased radio recordings (not available on the box set) to be offered exclusively at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. and through their website. Visit http://www.smithsonianmag.com/sinatra/ for information regarding this companion release.

Lang Lang in Versailles DVD + Blu-ray Out November 13
Sep 29, 2015
NEW YORK, Sept. 29, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Ever since his first visit to the magical space that is the Hall of Mirrors in the Palace of Versailles, Lang Lang had dreamed of performing there. When his dream came to fruition in the form of a special recital on June 22, 2015 he chose Chopin's four momentous Scherzi and Tchaikovsky's rare but masterly cycle The Seasons to present to his audience. A studio recording of the repertoire was made in the Salle Liebermann at the Opera Bastille and the live concert was filmed in 4K in the Hall of Mirrors for release on DVD and Blu-ray.
Lang Lang in Paris will be available on CD, deluxe CD (including booklet and bonus DVD containing video excerpts from the Hall of Mirrors concert), vinyl and digital formats. Lang Lang live in Versailles will be released on DVD and Blu-ray formats.
Tchaikovsky and Chopin have both played a major role in Lang Lang's career to date. When Lang Lang, as a 17-year-old, stood in for an indisposed Andre Watts at a Ravinia concert with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the work he played was Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto.
If Tchaikovsky has appeared at pivotal moments in Lang Lang's career, Chopin has been a constant companion: a recital rarely goes by without music by the Polish master on the program and Lang Lang has already recorded a substantial amount of his music, including the Etudes and the Ballades (which Lang Lang sees as siblings to the Scherzi).
Lang Lang is a committed advocate of Tchaikovsky's The Seasons. As he says, "Even though there are not so many notes compared to more virtuosic pieces, the harmony that Tchaikovsky creates within these notes is incredible. His timeless melodies have a kind of pain that he always turns into beauty. He presents his heart, and he holds your heart."
The recordings followed an extensive international series of concerts and Lang Lang will continue to tour the program worldwide this autumn and next spring.

Press reviews for Lang Lang's Chopin/Tchaikovsky concerts
"The complete set of Chopin four Scherzos could take everything that Lang threw at them – the wild, impressive extroverted flourishes, the melting touch that he applied to the Trio sections, a gorgeous rippling waterfall effect in the third Scherzo, the bombs-away codas." Los Angeles Times
"You don't hear all of Tchaikovsky's The Seasons played as a cycle too often, and Lang made it an experience of contrasts as varied as the weather itself – turning on the hammering drive in 'August' and 'September', ruminating through 'April' and drifting through 'May' with lots of expression." Los Angeles Times

Debut album by the groundbreaking hip-hop group set for 25th Anniversary Release on November 13th
Sep 22, 2015
NEW YORK, Sept. 22, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- A Tribe Called Quest and Sony Legacy have announced a special 25th anniversary edition collection of the group's classic debut album People's Instinctive Travels And The Paths of Rhythm will be released on November 13th. In celebration of the 25th anniversary, the album will be remastered from the original tapes by Grammy-Award winning engineer Bob Power, and re-released with exclusive new remixes by a few of today's biggest hip-hop artists who have credited A Tribe Called Quest as a major creative influence. Remixes will be announced in the coming weeks. This album will mark the debut release in a series of re-releases by A Tribe Called Quest over the course of the next few years. Pre-order the album here: http://smarturl.it/ATCQ_PIT25_AMZN
"I had this album in my head for years before I did it. Looking at it overall, to see the thoughts of a 16 year old gain any kind of acknowledgement makes me feel like I have arrived ... But to see it in this incarnation ... I'm humbled" – Q-Tip
"This album means a lot. It was the beginning of our careers; the beginning of our imprint; the beginning of seeing life the way we saw it, and being able to put it down in words and music." – Ali Shaheed Muhammad
People's Instinctive Travels And The Paths Of Rhythm made its debut in 1990 and came at a crucial time for hip-hop. The Queens-raised childhood friends -- Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Jarobi White -- took the traditional hip-hop formula and threw it out the window. Like their contemporaries in De La Soul and the Jungle Brothers, all of whom would become known as the Native Tongues collective, their lyrical and musical influences were unlike any hip-hop group on the scene. While many built breaks around vintage soul and funk samples, ATCQ utilized samples of jazz and '70s rock. Their verses were conversational instead of confrontational, addressing socially conscious topics with laid-back candor and slightly off-kilter humor.
Critics and hip-hop audiences understood the sea of change ATCQ represented. The Source gave the album a perfect score of five mics (a first for the publication), while The Village Voice praised it as "upliftingly dope."
A TRIBE CALLED QUEST
Queens, New York natives Q-Tip , Phife Dawg , and Ali Shaheed Muhammad of Brooklyn, formed A Tribe Called Quest in 1985. The group is one of hip-hop's most legendary, beloved and revered groups of all time. Easily recognized for their unique approach to rap music by employing jazz infused soundscapes to Afro centric rhymes, ATCQ was largely responsible for the popularity of a new genre that dominated the East Coast sound of the early 1990s. Sonically, ATCQ was a decisive and welcomed tangent of jazz, bass-heavy rhythmic vibes and eclectic sampling when compared to the mundane recycling of soul loops, breaks and vocals of their contemporaries. Lyrically, emcees Q-Tip and Phife Dawg addressed social issues relevant to young blacks such as use of the n word and its relevance, date rape and other interpersonal relationships, industry politics and consumerism with infectious energy and fun and having a good time while still promoting positivity. ATCQ composed a number of successful singles and albums with their creative approach to rap music. In 1990, the group released People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm. Their sophomore effort, The Low End Theory, considered one of the greatest albums in hip-hop history that would solidify them as legends. In recent years, the anticipation for another ATCQ album has been building. The Abstract Poetic, Five Foot Assasin, and Mr. Muhammad have yet to grace the studio for another record, but have hit the road again. Today, the power of their music is still evident in their dynamic stage shows and in the reception of their adoring fans.

Sep 18, 2015
NEW YORK, Sept. 18, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Capping a week of rave reviews from Rolling Stone, the L.A. Times, Entertainment Weekly, NPR's First Listen, the N.Y. Daily News (cheering the new album and crowning Darlene Love "part of the pop DNA") and others, one of the most anticipated albums of this or any year – Introducing Darlene Love is available everywhere today, including iTunes, Google Play, and Amazon.
The Columbia Records/Wicked Cool release marks the first new full-length album of original pop songs in 27 years from the renowned vocalist, who has achieved legendary status for her enduring work with Phil Spector and as one of the most prolific backup singers of all time. Now, with the spirited Love deservedly back in center spotlight, the album is being welcomed to worldwide acclaim: "Girl group royal takes back her throne," heralded Rolling Stone, "Love comes at it like a wrecking ball, husky alto thrillingly intact..."; "A stunning collection of vibrant, dramatic rock anthems and R&B workouts...' wrote Entertainment Weekly; "Love singing at maximum intensity..." noted the L.A. Times, with the above-mentioned NY Daily News praising the album as a "'soaring work" and revealing that "Love has lost none of her talents and has never sounded more unsinkable." Electric Review proclaims, "if you're too young to have experienced first-hand the excitement that came with hearing a new Darlene Love song ache through the jukebox or car radio, Introducing Darlene Love will cast you back to a place of innocence and faith, shepherding you back to a time when people gathered in the misty fields, steadfastly holding to the belief that music was about to change the world." Produced and arranged by artist/producer/E Street Band great Stevie Van Zandt, it's more than apparent that his heartfelt mission of re-introducing the irrepressible Love to the world in all her vocal splendor has been affirmed as a rousing success.
Hailed as "a splashy victory lap" by NPR's First Listen, the album is comprised of all new recordings and features never-before-heard and classic songs from a superstar cast of songwriters eager to join Van Zandt in honoring one of the seminal voices in music history. The Elvis Costello-penned first single "Forbidden Nights" has also been embraced at radio and drawn raves, with Costello and Bruce Springsteen contributing two tracks each to the 14-song album (released on Van Zandt's Wicked Cool label in partnership with Columbia Records - see full tracklist below) with Stevie Van Zandt penning three songs. Other writers include Jim Webb, Linda Perry, Desmond Child, Joan Jett, longtime songwriting team Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, and Michael Des Barres, and more. Various before mentioned songs have been championed across several channels at SiriusXM Radio with feature interviews running throughout release week. NPR's First Listen also praised the Van Zandt/Love chemistry on the album, citing the "dignity in Love's vocals amplified by Van Zandt's grand but well-modulated arrangements."
The irresistible video for the first single "Forbidden Nights" also premiered to an overwhelming response. The jubilant clip catches the charismatic Love and pals cruising the beach sites of Asbury Park, N.J., and features inventive cameos including Costello himself, as well as Joan Jett, Paul Schaffer, Bill Murray, David Letterman, and hilarious glimpses of Van Zandt and buddy Bruce Springsteen. Love and Van Zandt and a stage-full of musicians also rocked Asbury Park's Paramount Theatre live on September 12, reveling in a vibrant set of album selections kicking off Introducing Darlene Love's release as well as delivering torrid renditions of some of her back-classics. Two more buzzed-about shows celebrating the album's release are on deck in L.A.'s famed Whisky A Go Go with the first show kicking off tonight. Headliner Love and Little Steven & Friends will be rocking the bill September 18 and 20.
The captivating Love is sure to bring her iconic vocal rendering to the Whisky just as she does on the acclaimed new album. Songs on Introducing Darlene Love include "Night Closing In" (Bruce Springsteen,) "Still To Soon To Know" (Elvis Costello),"Love Kept Us Foolin' Around" (Linda Perry), "Who Under Heaven" (Jimmy Webb), "River Deep, Mountain High" (Phil Spector/Jeff Barry/Ellie Greenwich), and "Sweet Freedom" (Barry Man/Cynthia Weil), among others.
Inducted in to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2011, Love's five-decade career spans some of the greatest signature moments in music. The Los Angeles native (Love currently resides in New Jersey) nurtured her talent early as a member of the Blossoms, a local trio who began their career providing backup vocals for artists such as Sam Cooke and Bobbie Day. The Blossoms also were featured as part of the house band for the popular '60s music show Shindig, backing up many of the performers who appeared on the series. Love would go on to become one of the most sought-after singers in music history, recording with Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, The Beach Boys, Dionne Warwick, The Righteous Brothers, Tom Jones, and dozens of other vocal giants throughout her career. Her early work with pioneering producer Phil Spector on songs such as the trailblazing "He's A Rebel," "He's Sure The Boy I Love," and "Why Do Lover's Break Each Other's Hearts," would garner her legend status. She is featured in the 2013 Academy Award and Grammy winning documentary '20 Feet From Stardom,' chronicling the behind-the-scenes lives of background singers. Darlene's annual holiday performance of her classic "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" on Late Night With David Letterman became a holiday viewing staple.

Bennett's New Album for RPM/Columbia Records Available Everywhere on Friday, September 25, 2015
Aug 21, 2015
NEW YORK, Aug. 21, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- RPM/Columbia Records is proud to announce the release of The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern, a new album from American musical legend Tony Bennett and acclaimed jazz pianist Bill Charlap, arriving Friday, September 25, 2015. The album is available for pre-order beginning today at Amazon.com at http://smarturl.it/silverlining_amazon and iTunes at http://smarturl.it/silverlining_itunes.
Following the enormous success of his #1, Grammy-Award winning album with Lady Gaga, Cheek To Cheek, this new release continues the classic series of Tony Bennett album releases celebrating the essentials of the Great American Songbook. The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern is an appreciation of the genius of Jerome David Kern (1885-1945), one of the 20th century's most important American composers of musical theater and popular music.
Tony Bennett is the only artist to successfully bridge the worlds of pop music and jazz on an international scale for over 60 years. The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern become parts of a timeless legacy of recordings that Bennett has done throughout his career that have embraced both genres, in particular the revered piano jazz albums that he recorded with the late Bill Evans in 1975 and 1977. Tony has become synonymous with the pop/jazz connection and in recent years has been a mentor to contemporary artists such as Lady Gaga and the late Amy Winehouse in encouraging them to embrace jazz music. With his 90th birthday less than a year away, The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern defines what makes Tony Bennett unique in the pantheon of great singers and is a testament to the legacy that he continues to create as a recording artist and influence in the music industry.
Over the course of his career, Kern composed more than 700 songs, creating musical elements used in more than 100 stage works, collaborating with the greatest lyricists and librettists of the era including P.G. Wodehouse, Oscar Hammerstein II, Dorothy Fields, Johnny Mercer, Ira Gershwin, E.Y. Harburg and many others on a seemingly limitless repertoire of classic songs including "Ol' Man River," "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man," "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," "The Way You Look Tonight," "Long Ago and Far Away" and many more.
New York native Jerome Kern was a major force on Broadway and in Hollywood musicals in a career that spanned more than four decades. He expanded on earlier musical theater traditions, from vaudeville to operetta, to embrace new dance rhythms, syncopation and jazz progressions and helped invent the modern musical template. While many of his Broadway musicals and Hollywood musical films were contemporary smash hits, Kern is perhaps best remembered today through revivals of "Show Boat," one of his signature achievements.
In his liner notes for The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern, music historian Will Friedwald describes Kern as "...the key link between the great music of historical and contemporary classics, a direct connection between Brahms and Charlie Parker....a key architect of a uniquely American art form that would eventually take shape as musical theater....one of the founding fathers of a term that Tony Bennett later coined himself, 'the Great American Songbook.'" Friedwald writes about music and popular culture for The Wall Street Journal, worked with Tony Bennett on Tony's "The Good Life" memoir, and is author of eight books including the award-winning "A Biographical Guide to the Great Jazz and Pop Singers," "Sinatra! The Song Is You," "Stardust Melodies," and "Jazz Singing."
"The idea of a Kern Songbook project was Tony's," writes Will Friedwald, "thereby placing Kern on the very short list of canonical composers (Rodgers & Hart, Harold Arlen, Duke Ellington, Irving Berlin, and Cy Coleman) who have been the beneficiaries of an entire album by Bennett. It was also Bennett's idea to create the album in collaboration with the remarkable Bill Charlap....who can also take a great song we all know by heart and make us feel like we've never heard it before."
Playing alongside Tony Bennett and Bill Charlap on The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern are pianist Renee Rosnes (on the piano duet pieces), Peter Washington (bass) and Kenny Washington (drums). Unrelated, though sharing the same last name, Peter and Kenny have been performing with Bill Charlap for nearly two decades and pianist Renee Rosnes has been Charlap's life partner for close to 10 years.
With more than 700 Jerome Kern compositions to choose from, the set list for The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern is a distillation of essential highlights from a boundless catalog. With these interpretations of some of Jerome Kern's finest songs, Tony Bennett and Bill Charlap offer a definitive introduction to Kern's music while providing a deep understanding of the abiding and universal qualities of these songs.

ABOUT TONY BENNETT:
Tony Bennett is an artist who moves the hearts and touches the souls of audiences. He's not just the singer's singer but also an international treasure honored by the United Nations with its Citizen of the World award, which aptly describes the scope of his accomplishments.
The son of a grocer and Italian-born immigrant, Anthony Dominick Benedetto was born on August 3, 1926, in the Astoria section of Queens, New York. He attended the High School of Industrial Arts in Manhattan, where he nurtured his dual passions, singing and painting. His boyhood idols Bing Crosby and Nat King Cole were big influences on Bennett's easy, natural singing style. Tony sang while waiting tables as a teenager then performed with military bands throughout his overseas Army duty during World War II. After the war, the GI Bill enabled him to study vocal technique at the American Theatre Wing School.
With worldwide record sales in the millions, Tony has received eighteen Grammy Awards including the prestigious Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. The MTV generation took to Tony Bennett during his appearance with the Red Hot Chili Peppers on the 1993 MTV Video Awards. He appeared on MTV Unplugged and the recording of the same name earned him the Grammy Award for Album of the Year. "Tony Bennett has not just bridged the generation gap," observed The New York Times, "he has demolished it. He has connected with a younger crowd weaned on rock. And there have been no compromises."
His initial fame came via a string of Columbia singles in the early 1950s, including such chart-toppers as "Because of You," "Rags To Riches" and a cover of Hank Williams' "Cold, Cold Heart." He has placed two-dozen songs in the Top 40, including "I Wanna Be Around," "The Good Life," "Who Can I Turn To (When Nobody Needs Me)" and his signature hit, "I Left My Heart In San Francisco." One of only a few artists to have albums chart in the 1950s, '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, and the new millennium, he's introduced multitudes of songs into the Great American Songbook that have become pop music standards. Upon the release of his boxed set collection, TONY BENNETT: THE COMPLETE COLLECTION, the New York Times commented, "we aren't likely to see a recording career like this again." Bennett made music history when he became the oldest artist at the age of 86 to achieve a #1 record on the Billboard charts with his DUETS II CD. He broke that record at the age of 88 when his collaborative album with Lady Gaga, CHEEK TO CHEEK, debuted at #1 on the Billboard Album charts. The album went on to win a Grammy Award and fostered a sold-out and critically acclaim world-wide concert tour. Tony Bennett is a Kennedy Center Honoree and an NEA Jazz Master, and a 18-time Grammy Winner. Tony has authored four books, his official biography, two books devoted to his artwork, and the latest New York Times Bestseller, Life Is A Gift.
Tony is a dedicated painter whose interest in art began as a child. He continues to paint daily, even while touring. He has exhibited work around the world, and three of his original paintings are part of the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC.
Throughout his career, Tony Bennett has always put his heart and time into humanitarian concerns. He's raised millions for the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. His original paintings each year grace the cover of the American Cancer Society's holiday greeting card. He received Martin Luther King Center's "Salute to Greatness Award" for his efforts to fight discrimination, having marched with Dr. Martin Luther King in 1965. The United Nations presented him with their 2007 Humanitarian Award.
In honor of his great friend and staunchest supporter, Tony established the Frank Sinatra School for the Arts, which opened as a New York City public high school, offering an extensive arts curriculum, in September of 2001. In 2009, a permanent site for the school opened in Bennett's hometown of Astoria, Queens. With his wife Susan, they founded Exploring the Arts, which supports the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts and provides support to arts education in public schools.

Elvis Costello and Bruce Springsteen contribute two tracks each to the 14-song album (released on Van Zandt's Wicked Cool label in partnership with Columbia Records - see full tracklist below) with Stevie Van Zandt penning three songs. Other writers include Jim Webb, Linda Perry, Desmond Child, Joan Jett, longtime songwriting team Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, and Michael Des Barres, and more.
The captivating Love brings her iconic vocal delivery to each song, including "Night Closing In" (Bruce Springsteen,) "Still To Soon To Know" (Elvis Costello),"Love Kept Us Foolin' Around" (Linda Perry), "Who Under Heaven" (Jimmy Webb), "River Deep, Mountain High" (Phil Spector/Jeff Barry/Ellie Greenwich), and "Sweet Freedom" (Barry Man/Cynthia Weil), among others. Love's five-decade career spans some of the greatest signature moments in music, with the Los Angeles native nurturing her talent early as a member of the Blossoms, a local trio who began their career providing backup vocals for artists such as Sam Cooke and Bobbie Day.

CEREMONY SET FOR DECEMBER 10 AT UNITED NATIONS HEAD OFFICE IN NEW YORK
Dec 8, 2014
NEW YORK, Dec. 8, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- In recognition of his artistic contributions and political activism, Guitarist Edgey Pires of The Last Internationale will be honored at the 2014 PORTUGUESE-BRAZILIAN AWARDS. The artist receives this esteemed honor amongst a total of 20 Portuguese and Brazilian actors, cultural influencers, journalists, and other trailblazers. The gala ceremony takes place at the United Nations head office in New York City on December 10, 2014.
Edgey graduated from college with a degree in Political Science and went on to write two books, Fighting for Freedom: Because A Better World is Possible (Planting Seeds Press) and Negative Dialectics: How to Accurately Interpret the World (unpublished). This marks a significant milestone for both Edgey and the critically acclaimed New York band.
"The UN is where Che Guevara delivered an incendiary speech against US imperialism. It is where Hugo Chaves, decades later, gave a similar speech in which he condemned 'the devil', George W. Bush, who had spoken from the same podium the day before. It is where KRS ONE went to get Hip Hop officially recognized as an international culture. It is where the Security Council vote on which poor, innocent people in remote parts of the world will get bombs dropped on their heads. It is outside of this building that I have held many banners and shouted for human rights and seen many of my fellow Comrades get tear-gassed, pepper-sprayed, beat and dragged off by police," said Edgey. "So when I found out that I was being given the Luso-Brazilian Award at the UN for my artistic achievements and social activism, I was as much shocked as I was honored to be included on the right side of this contentious history. Since the event falls on Human Rights Day, I will also be standing outside (once again) demanding that we get some human rights right here at home. I urge everyone from around the world to head out into the streets and fight for a different world."
During the evening, the PORTUGUESE-BRAZILIAN AWARDS bestows a statue and a diploma upon all honorees. The event aims to bolster and encourage Portuguese and Brazilian communities in the U.S. through recognizing the culture's luminaries and their respective contributions.
This news concludes a monumental year for The Last Internationale. They recently unveiled their star-studded music video for "A Wanted Man" and performed a powerful "Call For Action" show regarding Prop 47 in South Los Angeles. They are now gearing up to launch a campaign around the rising Student Debt Crisis. The band is passionate about this issue and is planning a more formal announcement early next year.
The Last Internationale first emerged in 2013 with their independent EP, New York, 'I Do Mind Dying. Legendary Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello made an introduction between Delila Paz and Edgy Pires and his longtime bandmate Brad Wilk. The drummer ended up joining the group, and they unleashed We Will Reign this past summer. They've performed on The Late Show with David Letterman and recently supported Robert Plant on tour.
