Apr 01, 2015 | Sony Classical To Release Far from the Madding Crowd Soundtrack

MUSIC COMPOSED BY CRAIG ARMSTRONG

Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Available April 28, 2015

Apr 1, 2015

NEW YORK, April 1, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- After his Academy Award® nominated film The Hunt (starring Mads Mikkelsen), Danish director Thomas Vinterberg adapted Thomas Hardy's classic love story Far from the Madding Crowd for the big screen. Grammy award-winning composer Craig Armstrong was enlisted to compose the score for the film. On April 28, Sony Classical will release the original motion picture soundtrack recording of Far from the Madding Crowd.

In this eagerly awaited drama, Vinterberg has brought together a first class cast, including Academy Award nominee Carey Mulligan (Never Let Me Go, An Education, Drive), Golden Globe® nominee Michael Sheen (Kingdom of Heaven, Midnight in Paris, Frost/Nixon), Matthias Schoenaerts (Rust and Bone, Bullhead) and Tom Sturridge (On The Road). The film will be in theaters on May 1, 2015.

Far from the Madding Crowd tells the story of independent and headstrong Bathsheba Everdene (Carey Mulligan), who attracts three very different suitors: Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts), a sheep farmer, captivated by her fetching willfulness; Frank Troy (Tom Sturridge), a handsome and reckless Sergeant; and William Boldwood (Michael Sheen), a prosperous and mature bachelor. This timeless story of Bathsheba's choices and passions explores the nature of relationships and love - as well as the human ability to overcome hardships through resilience and perseverance.

Craig Armstrong's score for Far from the Madding Crowd is as powerful as divertingly delightful. With warm strings and graceful orchestration, Armstrong showcases his finesse for strong, romantic themes and heartbreakingly beautiful composition. Featuring traditional British ballads, Far from the Madding Crowd is a diversified album which masterfully touches on human issues involving tradition, temptation, passion and love.

Armstrong is one of the most popular composers and arrangers in the film and music industry. Thanks to his emotionally charged and distinctive style, the Scottish composer has received rave reviews for scores for Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge! (for which he was awarded a Golden Globe) and The Great Gatsby, Ray, Love, Actually, World Trade Center and Elizabeth: The Golden Age. For the biopic Ray, Craig Armstrong won a Grammy® Award for Best Original Score in 2004.

Sony Music Masterworks comprises Masterworks, Sony Classical, OKeh, Portrait, Masterworks Broadway and Flying Buddha imprints. For email updates and information please visit www.SonyMasterworks.com.

Mar 30, 2015 | Producer Henrik Schwarz Releases New Album Instruments Available April 14, 2015

Featuring Acoustic Chamber Music Arrangements Of His Electronic Dance Music Hits

Mar 30, 2015

NEW YORK, March 30, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- "What's left of my music if I have it played by classical musicians and omit the most important element, the beats?"  This question was the starting point for Instruments, the new album from Henrik Schwarz, the internationally celebrated producer, composer and performer of electronic dance music (EDM).  Available April 14 via Sony Classical, the album features six acoustic chamber music arrangements of his electronic dance hits, plus an original composition.

Four years have passed now since the Berlin musician and producer was first invited to have a selection of his house tracks played by an orchestra. Now, the Tokyo Secret Orchestra has recorded seven pieces arranged for chamber orchestra that are reminiscent of the minimalism of Steve Reich and Michael Nyman.

The last ten years have seen quite a few classical performances of electronic club music. Many of these were in the "classic rock" tradition of the 1970's, when symphony orchestras played the pop hits of the day. "In most cases, electronic beats were then mixed into the orchestral arrangements, but I always found that a bit half-hearted," says Schwarz. He wasn't interested in so-called crossover; what interested him was what happens when club music is transferred to a body of classical instruments. "I wanted to see whether this music still means anything when you take away all the synthetic sounds and the beats." This prompted Schwarz to experiment with the scores, working together with arranger Johannes Brecht and various ensembles, without any computer sounds or acoustic percussion instruments that supply a rhythm in 4/4 time.

For more than a decade, Henrik Schwarz, 42, has been one of the best-respected house producers and a sought-after remixer working with artists like Steve Wonder, Mary J. Blige, Ane Brun and Coldplay. In recent years, Schwarz has worked on a number of cross-genre projects: writing the music for a silent film, working with the Berlin State Ballet and painter Norbert Bisky, recording with leading jazzmen Bugge Wesseltoft and Dan Berglund, and performing concerts with pianist Nik Bartsch. In addition, the arrangements on Instruments have been performed by different orchestras in some of Europe's best-known concert venues, such as Berlin's Kammermusiksaal, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw or the Tonhalle in Zurich.

The breakthrough came for Schwarz personally with a performance by 27 young Japanese musicians under conductor Emi Akiyama: they appeared in a Buddhist temple in 2013 under the name Tokyo Secret Orchestra. "Suddenly I heard my own music with different ears. Classical music makes completely different demands on the players from a house track. In house music it's the precision timing that creates the groove, but an orchestra is not used to playing like a machine. However, in Tokyo, I had the feeling that the musicians managed to penetrate to the music's core."

The recordings made in Japan supplied the source material for Instruments. Included are acoustic chamber music arrangements of Schwarz's EDM hits like the 2006 remix of "Wamims" and "Walk Music," which he has used as an opener for his live sets, plus one new composition "In Bjorndal."

All the pieces have been arranged for a complete body of strings (violins, violas, cellos and double bass). The strings are joined by low woodwind (bass flute, bass clarinet and bassoon), which not only supply individual timbres, but are also a source of rhythm like a vibraphone, a percussion instrument that is also a part of the new arrangements. In this context, the focus is on the magic and the magnetic power of minimalism, something that American composer Steve Reich used to influence the pop and techno scene with his cleverly interlocking rhythmic chains.

Right at the outset of "Walk Music," there is a magical combination of single, lyrical notes from the strings and mysterious vibraphone figures in the background. The following track, "Marvin," literally sprouts from a single note that is constantly repeated. Here, the bass flute, the viola and the cello evolve a rhythmic energy whose slightly burlesque tone is initially reminiscent of the neo-classicism of Stravinsky – at least until the orchestra strikes up a groove in several parts.

Nor is this by any means the only reference to the great classical masters: inconspicuous reminiscences of this kind are cunningly sprinkled in at liberty. The piece "In Bjorndal" radiates a curious and seductive melancholy magic that could almost be a tribute to Arnold Schonberg and his prismatic style. For "Leave My Head Alone Brain Seven," arranger Johannes Brecht added to the ensemble a bassett horn, a member of the clarinet family that Mozart was particularly fond of. In "I Exist Because Of You" the cello sometimes plays the so-called 'Bartok pizzicati' that go back to the Hungarian composer: the cellist twangs the string and then lets it spring back against the fingerboard.

The harmonies and sounds of the original tracks are played here by the strings and also a number of woodwind instruments, among which the bass clarinet has the starring role. Time and time again, production techniques from electronic music such as loops or low-cuts are transformed into orchestral arrangements, with frequencies being muffled over the space of several bars (e.g. in "Leave My Head Alone Brain Seven"). The result is a new kind of music played on classical instruments. A music that doesn't deny its roots in the club world and could only be created on the computer; a music that manages to transport the energy of electronic dance music to the classical concert hall – with the bass drum only present in the listener's head.

Mar 25, 2015 | Bach to Moog Album Available May 4, 2015 - A Realization for Electronics and Synthesizer

Produced, Arranged and Conducted by Craig Leon

Craig Leon - Moog Synthesizer; Jennifer Pike - Violin Solo; Sinfonietta Cracovia

Live Dates to be Announced Shortly

Mar 25, 2015

NEW YORK, March 25, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- In January 2015, Moog Music, the 60-year-old analogue synthesizer company, announced that for the first time in more than 30 years, it would once again build the large format modular synthesizers that were first introduced by its founder, Dr. Robert Moog in 1964. 2015 also marks the 10th anniversary of the passing of Dr. Robert 'Bob' Moog (1934-2005), inventor of the Moog synthesizer.

To mark these anniversaries, Sony Classical is releasing Bach to Moog on May 4th. The new album showcases the reissued Moog Modular Synthesizer as well as the modern generation of Moog synthesizers and presents the glorious works of Johann Sebastian Bach in a compelling and contemporary way. Bach to Moog is produced by American-born composer, arranger and record producer Craig Leon, famous for his work with The Ramones and Blondie, as well as his work in the classical arena with such leading artists as Luciano Pavarotti, Joshua Bell and Sir James Galway. Leon is also celebrated for his seminal synthesizer albums from the 1970s, Nommos and Anthology of Interplanetary Folk Music Vol. 1 which were rereleased in 2014 to great acclaim and to a new generation of electronic music fans. On Bach to Moog, Leon blends his love and mastery of classical music, electronic music and synthesizers and is joined by acclaimed British classical violinist, Jennifer Pike (the youngest ever winner of the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition) alongside the Sinfonietta Cracovia.

In 1968, the album Switched On Bach inspired many musicians of the time to explore the wondrous new world of synthesized music making. This ground-breaking album was the first to ever take standard classical repertoire and interpret it solely on a device which generated new sounds electronically. Although there had been research and sonic experiments conducted earlier, it was namely after this breakthrough release that the synthesizer entered the mainstream of modern experimental and pop music recording.

As a welcome extension to the synthesized exploration of Bach's music and the many creative opportunities that opened up 50 years ago, the Bach to Moog album integrates the Moog modular synthesizer into the orchestra as a solo instrument, in ensemble and also as a processor of other instruments. Excitingly, this is also the first album to be recorded utilizing the newly re-issued Moog System 55 Modular Synthesizer, which duplicates and modernizes the iconic Moog modular synthesizers of the 1970s and in the album adds the modular synthesizer to the palette of a modern classical orchestra.

Available individually for RSD 2015, newly remastered 12" vinyl editions of the first seven albums recorded and released by Bruce Springsteen for Columbia Records between 1973 and 1984. Recently transferred from the original analogue masters and remastered for release by Bob Ludwig, working with Springsteen and longtime engineer Toby Scott, these essential Springsteen album titles include: Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J. (1973), The Wild, The Innocent and The E Street Shuffle (1973), Born To Run (1975), Darkness On The Edge Of Town (1978), The River (1980), Nebraska (1982) and Born In The U.S.A. (1984).

Cassandra Wilson - "You Go To My Head" c/w "The Mood That I'm In" - 10" Vinyl
Recently signed with Legacy Recordings, Grammy-winning American jazz artist Cassandra Wilson honors the legendary Billie Holiday on the 100th anniversary of the singer's birth (April 7, 1915).  Side A showcases Cassandra's sublime interpretations of these two songs closely associated with Lady Day while Side B features the beautiful originals performed by Billie Holiday.  "You Got To My Head" appears on Coming Forth By Day, Wilson's debut Legacy album, a musical homage to Billie Holiday, produced by Nick Launay (Nick Cave, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and others).  Cassandra's version of "The Mood I'm In" is available exclusively on this RSD collectible 10".

Citizen Dick – "Touch Me I'm Dick" - 7" Vinyl with etched B Side
This 7" vinyl version of "Touch Me, I'm Dick" is the signature single from Citizen Dick - the fictional grunge-rock band featuring members of Pearl Jam - from the 1992 Seattle-centric Cameron Crowe film Singles. The collectible "Touch Me, I'm Dick" single includes, on its B side, an etching of a quote regarding the meaning of the song's title from Citizen Dick frontman "Cliff Poncier," played by Matt Dillon in the film.

Jimi Hendrix – "Purple Haze" c/w "Freedom" – 7" Vinyl
This double A side single--mixed by Jimi Hendrix's long-term sound engineer Eddie Kramer--features two electrifying tracks recorded live at the Atlanta Pop Festival at Middle Georgia Raceway in Byron, Georgia, on July 4, 1970 before the largest US audience (estimated between 300,000 - 400,000) of the guitarist's career.  This RSD 2015 release is an incredible sonic document from Hendrix's Cry of Love tour.

Johnny Cash - Koncert V Praze (In Prague- Live) – 12" Red Translucent 180 Gram Vinyl
Johnny Cash, America's legendary Man in Black, playing his greatest hits and personal favorite songs behind the Iron Curtain Czechoslovakia in 1978.  This limited edition heavyweight 12" LP is pressed on 180 gram Soviet Red vinyl to commemorate this historic performance.

Manic Street Preachers - The Holy Bible 20 – 12" Vinyl Picture Disc
Originally released on Epic Records in 1994, The Holy Bible has proved pivotal in the evolution of Manic Street Preachers and the alternative rock music landscape connecting the 20th and 21st centuries.  In celebration of the 20th anniversary of this classic album, The Holy Bible 20 has been pressed on a 12" vinyl picture disc exclusively for Record Store Day and is being released to coincide with the eagerly-awaited Manic Street Preachers North American Tour, which kicks off on April 20 at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC.

Simon & Garfunkel - "Homeward Bound"/"Leaves That Are Green" - 7" Vinyl
This collectible 7" 45rpm vinyl releases recreates the original 1966 "Homeward Bound" single, pairing two essential Simon & Garfunkel cuts from that year: "Homeward Bound" (from Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme) and "Leaves That Are Green" (from Sounds of Silence).   A Top 5 single in the US, "Homeward Bound" became a worldwide phenomenon reaching #4 in the Netherlands and #9 in the UK while going Top 20 in Australia and Sweden (where it hit #12).  The cover for this RSD 2015 release is based on the German single artwork.

Various Artists - The Wrestling Album/Piledriver: The Wrestling Album 2 - 12" 2LP Red/Yellow Colored Vinyl
This RSD 2015 release brings The Wrestling Album and Piledriver: The Wrestling Album 2 together as a 2LP collection, in a handsome spiral-bound jacket, celebrating a golden era in American pro wrestling mania.  Originally released by the World Wrestling Federation in 1985, The Wrestling Album features tracks produced by Rick Derringer, David Wolff, Jim Steinman (Bat Out of Hell) and "Mona Flambe" (Cyndi Lauper, who contributes backing vocals on "Real American"); the album is comprised of theme music for wrestlers on the WWF (now the WWE) roster at the time.  The 1987 follow-up, Piledriver: The Wrestling Album 2 showcases vocal performances from the wrestlers themselves, including "Stand Back" by Vince McMahon and "If You Only Knew" by The WWF Superstars.

Mar 10, 2015 | HIATUS KAIYOTE Announces North American Spring Tour & SXSW Shows

New Album - Choose Your Weapon available May 4

Mar 10, 2015

NEW YORK, March 10, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Hiatus Kaiyote announces their North American tour in support of the highly anticipated new album Choose Your Weapon, out May 4th via Flying Buddha/Sony Music Masterworks. The tour kicks off at New York's Gramercy Theatre on release day, and loops through the country including stops at Los Angeles' The Roxy Theater, The Double Door in Chicago and more. The band is also set to debut the new material at SXSW later this month. See the full tour routing and SXSW showcases below. Preorder the album here: http://smarturl.it/HKCYW-iTunes.

The Grammy-nominated four-piece band premiered their new single "Breathing Underwater" via The FADER. "'Breathing Underwater' is homage to the different examples of love and compassion in the world that are beyond the limitation of romance," noted frontwoman Nai Palm. "I used arid imagery to depict this—for example, the Jericho rose (African resurrection plant) can survive dormant without water for over a hundred years. If it rains, it can bloom within minutes showcasing the immense power of nurture. It's also a tribute to my musical hero Stevie Wonder." Listen here: http://www.thefader.com/2015/03/03/breathing-underwater-hiatus-kaiyote

Choose Your Weapon is an 18-track, 70-minute odyssey from the Melbourne, Australia-based band. It takes listeners on a journey through the group's self-created ecosystem, populated with songs each embodying its own mini-cinematic sonic soundscape. The album is the hotly anticipated follow-up to their celebrated 2013 debut album Tawk Tomahawk, which was championed by media and fellow artists including Questlove, Erykah Badu, Pharrell and Prince, among others. Legendary producer/songwriter Salaam Remi handpicked Hiatus Kaiyote as the first signing for his new label Flying Buddha, an imprint of Sony Music Masterworks, and they immediately gave Tawk Tomahawk an official worldwide release in July 2013.

Choose Your Weapon was conceived on stages worldwide, whereas Tawk Tomahawk was born in the studio with musicians who were just getting to know each other as bandmates and newly formed family. Taking this new framework, the band - Nai Palm (vocals/guitar), Paul Bender (bass), Perrin Moss (drums/percussion) and Simon Mavin (keyboards) - honed the songs in the studio, transforming them into exquisite pieces of music, pushing the boundaries of their comfort zone.

Feb 19, 2015 | Sony Music Entertainment and Legacy Recordings Sign Guitarist/Songwriter/Producer Steve Vai to New Multi-Album Deal

First Release Under New Agreement, Stillness In Motion - Vai Live in L.A. Available in 2CD and 2DVD Configurations on April 7, 2015

Feb 19, 2015

NEW YORK, Feb. 19, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Music Entertainment and Legacy Recordings have signed virtuoso guitarist/composer/producer Steve Vai to a new multi-album agreement which includes plans to issue two fresh Vai sets in 2015 beginning with the release of Stillness In Motion - Vai Live in L.A. on April 7, 2015.

Sony Music Entertainment and Legacy Recordings have signed virtuoso guitarist/composer/producer Steve Vai to a new multi-album agreement which includes plans to issue two fresh Vai sets in 2015 beginning with the release of Stillness In Motion - Vai Live in L.A. on April 7, 2015

Vai's first release under the new SONY/Legacy agreement will be Stillness In Motion - Vai Live in L.A., a spectacular performance recorded October 12, 2012 at Club Nokia in Los Angeles. Available in 2CD and 2DVD configurations, Stillness In Motion revisits the 49th concert from Vai's monumental Story of Light World Tour.

Running from 2012 through 2014, The Story of Light World Tour totaled out at 253 engagements (including shows, master classes and concerts with various orchestras) in 52 countries.

In addition to the full Club Nokia performance, the 2DVD configuration of Stillness In Motion includes a bonus disc premiering "The Space Between the Notes (Tour Mischief)," a revelatory video diary comprised of more than three and a half hours of footage, lensed around the world on-stage, off-stage and behind-the-scenes during Vai's epic Story of Light World Tour.

"To say that this tour was a powerful life experience would be like saying the sun is hot," writes Steve Vai in his personal liner notes penned for Stillness In Motion.

Following Stillness In Motion, SONY/Legacy will release an album of new Steve Vai material, marking a significant next chapter in the musician's growing canon.

The new multi-album deal marks an SME homecoming for Vai, who set the gold and platinum standard for rock instrumental music across a series of albums released through Relativity and Epic Records from 1990's game-changing Passion and Warfare (his 2nd album and 1st major label release) through 2007's orchestral Sound Theories, Vol. I & II.

Vai will be hosting his second Vai Academy — the ultimate guitar experience — August 2-6, in beautiful Vail, Colorado, at The Arrabelle at Vail Square.  With the theme All About The Guitar set for this year, attendees will spend four days and nights discovering the intricacies of the guitar while enjoying once-in-a-lifetime clinics, workshops and jams from the likes of Vai and his handpicked guest instructors, including special guests Eric Johnson and Sonny Landreth.  Musicians of all ages and levels are welcome.  For more information, visit:  www.vaiacademy.com.  Closing out the week of Vai Academy, Vai will headline Electric Day at Guitar Town on August 9 in Copper Mountain, Colorado, at The Village at Copper.  The annual festival will also include performances that weekend by Eric Johnson, Robben Ford, Sonny Landreth, John Jorgenson and Andy McKee, among others.  For more information:  www.villageatcopper.com/guitarTown/

About Steve Vai
Steve Vai, age 12, picked up the guitar in 1973 and started taking lessons from Joe Satriani (another future guitar hero) shortly after. He soaked up influences ranging from Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page to Jimi Hendrix and Brian May and by the end of the 1970s, was transcribing guitar parts for Frank Zappa. Feb 18, 2015 | Experience Hendrix L.L.C. And Legacy Recordings To Release You Can't Use My Name: Curtis Knight & The Squires (Featuring Jimi Hendrix) The RSVP/PPX Sessions On March 24

1965-1967 Recordings Showcase Hendrix's Brilliance Just Before His Ascent to Stardom

Feb 18, 2015

NEW YORK, Feb. 18, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Experience Hendrix L.L.C. and Legacy Recordings are releasing You Can't Use My Name: Curtis Knight & The Squires (Featuring Jimi Hendrix) The RSVP/PPX Sessions – the first in a series that presents these recordings in their original context. The specially priced fourteen-track collection, taken from sessions in 1965 and 1966 [plus one July 1967 recording], will be available on CD and 150 gram LP on March 24.

Experience Hendrix L.L.C. and Legacy Recordings are releasing

In the mid 1960s, before launching a solo career that has profoundly influenced and altered the course of popular music, Jimi Hendrix was a little known sideman, working for short periods with a variety of artists including the Isley Brothers, Don Covay, Little Richard, and the Harlem-based R&B combo Curtis Knight & The Squires.

Ed Chalpin was an entrepreneur and record producer who founded PPX International, Inc. in 1960. He had created a lucrative business by recording cover versions of top US hits for foreign record companies, who then overdubbed translated lyrics.  In addition to creating remakes for foreign markets, Chalpin had begun to produce original material at his New York recording facility Studio 76 that he would license to various record labels.   Chalpin auditioned Curtis Knight in 1965 and agreed to manage and produce him.

In October 1965, Knight introduced Jimmy Hendrix to Chalpin. After their initial recording session yielded Knight's "How Would You Feel," Chalpin signed Jimi Hendrix to a notorious three-year recording contract for $1.00 and a 1% royalty. Hendrix had thought he was signing a release as a backing musician, later noting, "I took it as an insure of getting paid for the session…" In 1966, Chalpin licensed two singles from Hendrix's sessions with Curtis Knight to RSVP Records, a New York based independent label owned by Jerry Simon. "How Would You Feel" b/w "Welcome Home" and "Hornet's Nest" b/w "Knock Yourself Out." The latter two instrumentals were composed by Hendrix and stand as the first ever commercial release of his own music. Both of these efforts missed the charts entirely and, as a result, Simon's interest in the group waned and RSVP did not issue a third single.

Hendrix would continue to intermittently perform as a member of Curtis Knight & The Squires in 1966. He had also formed his own group Jimmy James & The Blue Flames in Greenwich Village.  It was there where Animals bassist Chas Chandler spotted Hendrix performing "Hey Joe" at the Cafe Wha?. He offered to take Hendrix to London to record a version of the song and serve as his producer.

In September 1966, Chandler escorted Hendrix from New York to London to make good on his promise. Under his guidance, Hendrix formed the Jimi Hendrix Experience with drummer Mitch Mitchell and bassist Noel Redding. Chandler rushed them into the recording studio, pawning his bass guitar to help fund the group. Chandler's faith was rewarded in December 1966 when "Hey Joe" became a hit in England and soon throughout Europe. "Purple Haze" and "The Wind Cries Mary" followed in quick succession and were even more successful.  In a matter of months, Hendrix had transformed from a struggling, little known sideman to the brightest new star in popular music.

Ed Chalpin had learned of Hendrix's international success via reports in industry trade journals. Beginning in May 1967, Chalpin had begun notifying every company he could identify as doing business with Hendrix that his company PPX had previously signed the guitarist to an exclusive three year contract covering the term between October 1965 and October 1968.

Beginning with December 1967's Get That Feeling, Chalpin began to compile and license albums featuring the master recordings Hendrix had recorded as a sideman to Knight. Get That Feeling was followed by October 1968's Flashing. Hendrix's burgeoning fan base was confused by the lack of liner notes or accurate cover imagery [Get That Feeling featured a photograph of Hendrix performing at the Monterey Pop Festival] as these albums gave full artist billing to Jimi Hendrix.

Jimi Hendrix was hamstrung throughout his career by litigation over these recordings in the US and UK and these fights continued until his family ultimately prevailed in litigation against Ed Chalpin and PPX in 2003. Experience Hendrix has since acquired all of the recordings controlled by Chalpin and PPX and this compilation stands as their first attempt to present this music in its original context.

You Can't Use My Name kicks off with "How Would You Feel," a 1966 single based in part on Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone." "How Would You Feel" tackles sensitive race issues, pre-dating by a few years the explosion of popular R&B acts latching onto the thriving Black Power movement. Its b-side "Welcome Home" is also featured on the collection. These tracks represent a musical touchstone, as Hendrix (listed as "Jimmy Hendrix") received his first ever label credit as an arranger of both songs. Also included is the instrumental "Hornet's Nest" and its b-side "Knock Yourself Out [Flying On Instruments]," both of which were composed by Hendrix.

Capping off You Can't Use My Name is the August 1967 track that spawned its namesake. Heard for the first time is the fascinating section of studio chatter that precedes a take of "Gloomy Monday," wherein Hendrix repeatedly requests that Chalpin not use his name in the marketing of the recording, and Chalpin agrees, albeit, ambiguously. Already months deep into litigation, it can only be theorized that Hendrix continued to participate in sessions with Chalpin as a gesture of goodwill in the hope that all would be forgiven. It didn't pan out that way, and the dialog is an interesting footnote to the complicated history between the two parties.

"We are extremely delighted to now be in a position to offer these rare, historic recordings," commented Experience Hendrix President and CEO Janie Hendrix, sister of Jimi Hendrix. "What makes them so special is that they provide an honest look at a great artist during the pivotal time when he was on the cusp of his breakthrough..  a time when Jimi's number one priority was playing and recording, and this set captures him doing just that, both as a collaborator and an innovator. They are more than just recordings, they represent a significant segment in the timeline of Jimi's musical existence."

Original Jimi Hendrix Experience recording engineer Eddie Kramer recently went to pain-staking lengths to maximize the audio quality on the collection. "We've taken every single performance as far back as we could go in terms of source and we came up with the best original performances, stripped them back and re-mixed them and made what we feel is the best representation of those recordings," says Kramer. "It's a continuing archeological sound dig which is to say you sweep away the dirt with a fine brush and find the gem hidden therein.  It's what I call 'forensic audio' where we use every available piece of outboard gear and plug-ins and whatever tools are available to us.  It's been hours and hours of intensive work but it's truly been fun to find the best performances and to make sense out of them."

These recordings made for PPX and RSVP are part of Jimi Hendrix's extraordinary legacy. They neatly align with those other sessions Hendrix participated in during this same era as a sideman for other acts. Absent the confusion as to Hendrix's true involvement, these recordings provide a snapshot of his development immediately prior to his discovery by Chas Chandler. "I was a backing musician playing guitar," Hendrix explained in a 1967 interview. "I was always kept in the background, but I was thinking all the time about what I wanted to do." Enjoyed in this context, these Curtis Knight sessions showcase his evolving technique and emerging brilliance.

Feb 11, 2015 | Bob Dylan's Shadows In The Night Album Becomes Worldwide Hit

HIGH-RANKING GLOBAL CHART POSITIONS MATCH ALBUM'S CRICITCAL ACCLAIM

Feb 11, 2015

NEW YORK, Feb. 11, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Bob Dylan's new album, Shadows In The Night, has debuted in the Top Ten in 13 countries spanning the globe, including #1 chart entries in the United Kingdom, Sweden and Ireland, #2 in the Netherlands and Switzerland, #3 in Austria, Japan and Spain, #6 in Germany and Belgium, #8 in Finland and #10 in Canada.  The album has also debuted at #7 in the United States, making it the artist's 17th studio album to debut in the Top 10 in this country.

Bob Dylan's Shadows In The Night Album Becomes Worldwide Hit

Showcasing the artist's singular interpretive artistry on ten classic American songs, Shadows In The Night is the 36th studio album from Dylan and the first since the release of his worldwide hit Tempest in 2012.  Produced by Jack Frost, Dylan's unique approach to recording the songs included refining complicated arrangements for 30-piece orchestras down to those uniquely tailored for his five-piece band.

The high worldwide chart entries of Shadows In The Night comes on the heels of Dylan's honor as Musicares Person Of The Year at a sold-out ceremony in Los Angeles on February 6.  The event raised more than $7 million for Musicares, the most in the 25-year history of the event.  Following performances of Bob Dylan songs by a who's who of contemporary musicians – including Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, Norah Jones, Jack White, Willie Nelson, Beck, Bonnie Raitt and many others – Dylan held the audience rapt with a wide-ranging, nearly 40-minute speech that has now been excerpted in countless media outlets around the world.  The complete transcript of Dylan's speech, taken directly from the artist's handwritten notes, has been reproduced in its entirety in the New York Times and can be found here:  http://graphics8.nytimes.com/packages/pdf/arts/Bob-Dylan-Speech-Transcription-20150207.pdf

Critical response to Shadows In The Night has been rapturous, with rave reviews coming in from around the globe:

  • David Fricke wrote in Rolling Stone, "The great shock here is Dylan's singing. Dylan's focus and his diction evoke his late-Sixties poise and clarity with an eccentric rhythmic patience in the way he holds words and notes across the faint suggestions of tempo. It is not crooning. It is suspense."
  • The Los Angeles Times's Randall Roberts summed up his thoughts in his review, writing, "Ten songs, 34 minutes, a soaring lifetime's worth of emotion conveyed with the fearlessness of a cliff diver spinning flips and risking belly flops in the open air — that's Dylan and his band on the graceful, often breathtaking Shadows.…Profound, thematically devastating and so well curated as to feel essential."
  • USA Today's Elysa Gardner opined, "To have a songwriter of Dylan's stature champion interpretive singing is cause for celebration. The genuine care and knowing he brings to a different American pop tradition, to the music and lyrics – it's something wonderful."
  • In his 5-star review of the album, The Guardian's Alex Petridis wrote, "It may be the most straightforwardly enjoyable album Dylan's made since Time Out of Mind. He's an unlikely candidate to join the serried ranks of rock stars tackling standards: appropriately enough, given that Frank Sinatra sang all these songs before him, he does it his way, and to dazzling effect."
  • In another 5-star review, Mojo's Michael Simmons wrote, "While countless other contemporaries have recorded Great American Songbook collections, Shadows In The Night -- Dylan's flat-out brilliant contribution to the concept – is not, by any definition, a recreation of the past. His singing on Shadows is his best vocalizing in years – in-studio or out. He glides with the melodies and relaxes into them, enjoying the ride that these gems provide….Much will be made of the autumnal theme: from the age of the material to songs that address mortality. But this extraordinary record is more refreshing burst than last gasp and its timelessness speaks more to life than death."

Concurrent with the release of Shadows In The Night is a 9,000-word interview with Dylan in AARP The Magazine.  Conducted by the publication's Editor-In Chief Robert Love, the interview is one of the most extensive of Dylan's career and covers a broad array of topics, including Frank Sinatra's enduring influence, Irving Berlin, recording of the new album, whether young people find songs from the '40s and '50s to be 'corny,' corporate influence in the U.S., his period of self-seclusion in the mid-1960s and growing up without television, to name only several.  The interview can be found in its entirety on AARP's website (http://aarp.org/dylan).

Bob Dylan's five previous studio albums have been universally hailed as among the best of his storied career, achieving new levels of commercial success and critical acclaim for the artist. The Platinum-selling Time Out Of Mind from 1997 earned multiple Grammy Awards, including Album Of The Year, while "Love and Theft" continued Dylan's Platinum streak and earned several Grammy nominations and a statue for Best Contemporary Folk album.

Modern Times, released in 2006, became one of the artist's most popular albums, selling more than 2.5 million copies worldwide and earning Dylan two more Grammys. Together Through Life became the artist's first album to debut at #1 in both the U.S. and the UK, as well as in five other countries, on its way to surpassing sales of one million copies.  Tempest received unanimous worldwide critical acclaim upon release and reached the Top 5 in 14 countries, while the artist's globe-spanning concert tours of the past few years have heavily emphasized that album's singular repertoire.

These five releases fell within a 15-year creative span that also included the recording of an Oscar- and Golden Globe-winning composition, "Things Have Changed," from the film Wonder Boys, in 2001; a worldwide best-selling memoir, Chronicles Vol. 1, which spent 19 weeks on the New York Times Best Seller List, in 2004, and a Martin Scorsese-directed documentary, No Direction Home, in 2005. Bob Dylan also released his first collection of holiday standards, Christmas In The Heart, in 2009, with all of the artist's royalties from that album being donated to hunger charities around the world.

In recent years, Bob Dylan was the recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States' highest civilian honor. He was awarded a special Pulitzer Prize in 2008 for "his profound impact on popular music and American culture, marked by lyrical compositions of extraordinary poetic power." He was also the recipient of the Officier de la Legion d'honneur in 2013, Sweden's Polar Music Award in 2000, Doctorates from the University of St. Andrews and Princeton University, as well as numerous other honors.

Bob Dylan has sold more than 125 million records around the world.

"Shadows In The Night is quite gorgeous, the sound of an old man picking over memories, lost loves, regrets, triumphs and fading hopes amid an ambient tumble of haunting electric instrumentation. It is spooky, bittersweet, mesmerisingly moving and showcases the best singing from Dylan in 25 years….[An] extraordinary record. The Telegraph Neil McCormick

"The sound of Shadows In The Night is clear as water.  Not only can you hear every word, every note, that Dylan sings, but you can hear him draw breath before beginning to sing, and sighing out the end of a line.  The instrumentals – even the infrequent horns, and soft, subtle drums – don't ever drown him out.  You're as close as the microphone, making this record feel as intensely personal as, perhaps, it is to its maker.  Dylan sings these songs intimately, sometimes conversationally, with emotion and humor….Shadows In The Night is an early valentine to us all.  It's music to dance to in someone's arms, slowly, with half-forgotten steps in the formal patterns of long ago.  It's a record to remember to, to dream to, and -- most of all -- to feel to." No Depression Anne Margaret Daniel

"A tour-de-force of restrained genius….This is indisputably the singer's most memorable vocal performance in years: irreducibly "Dylan", yet freighted with an unexpected beauty that powerfully reinforces these tales of love, loss and sorrow - and refracted through some of the most tantalising melodies ever committed to manuscript."GQ.com UK Bill Prince

"[A] stunning new album….Dylan turns the tired standards into introspective, wise musical poems, just as Sinatra did."Boston HeraldJed Gottlieb

"A gem…., once you get past the initial shock of hearing Dylan crooning classics, the biggest surprise is how successfully he pulls it off. How deftly he avoids what could easily have been a ridiculous train wreck. And how he manages to pay respect to timeless songs and an immortal artist — while still doing things his way." Toronto SunDarryl Sterdan

"The performances are almost painfully heartfelt and direct…. Dylan exposes a raw emotional vulnerability that jumps out at the listener…. The music is actually enhanced by Dylan's willingness to move outside his comfort zone. Isn't that what we want from our boldest creative spirits?" Daily BeastTed Gioia

Shadows In The Night
The Critics Have Listened

* * * * (out of 5)
"Quietly provocative and compelling….suggests the chapel-like quiet of a last-chance saloon. The great shock here is Dylan's singing.  Dylan's focus and his diction evoke his late-Sixties poise and clarity with an eccentric rhythmic patience in the way he holds words and notes across the faint suggestions of tempo.  It is not crooning.  It is suspense."
Rolling StoneDavid Fricke

* * * * (out of 4)
For those who care about interpretive singing, Shadows In the Night is cause for celebration — and as vital an album as you're likely to hear this year….[The album] will be a revelation to anyone whose judgment has been shaped by young pop stars and TV talent-show contestants who try to substitute vocal gymnastics and bombast for feeling.
USA TodayElysa Gardner

* * * * * (out of 5)
"While countless other contemporaries have recorded Great American Songbook collections, Shadows In The Night -- Dylan's flat-out brilliant contribution to the concept – is not, by any definition, a recreation of the past.
MojoMichael Simmons

"Ten songs, 34 minutes, a soaring lifetime's worth of emotion conveyed with the fearlessness of a cliff diver spinning flips and risking belly flops in the open air — that's Dylan and his band on the graceful, often breathtaking Shadows.…Profound, thematically devastating and so well curated as to feel essential…..Shadows in the Night is an album that's best appreciated when heard with intention, while sitting still, with volume and focus. It's Dylan upending expectations once again, another left turn in a career filled with them, sharing his wisdom and defining himself through the lines of others."
Los Angeles TimesRandall Roberts

* * * * * (out of 5)
"It may be the most straightforwardly enjoyable album Dylan's made since Time Out of Mind. He's an unlikely candidate to join the serried ranks of rock stars tackling standards: appropriately enough, given that Frank Sinatra sang all these songs before him, he does it his way, and to dazzling effect."
Alex PetridisThe Guardian

* * * * (out of 5)
"Shadows In The Night is quite gorgeous, the sound of an old man picking over memories, lost loves, regrets, triumphs and fading hopes amid an ambient tumble of haunting electric instrumentation. It is spooky, bittersweet, mesmerizingly moving and showcases the best singing from Dylan in 25 years….[An] extraordinary record."

It's a record to remember to, to dream to, and -- most of all -- to feel to."
No Depression Anne Margaret Daniel

"A tour-de-force of restrained genius….This is indisputably the singer's most memorable vocal performance in years: irreducibly "Dylan", yet freighted with an unexpected beauty that powerfully reinforces these tales of love, loss and sorrow - and refracted through some of the most tantalizing melodies ever committed to manuscript."
GQ.com UK Bill Prince

"[A] stunning new album….Dylan turns the tired standards into introspective, wise musical poems, just as Sinatra did."
Boston HeraldJed Gottlieb

"A gem…., once you get past the initial shock of hearing Dylan crooning classics, the biggest surprise is how successfully he pulls it off. How deftly he avoids what could easily have been a ridiculous train wreck. And how he manages to pay respect to timeless songs and an immortal artist — while still doing things his way."
Toronto SunDarryl Sterdan

"The performances are almost painfully heartfelt and direct…. Dylan exposes a raw emotional vulnerability that jumps out at the listener…. The music is actually enhanced by Dylan's willingness to move outside his comfort zone. Isn't that what we want from our boldest creative spirits?"
Daily BeastTed Gioia

Dec 08, 2014 | The Last Internationale Guitarist Edgey Pires To Be Honored At 2014 PORTUGUESE-BRAZILIAN AWARDS

CEREMONY SET FOR DECEMBER 10 AT UNITED NATIONS HEAD OFFICE IN NEW YORK

Dec 8, 2014

NEW YORK, Dec. 8, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- In recognition of his artistic contributions and political activism, Guitarist Edgey Pires of The Last Internationale will be honored at the 2014 PORTUGUESE-BRAZILIAN AWARDS. The artist receives this esteemed honor amongst a total of 20 Portuguese and Brazilian actors, cultural influencers, journalists, and other trailblazers. The gala ceremony takes place at the United Nations head office in New York City on December 10, 2014.

Edgey graduated from college with a degree in Political Science and went on to write two books, Fighting for Freedom: Because A Better World is Possible (Planting Seeds Press) and Negative Dialectics: How to Accurately Interpret the World (unpublished). This marks a significant milestone for both Edgey and the critically acclaimed New York band.

"The UN is where Che Guevara delivered an incendiary speech against US imperialism. It is where Hugo Chaves, decades later, gave a similar speech in which he condemned 'the devil', George W. Bush, who had spoken from the same podium the day before. It is where KRS ONE went to get Hip Hop officially recognized as an international culture. It is where the Security Council vote on which poor, innocent people in remote parts of the world will get bombs dropped on their heads. It is outside of this building that I have held many banners and shouted for human rights and seen many of my fellow Comrades get tear-gassed, pepper-sprayed, beat and dragged off by police," said Edgey. "So when I found out that I was being given the Luso-Brazilian Award at the UN for my artistic achievements and social activism, I was as much shocked as I was honored to be included on the right side of this contentious history. Since the event falls on Human Rights Day, I will also be standing outside (once again) demanding that we get some human rights right here at home. I urge everyone from around the world to head out into the streets and fight for a different world."

During the evening, the PORTUGUESE-BRAZILIAN AWARDS bestows a statue and a diploma upon all honorees. The event aims to bolster and encourage Portuguese and Brazilian communities in the U.S. through recognizing the culture's luminaries and their respective contributions.

This news concludes a monumental year for The Last Internationale. They recently unveiled their star-studded music video for "A Wanted Man" and performed a powerful "Call For Action" show regarding Prop 47 in South Los Angeles. They are now gearing up to launch a campaign around the rising Student Debt Crisis. The band is passionate about this issue and is planning a more formal announcement early next year.

The Last Internationale first emerged in 2013 with their independent EP, New York, 'I Do Mind Dying. Legendary Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello made an introduction between Delila Paz and Edgy Pires and his longtime bandmate Brad Wilk. The drummer ended up joining the group, and they unleashed We Will Reign this past summer. They've performed on The Late Show with David Letterman and recently supported Robert Plant on tour.
