May 23, 2016 | Bob Dylan's Fallen Angels Receives Critical Raves

Album Is Available Now In CD, Vinyl & Digital Formats

May 23, 2016

NEW YORK, May 23, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Bob Dylan's new album, Fallen Angels, is available now in CD, vinyl and digital formats.  Showcasing the artist's singular interpretive artistry on twelve classic American songs, Fallen Angels is the 37th studio album from Dylan and the first since last year's Shadows In The Night.  Produced by Jack Frost, Dylan's unique approach to recording the songs included refining complicated arrangements for 30-piece orchestras down to those uniquely tailored for his five-piece band.  The album can be found at Amazon, iTunes and at all music retail outlets and major streaming services.

BOB DYLAN'S FALLEN ANGELS RECEIVES CRITICAL RAVES; ALBUM IS AVAILABLE NOW IN CD, VINYL & DIGITAL FORMATS

Critical response to Fallen Angels has been enthusiastic, with rave reviews coming in from around the globe:

  • Randy Lewis wrote in The Los Angeles Times, "[Dylan] immediately liberates songs from the big band/big orchestra world from which they emerged, and in which they are most frequently revisited…. [He] reaches to the blues at the core of many of these songs. Thus, they elicit the ache of romantic yearning and loss that often gets subsumed by swelling orchestral forces, background choirs or by singers who are more focused on crafting elegant vocals than finding emotional resonance."
  • Entertainment Weekly's Jim Farber opined, "Dylan alights on these words with a wry delicacy…Tellingly, he delivers these songs of love lost and cherished not with a burning passion but with the wistfulness of experience. They're memory songs now, intoned with a present sense of commitment….Standards likes these and Dylan's own songs now stand as equal American totems."
  • In her 5-star review of the album, The Telegraph's Helen Brown wrote, "Like Sinatra — Dylan's always had a knockout knack for putting a lyric across. Whether whispering into your ear in the jingle jangle morning (he wrote most of his own songs at dawn) or snarling at you from the street corner, he made every word matter….Now he inhabits classic lines by songwriters like Johnny Mercer with weathered ease….These recordings have the relaxed intimacy of a band alone, playing on long after the engineer has set the levels."
  • Rolling Stone's Will Hermes wrote of Dylan's singing on the album, "His phrasing remains spectacular, sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes hilarious" and of the musicianship, "the playing is sublime."
  • In another 5-star review, NOW's Vish Khanna wrote, "Dylan highlights the art of crooning, commanding the prettiest version of his multi-faceted, distinctive voice. This album is not a trifle; in some instances, these might well be newly definitive recordings of the songs. Fallen Angels is a hazy, laid-back history lesson with as many enigmatic twists and turns as a classic double-cross caper. It subverts archetypes of romance, heroism and interpersonal connection to reveal something more sinister about human intent, all packaged in beautiful musicianship of the highest order."

Bob Dylan's six previous studio albums have been universally hailed as among the best of his storied career, achieving new levels of commercial success and critical acclaim for the artist. The Platinum-selling Time Out Of Mind from 1997 earned multiple Grammy Awards, including Album Of The Year, while "Love and Theft" continued Dylan's Platinum streak and earned several Grammy nominations and a statue for Best Contemporary Folk album.

Modern Times, released in 2006, became one of the artist's most popular albums, selling more than 2.5 million copies worldwide and earning Dylan two more Grammys. Together Through Life became the artist's first album to debut at #1 in both the U.S. and the UK, as well as in five other countries, on its way to surpassing sales of one million copies.  Tempest received unanimous worldwide critical acclaim upon release and reached the Top 5 in 14 countries, while the artist's globe-spanning concert tours of the past few years have heavily emphasized that album's singular repertoire.

Shadows In The Night, on which Dylan paid tribute to Frank Sinatra with distinctive interpretations of ten songs previously recorded by Sinatra, debuted in the Top Ten in 14 countries.  The album entered the charts at #1 in the United Kingdom, Sweden and Ireland, #2 in Denmark, the Netherlands and Switzerland, #3 in Austria, Japan and Spain, #6 in Germany and Belgium, #8 in Finland and #10 in Canada.  The album also debuted at #6 in the United States, making it the artist's 17th studio album to debut in the Top 10 in this country.

These six releases fell within a 19-year creative span that also included the recording of an Oscar- and Golden Globe-winning composition, "Things Have Changed," from the film Wonder Boys, in 2001; a worldwide best-selling memoir, Chronicles Vol. 1, which spent 19 weeks on the New York Times Best Seller List, in 2004, and a Martin Scorsese-directed documentary, No Direction Home, in 2005. Bob Dylan also released his first collection of holiday standards, Christmas In The Heart, in 2009, with all of the artist's royalties from that album being donated to hunger charities around the world.

In recent years, Bob Dylan was the recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States' highest civilian honor. He was awarded a special Pulitzer Prize in 2008 for "his profound impact on popular music and American culture, marked by lyrical compositions of extraordinary poetic power." He was also the recipient of the Officier de la Legion d'honneur in 2013, Sweden's Polar Music Award in 2000, Doctorates from the University of St. Andrews and Princeton University, as well as numerous other honors.

Bob Dylan has sold more than 125 million records around the world.

Fallen Angels
The Critics Have Listened

Dylan, who also produced under his pseudonym Jack Frost, immediately liberates songs from the big band/big orchestra world from which they emerged, and in which they are most frequently revisited…. Dylan reaches to the blues at the core of many of these songs. Thus, they elicit the ache of romantic yearning and loss that often gets subsumed by swelling orchestral forces, background choirs or by singers who are more focused on crafting elegant vocals than finding emotional resonance.
Los Angeles TimesRandy Lewis

"[Dylan's] phrasing remains spectacular, sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes hilarious, and the playing is sublime."
Rolling StoneWill Hermes

Bob Dylan is a great singer….  His skill has always been in connection, in expression, in using his voice to capture the essence of the song he is singing.  And with Fallen Angels…Dylan shows how his connection to these songs and to his fans has only grown stronger….Fallen Angels is so well-crafted, the impressive work of a great singer.
NewsdayGlenn Gamboa

Dylan alights on these words with a wry delicacy…Tellingly, he delivers these songs of love lost and cherished not with a burning passion but with the wistfulness of experience. They're memory songs now, intoned with a present sense of commitment….Standards likes these and Dylan¹s own songs now stand as equal American totems.
Entertainment WeeklyJim Farber

Like Sinatra — Dylan's always had a knockout knack for putting a lyric across. Whether whispering into your ear in the jingle jangle morning (he wrote most of his own songs at dawn) or snarling at you from the street corner, he made every word matter….Now he inhabits classic lines by songwriters like Johnny Mercer with weathered ease….These recordings have the relaxed intimacy of a band alone, playing on long after the engineer has set the levels.
The Telegraph - Helen Brown

Dylan digs back into the treasure trove that is the American songbook. The focus here is generally on breezier fare….There is a loose, playful quality to much of the singing here, and to the tracks, which Dylan produced under his nom de studio, Jack Frost. ….This is what a seasoned performer can do with words and music, whether his own or someone else's. Dylan deserves thanks for reminding us of that, again.
USA Today – Elysa Gardner

Dylan highlights the art of crooning, commanding the prettiest version of his multi-faceted, distinctive voice. This album is not a trifle; in some instances, these might well be newly definitive recordings of the songs. Fallen Angels is a hazy, laid-back history lesson with as many enigmatic twists and turns as a classic double-cross caper. It subverts archetypes of romance, heroism and interpersonal connection to reveal something more sinister about human intent, all packaged in beautiful musicianship of the highest order.

Passion and Warfare 25th Anniversary Tour Coming This Year

May 19, 2016

NEW YORK, May 19, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, will release Steve Vai's Modern Primitive / Passion and Warfare 25th Anniversary Edition, a celebratory 2CD collection of classic tracks and previously unreleased music, on Friday, June 24. It is available now for pre-orders: http://smarturl.it/Vai_MPPAW_Amazon

Album Cover

Steve Vai and Legacy Recordings are commemorating the 25th anniversary of Passion and Warfare with a special 2CD edition of the album which includes the first-ever release of Vai's Modern Primitive songs and recordings. Based on song sketches and works-in-progress penned and recorded by Vai following the release of Flex-Able, his debut album, in January 1984, the music on Modern Primitive has been completed by Vai for release as a full album disc and the 2nd CD is the bonus remastering of the Passion and Warfare 25th Anniversary Edition

"The music on Flex-Able is so vastly different from Passion and Warfare, one could wonder if the same guy actually made both records," Steve writes in his liner notes for the collection. "Modern Primitive is the missing link between these two records. It's sort of Cro-Magnon Vai."

Newly remastered from the original analog tapes, the Passion and Warfare 25th Anniversary Edition disc includes, as bonus tracks, four previously unreleased recordings from the Passion and Warfare sessions.

Modern Primitive / Passion and Warfare 25th Anniversary Edition is being released as a 2CD physical collection while each disc will be available as a sepárate title on all digital platforms.

The 2CD Modern Primitive / Passion and Warfare 25th Anniversary Edition will be housed in a 4-panel soft-pack with a 20-page Modern Primitive booklet and a 24-panel Passion and Warfare poster fold.

In addition to the first-time release of his "lost" Modern Primitive music, composer/producer and electric guitar virtuoso Steve Vai will celebrate the 25th anniversary of his landmark album, Passion and Warfare, with a world tour starting on May 28th featuring—for the first time ever in concert—full performances of his groundbreaking instrumental rock masterpiece in its entirety. "Performing this record from top to bottom (with some very special surprises in the works) is something I've always dreamed of doing," Vai said.  "There are songs here I've never performed before, and I'm delighted that 25 years after its release, I feel as though my guitar chops are as much up to the task as ever before."

Often cited as one of the greatest and most influential instrumental rock guitar albums ever recorded, Vai's Passion and Warfare was originally released through Relativity/Epic Records in September 1990 and has been certified Gold by the RIAA. Inspired by a series of dreams Vai had experienced as a young man, Passion and Warfare has been described by the artist as "Jimi Hendrix meets Jesus Christ at a party that Ben Hur threw for Mel Blanc." Recorded at The Mothership, Vai's home studio in the Hollywood Hills, Passion and Warfare includes the classic track, "For the Love of God," cited as one of the best solos of all time in a Guitar World magazine reader's poll.

About Steve Vai
Steve Vai, age 12, picked up the guitar in 1973 and started taking lessons from Joe Satriani (another future guitar hero) shortly after. He soaked up influences ranging from Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page to Jimi Hendrix and Brian May and by the end of the 1970s, was transcribing guitar parts for Frank Zappa. He became a full member of Zappa's band in 1980.

Rapidly becoming one of the most in-demand, versatile, eloquent and soulful sidemen in the business, Vai recorded with Alcatrazz, Whitesnake, David Lee Roth and Public Image Ltd.

He launched his solo career with the release of Flex-Able, a homemade indie album, in 1984. Since 1990, he has recorded and released eight studio albums, eight live albums, two EPs, 12 soundtracks, 20 compilation albums, seven videos and more. Vai has won three Grammy Awards and earned 15 Grammy Award nominations.  He has appeared as a guest artist on more than 40 albums, playing with artists like Alice Cooper, Ozzy Osbourne, Gregg Bissonnett and Joe Jackson, among others.

Sony Music Entertainment and Legacy Recordings signed Steve Vai to an historic multi-album agreement in February 2015.

May 17, 2016 | Legacy Recordings Set to Release LOU REED - THE RCA & ARISTA ALBUM COLLECTION on Friday, October 7

Definitive 17-Disc Deluxe Box Set Anthology Compiles 16 Essential Album Titles from 1972 to 1986, Newly Remastered Under Lou Reed's Personal Supervision

May 17, 2016

NEW YORK, May 17, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, is proud to announce the much-anticipated release of Lou Reed - The RCA & Arista Album Collection on Friday, October 7.

Lou Reed - Gie Knaeps/Photoshot

The definitive box set library of music recorded by the iconic American rock musician from 1972 to 1986, one of the richest and most protean periods of the artist's career, Lou Reed - The RCA & Arista Album Collection is available now for pre-order: http://smarturl.it/lr_ac_itunes and http://smarturl.it/lr_ac_amz.

Lou Reed - The RCA & Arista Album Collection brings together--for the first time in one comprehensive anthology—the 16 groundbreaking studio and live album titles written, recorded (and often produced) by Reed as a solo artist following the 1970 dissolution of the Velvet Underground, the profoundly influential avant-rock ensemble he'd founded in 1965.

"Our first date was a trip to the AES (Audio Engineering Society) convention. As wireheads Lou and I loved beautiful recordings and spent years making our studios, instruments and gear the best they could possibly be," said Laurie Anderson, American musician/composer/performance artist and Lou Reed's wife and partner for twenty-one years.  "Lou put his heart into remastering these records. They are not smoothed out. Sometimes remastering revealed their details and roughness in the most exciting ways. They leap out at you with their original energy.

"I also love the rare images and the great selection of Lou's words about his music in this collection.  Lou was a superb analyst and sharp critic and the interview excerpts bring back his crazy sense of humor, his generosity and his big view of the world and the meaning of music. Anyone who has loved Lou's music will be so happy to have this. I'm really grateful to Sony for putting this one out."

Each of the 16 albums (Lou Reed Live  Take No Prisoners, from November 1978, fills 2CDs) in the 17CD library was newly remastered under Lou's direct personal supervision, a long-term project completed shortly before the artist's passing, at 71, on October 27, 2013.

"This box set was Lou's last project. He oversaw the remastering of all of his solo recordings made for RCA and Arista Records….This work was done at New York's Masterdisk in June and July 2013, with engineer Vlado Meller and Rob Santos of Sony/Legacy," Hal Willner wrote in his liner notes for Lou Reed - The RCA & Arista Album Collection. "Everyone who was in that room or around Lou during this period witnessed a beautiful thing as he enthusiastically relived that whole period of his work with the joy of rediscovery, excitedly pointing out subtleties in sounds he hadn't heard in years. In retrospect, reminiscing about these sessions done less than four months before he died, the moments seem even more magnified."

Lou Reed - The RCA & Arista Album Collection--produced by Lou Reed, Rob Santos, and Hal Willner—offers fans access to several titles which have been out-of-print, hard-to-find or unavailable in the CD and digital music eras.

A limited edition 12"x12" deluxe box set library, Lou Reed - The RCA & Arista Album Collection is the ultimate tribute to an essential epoch in Lou's career as a transformative figure in American music. This definitive anthology contains 16 full-length albums on 17 compact discs in addition to an 80-page hard-bound book featuring memorabilia from Lou's personal archives, rarely seen photos and artwork, interviews with Lou conducted during his years as a recording artist for RCA and Arista and evocative in-depth liner notes—written by Lou's longtime friend and the collection's co-producer Hal Willner—chronicling Lou's involvement with the making of Lou Reed - The RCA & Arista Album Collection.

The collectible deluxe box set also contains—suitable for framing—five 8"x10" prints and a facsimile reproduction of a rare RCA promotional poster (598mm x 572mm, folds to 299mm x 286mm).

Lou Reed - The RCA & Arista Album Collection celebrates the studio and live albums created by Lou Reed in the 1970s and 1980s while demonstrating the crucial contributions he made to the popular and rock music of that era and the decades that followed.

An American master and true rock & roller, Lou Reed transformed popular art, music and culture through a body of work that continues to affect the way fans hear and see the world.

Reed, who cut his first single as a teenager in the late 1950s, began his professional career working as a New York in-house assembly line songwriter in the early 1960s while developing his pure artistic vision as frontman for the Velvet Underground.

After leaving the VU in 1970, Lou launched his unparalleled solo career, beginning with an extended run (1972-1986) at RCA Records and Arista Records that's included a string of signature songs—"Perfect Day," "Walk On The Wild Side," "Satellite of Love," "I Love You, Suzanne"—as well as albums iconic (Transformer, Berlin, Coney Island Baby, New Sensations) and iconoclastic (Metal Machine Music, Lou Reed Live  Take No Prisoners).

Lou Reed brought the insight of literature and the honesty of journalism into some of the most elegant pop songs ever written while recording some of the most artful records ever made. No one has ever understood the primordial essence or the visionary potential of rock & roll better than Lou Reed, the quintessential New York rocker.

Lou Reed was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist in a ceremony at Cleveland's Public Hall held on April 18, 2015. Lou—along with John Cale, Sterling Morrison and Maureen Tucker—was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Velvet Underground in 1996.

"The Bells: A Day Long Celebration of Lou Reed," a full day of free events curated by Laurie Anderson and Hal Willner, has been scheduled for Saturday, July 30, 2016 as part of the Lincoln Center Out of Doors festival in New York City (LCOutofDoors.org).

The best-selling female recording artist in history, Streisand partners with some of Hollywood's biggest stars to sing Broadway classics on her upcoming album. Following the release of her 2014 record-breaking "Partners," "ENCORE: Movie Partners Sing Broadway" is Streisand's third and long-awaited Broadway album. Streisand released "The Broadway Album" and "Back to Broadway" in 1985 and 1993, respectfully, both of which went multi-platinum.

With the longest span of number one albums in history, Streisand has recorded 52 gold, 31 platinum and 13 multi-platinum albums in her career.  She is the only woman to make the All-Time Top 10 Best Selling Artists list, an honor which includes fellow duet partners Elvis Presley and Billy Joel. Streisand also has the longest span of number one albums in history, just under 50 years.

With her live performances being so rare and special, the excitement surrounding a Streisand tour is unequaled. Following a 27-year hiatus from live concerts, Streisand's 1994 world tour garnered a record-setting 5 million phone requests to Ticketmaster and sold out within the first hour. Her shows in fall 2006 broke house records in 14 of the 16 venues in which she played (in the other two arenas, Streisand already held the buildings' records).

Streisand's last tour in 2012, BACK TO BROOKLYN, highlighted an emotional return to performing in concert in her home borough for the first time since she was in grade school. Of the first of her Brooklyn shows, which helped inaugurate the brand new Barclays Center, The New York Times praised Streisand's "spellbinding voice" and noted, "Like few singers of any age, she has the gift of conveying a primal human longing in a beautiful sound." The Los Angeles Times said she "put the audience immediately under the spell of her folksy grandiosity. Streisand ... isn't just a star — she's a world view, a style of being, an entire cosmology, with the highest possible thread-count sheets. You don't just come for the music; you come for the whole church service. The sermon, broken up into bits, is inseparable from the songs."

Following a North American run, the tour broke records throughout Europe, and culminated in two spine-tingling performances in Israel, thrilling crowds who "loved her even before a perfectly-pitched note came out of her mouth," as described by Haaretz, "and every note was, indeed perfect."

Widely recognized as an icon in multiple entertainment fields, Streisand has attained unprecedented achievements as a recording artist, actor, concert performer, producer, director, author and songwriter. Streisand has been awarded two Oscars, five Emmys, ten Golden Globes, eight Grammys plus two special Grammys, a special Tony award in 1970, and two CableACE Awards – the only artist to receive honors in all of those fields of endeavor. Streisand received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama this past November. Her many other honors include the American Film Institute's Lifetime Achievement Award, the National Endowment for the Arts Medal, three Peabody Awards and the French Légion d'Honneur. She is also the first female film director to receive the Kennedy Center Honors.

Streisand is a devoted philanthropist who works tirelessly to fight for what she believes in. A woman of action, Streisand founded The Barbra Streisand Women's Heart Center at Cedars-Sinai, helping to raise awareness and push research into women's heart disease, the leading cause of death among women.

May 13, 2016 | Sony Classical Releases Yehudi Menuhin - The Complete American Victor Recordings In Celebration of the 100th Anniversary of Violinist Yehudi Menuhin - 6- CD Box Set Available Now

May 13, 2016

NEW YORK, May 13, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- To celebrate Yehudi Menuhin's centenary, Sony Classical releases Yehudi Menuhin – The Complete American Victor Recordings. Available now, the 6-CD box set brings together the legendary early recordings of one of the greatest violinists of the 20th century, plus previously unpublished releases and more.

Gems of this special set include newly remastered versions of Menuhin's earliest recordings at age 11. These include a set of stylishly played encore items with his "beloved teacher," Louis Persinger at the piano, and previously unreleased encore pieces by Kreisler and Wieniawski from 1929. Other highlights are the first ever releases of two previously unpublished items: The December 1949 recordings of Beethoven's "Spring" and "Kreutzer" Sonatas with Menuhin's sister Hephzibah playing the piano.

The box set also features official CD releases from original analogue master discs and tapes of Mendelssohn's teenage D Minor Violin Concerto, a work that Menuhin himself rescued, buying and editing the surviving manuscript, and premiering it at Carnegie Hall in February 1952; Bach's Sonata No. 3, a historic 1944 recording with the legendary Polish harpsichordist Wanda Landowska; and Bartók's Sonata No. 1, a vividly intense account of a piece that Menuhin had played for Bartók. Menuhin is impressively supported by his accompanist, and pianist Adolph Baller, a Polish-born musician who was Menuhin's chamber music partner from 1939 until after WW2, despite having had all his fingers broken by Nazi torturers in Vienna before his escape from Europe.

Making its first official appearance in CD form is a 1951 account of Bruch's ever-popular Concerto No. 1 with Charles Munch and the Boston Symphony. This piece sits alongside Menuhin's better-known 1945 recording of the same work with Monteux and the San Francisco Symphony, and his 1946 recording of Bartók's Violin Concerto No. 2 with Antal Doráti and the Dallas Symphony. Additionally, the set features the first ever CD release of two songs, Rachmaninoff's "In the Silent Night," and Handel's "Ombra mai fu" with the leading Metropolitan Opera baritone Robert Merrill.

Between his birth in New York on April 22, 1916, and his death in Berlin on March 12, 1999, Yehudi Menuhin, son of Russian immigrants, grew from a brilliant child prodigy violinist at age seven, into one of the 20th century's finest and most celebrated artists. Aside from his work as a conductor and soloist, Menuhin was also a peace campaigner, civil rights activist, spiritual guru and revered senior statesman of the musical world. He ended his days as the Right Honourable the Lord Menuhin of Stoke d'Abernon, with a seat in the House of Lords. Furthermore, Menuhin established two music schools, a violin competition, and carried music beyond concert halls and into the wider community.

Born June 22, 1936 in Brownsville, Texas, Kristoffer ("Kris") Kristofferson has been an active force in the entertainment industry for the past half century. An influential singer/songwriter who changed the contours of American country music with the lyrical insight and penetrating honesty of his songs, a US Army veteran (who served from 1960-1965, achieving the rank of Captain) and former Oxford University Rhodes Scholar who won a Golden Globes Best Actor Award (for his starring role opposite Barbra Streisand in the 1976 movie smash "A Star Is Born"), Kris Kristofferson is both a multi-faceted artist and a bonafide American icon.

A musician whose sound bridges the worlds of country, folk, rock and gospel, Kristofferson is one of the sonic architects of the American outlaw country movement. Having written and recorded such hit songs as "Me and Bobby McGee," "For the Good Times," "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down," "Help Me Make It Through the Night" and many others, Kris Kristofferson is among the most influential and admired musicians in the world, with a body of work that spans the late 20th and early 21st centuries. In 1985, he united with fellow outlaw country artists Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings to form The Highwaymen, the world's first country music "supergroup." He was induced into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2004.

Kristofferson wrote his first songs while studying at Merton College at Oxford University, hoping the craft of songwriting would further his goal of becoming a novelist. While in England, he cut his first records as "Kris Carson" for the Top Rank Records label. This early foray into the music industry proved unsuccessful. Graduating Oxford with a master's degree in English literature in 1960, Kristofferson eventually relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, where he began to ply his trade as a songwriter while working as a series of other jobs including helicopter pilot, oil rig operator (in Louisiana) and janitor at Columbia Recording Studios.

By 1967, Kristofferson had signed with Epic Records, who released an unsuccessful single, "Golden Idol"/"Killing Time". Meanwhile, Kris Kristofferson-penned songs were hitting the charts, performed by other artists including Roy Drusky ("Jody and the Kid"); Billy Walker & the Tennessee Walkers ("From the Bottle to the Bottom"); Ray Stevens ("Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down"); Jerry Lee Lewis ("Once More with Feeling"); Faron Young ("Your Time's Comin'"); and Roger Miller ("Me and Bobby McGee", "Best of all Possible Worlds", and "Darby's Castle"). Kris started to achieve attention as a performer in his own right, especially after being introduced on-stage at the Newport Folk Festival by Johnny Cash.

Signed as a recording artist to Monument Records by the prescient Fred Foster, Kristofferson saw his eponymous debut album released in 1970. The album, Kristofferson, included newly written originals as well as some of Kris's most familiar hits for other artists; re-released as Me & Bobby McGee a year later, the collection put Kris Kristofferson front and center in the worlds of popular and country music. Ray Price's recording of "For the Good Times" helped the composition win the Academy of Country Music's Song of the Year in 1970 while Johnny Cash's version of "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down" secured the Song of the Year award that same year from the Country Music Association. Kris Kristofferson's double win for Song of the Year in 1970 marked the only time a single individual has ever achieved the same award--from Country Music's two competing professional guilds--in the same year for two different songs.

In 1971, Janis Joplin's definitive recording of "Me and Bobby McGee" became a #1 hit and remains a radio perennial to this day. While a string of Kristofferson songs became hits for other artists--Ray Price ("I'd Rather Be Sorry"); Joe Simon ("Help Me Make It Through the Night"); Bobby Bare ("Please Don't Tell Me How the Story Ends"); O.C. Smith ("Help Me Make It Through the Night"); Jerry Lee Lewis ("Me and Bobby McGee"); Patti Page ("I'd Rather Be Sorry"); Peggy Little ("I've Got to Have You") and Kenny Rogers ("Me and Bobby McGee"), Kristofferson solidified his position as a recordings artist with the release of The Silver Tongued Devil and I in 1971. He swept the Grammys in 1971 with several nominations, winning Country Song of the Year for "Help Me Make It Through the Night."

May 11, 2016 | Masterworks Broadway Releases the New York City Center Encores! Cast Recording Of Lerner & Loewe's Paint Your Wagon

Keith Carradine, Justin Guarini and Alexandra Socha Star in the Classic 1951 Musical

Never Before Recorded Song "What Do Other Folks Do?" Featured as Bonus Track

Available May 27, 2016

May 11, 2016

NEW YORK, May 11, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Masterworks Broadway will release the New York City Center Encores! cast recording of Lerner & Loewe's Paint Your Wagon starring Keith Carradine, Justin Guarini and Alexandra Socha, on May 27, 2016. Filled with gorgeous standards such as "They Call the Wind Maria," "I Talk to the Trees," and "Wand'rin' Star," Paint Your Wagon is Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe's sweepingly ambitious and surprisingly realistic take on freedom, family, and racism in the Gold Rush-happy America of 1853.

The outstanding March 2015 production by Encores! brought the almost-forgotten show back to New York's mainstream stage for the first time since the original Broadway production closed in 1952.  And because the original cast album – an early limited capacity monaural LP – had omitted so much of the music, the score was ripe for rediscovery and a brand new recording. Helping to capture the spirit of the original Broadway production were the full handwritten scores used in 1951 by Franz Allers (Loewe's favorite musical director) and discovered accidentally by Rodgers & Hammerstein musicologist Bruce Pomahac at the bottom of a musty Warner Chappell trunk stored, curiously, at the R&H offices in New York.

Album co-producer and Encores! Music Director Rob Berman leads the thirty member cast and thirty-one piece Encores! Orchestra, in the 2015 stereo cast album that celebrates the scope and riches of Lerner & Loewe's exceptional score.  Much of the original dance music orchestrated by Trude Rittmann, created in close collaboration with both Loewe and choreographer Agnes de Mille, appears on this recording for the first time.  Also recorded for the first time on this album is the bonus track "What Do Other Folks Do?" which was dropped from the original production before the show reached New York and whose historical importance is clear:  Lerner and Loewe would later recycle the concept for Camelot's  "What Do the Simple Folk Do?"

From the propulsive opening number "I'm On My Way" through ruminative ballads like "I Talk to the Trees" and "Another Autumn" (the show's most underappreciated gem), Loewe deploys all of the skills of a great Broadway composer with brio and confidence, and Lerner's lyrics achieve an easy vernacular language while remaining beautifully crafted. There is a rowdy, rhythmic energy in numbers like "Whoop-Ti-Ay" and "There's a Coach Comin' In" that capture the exuberance of the pioneer spirit, and a gentle folksiness in "I Still See Elisa," that is classic mid-period Broadway.

In California in May 1853, Ben Rumson strikes gold and establishes a community in his own name. The show follows the progress of the town as hundreds of men come to dig for gold. There are two subplots: the first focuses on the romance between Ben's daughter Jennifer and Julio, a miner forced to live outside the town because he is Mexican; and the second involves the arrival of a Mormon (Jacob) and his two wives (Sarah and Elizabeth), one of whom Ben "buys" in order to free from her abusive marriage.

After eighteen months, the gold has run dry and the miners move on.  But Jennifer and Julio stay to make a new life, counseled by Rumson who realizes that after violating nature and stealing the earth's riches it's time to settle down and farm the land rather than resume the search for gold.  Thus the story depicts the birth, flourishing, death and rebirth of a town over a fixed period of time, an ambitious concept for a Broadway musical.

Masterworks Broadway is the home to a majority of Lerner & Loewe's recorded works including Brigadoon (Original Broadway Cast, 1957 Studio Cast and 1966 Television Cast), Paint Your Wagon (Original Broadway Cast), My Fair Lady (Original Broadway Cast, Original London Cast, Original Motion Picture Soundtrack and 1976 Broadway Cast), Camelot (Original Broadway Cast) and Gigi (Original Broadway Cast), and is proud to add the Encores! Cast Recording of Paint Your Wagon to this illustrious list.

May 09, 2016 | The Piano Guys Receive An RIAA Gold Album Certification For Debut Album

A RARE ACHIEVEMENT FOR AN INSTRUMENTAL GROUP

May 9, 2016

NEW YORK, May 9, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- What began as a musical hobby and friendship quickly became an extremely successful worldwide career for The Piano Guys. Their innovative compositions which blend classical music with pop tunes, along with their compelling videos, gained millions of fans and led them to work with Sony Music Masterworks who released their debut self-titled album in 2012. Today the four dads from Utah celebrate an official RIAA Gold Album Certification for that first album - The Piano Guys. This is a spectacular achievement for any new artist, especially for an instrumental group. To date, the group has released five albums on Portrait/Sony Music Masterworks: The Piano Guys, The Piano Guys 2, A Family Christmas, Wonders and The Piano Guys: Live!  Collectively these releases have spent 287 weeks at #1 on the combined Billboard Charts.

Of the Gold Certification Bogdan Roscic, President of Sony Music Masterworks says: "A Gold album is such an important milestone, but it is only the latest chapter of the remarkable story The Piano Guys have written in the last few years. They have touched people of all ages with their unique blend of musical styles and the boundless ingenuity in creating the stream of videos which has built such an enormous online audience for the band. We are proud of their achievements and look forward to many more projects to come."

The Piano Guys - Steven Sharp Nelson, Jon Schmidt, Al Van der Beek and Paul Anderson - quickly became an online sensation by way of their immensely successful series of striking self-made music videos; most notably their 10-handed version of One Direction's "What Makes You Beautiful." Their over 4.7 million loyal YouTube subscribers look forward to watching them perform in exotic locations around the world including at The Great Wall of China, atop a mountain in Utah and at Iguazu Falls in Brazil.

Continuing their quest to film a music video at each of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Piano Guys recently filmed their new video at the Mayan ruins, Chichén Itzá. In this new video they mashup "My Own Home" and "Bear Necessities" from The Jungle Book film with Handel's 'Sarabande.' View The Jungle Book / Sarabande video here.

The Piano Guys touch fans of all ages beyond the computer screen. They continue to tour the world and sell out shows at legendary venues like The Greek Theatre in LA and Carnegie Hall in New York City. This month they make their way through Canada on their first national tour of the country.

Available for pre-order at: http://smarturl.it/KOTWF_iTunesDeluxe

Cover

Curated and remastered by Adam Ant, this new Legacy edition includes the original 12 track album, B sides, previously unreleased studio demos and rough cuts, a previously unissued live recording and rarities all fully remastered from original tape by Adam Ant.

In extensive liner notes Adam Ant tells us in his own words the story behind the record and the "band of brothers in musical arms, who came together in the studio in 1980 to create a bit of magic."

The demise of the original Ants line up following the release of Dirk Wears White Sox in 1979 is well documented.  What came next for Adam & The Ants Mark 2 was an altogether new approach that would result in one of the most important British records of all time.

Kings Of The Wild Frontier was the result of a fierce, determined and ultimately realized ambition to turn the music scene on its head, in Adam's own words, "to be the best, in tune with and in line with no one."

By 1980, the aftermath of the glory days of punk loomed large and grey over Britain and popular culture.  As Bowie and Bolan had done a decade earlier for the kids trying to shake off the disappointing hangover of their parents' Swinging Sixties, Adam & The Ants threw off the old guard of black and grey and safety pins and sneer and remerged on to the music scene with an undefinable brand and sound all of their own.  Ant music! 'a new flavor'…'a golden new royalty'…'music for a future age.'

The loss of his Ants and fan requests to 'play the old stuff' proved the catalyst for change.  Adam Ant says, "Everything till then had been black and white…from now on there had to be color, dash and fire … heroism"…"we felt like heroes and here was the soundtrack to make others feel the same."

Three decades on and the heroic Kings Of The Wild Frontier remains as bold and magnificent as ever.

May 06, 2016 | Till Brönner Signs Exclusive International Agreement With Sony Music Masterworks

May 6, 2016

NEW YORK, May 6, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Music Masterworks is pleased to announce a long-term worldwide recording agreement with star trumpeter Till Brönner. The newly signed agreement reflects Brönner's position as a leading light on the global jazz scene and comes as he performs at the White House this week for President Barack Obama as part of the International Jazz Day celebrations. Brönner is full-swing into an exceptional career that sees him play, sing, produce, compose, arrange, record and collaborate with the greatest artists from the jazz world and beyond.

The first project under the new contract, which will see Brönner's albums released globally through Sony Music Masterworks division, is titled The Good Life and is scheduled for release September 2, 2016. An intimate, pared-down, back-to-basics tour de force, the album is testimony to the unique power of jazz to amplify and enrich the most beautiful and poignant moments of our lives. Says Brönner, "This music is deep inside of me and has a feeling of where I want to be – it's my territory. I can travel the world but this kind of music is really my home. This one I wanted to record for a long time and thanks to legendary producer Ruud Jacobs we did it. The ingredients seem simple and yet so essential: Some of the best compositions and lyrics on the planet recorded with the very best musicians on it."

The album was recorded in Los Angeles and Amsterdam with Brönner on trumpet and vocals, John Clayton (bass) – who also provided most of the arrangements on the album –, Jeff Hamilton (drums), Larry Goldings (keyboards), and Anthony Wilson (guitar). Brönner will tour the album from November 2016 with dates in Germany, Switzerland, Japan, France, UK, Poland and Benelux countries with further dates to follow.

Hailing from a musical family, Brönner studied jazz trumpet at the Music Academy in Cologne with Jiggs Whigham and Jon Eardley before winning the solo trumpet player position of the renowned RIAS Big Band Berlin aged only 20. Two years later his first studio recording Generations of Jazz with Ray Brown, Jeff Hamilton, Frank Chastenier and Grégoire Peters appeared and won the German Recording Critics Award. Thus began his outstanding recording career, which has seen many of his 18-studio albums garner gold status in Germany. His varied recording projects have also won him a Grammy nomination and numerous German ECHO Awards. He has also produced albums for American jazz singer Mark Murphy and great German singer Hildegard Knef, amongst several others.

Throughout his stellar career he has worked with such musicians as Dave Brubeck, Herbie Hancock, Tony Bennett, Annie Lennox, Michael Brecker, James Last, Monty Alexander, Al Di Meola, Chaka Khan, Natalie Cole, Johnny Griffin, Nena, Ernie Watts, Michael Franks and many others. Guest appearances on his albums have included a wide range of internationally renowned artists such as Annie Lennox, Carla Bruni, Madeleine Peyroux, Melody Gardot, Arturo Sandoval, Gregory Porter, Lizzy Loeb, Joy Denalane, Aimee Mann, Sérgio Mendes, Kurt Elling, Milton Nascimento and Luciana Souza.

Brönner has been a household name in Germany since his 2010 TV engagement as a judge on the German franchise of the hit talent show X-Factor and through his regular jazz show on the national radio station Klassik Radio.

A consummate performer, Brönner tours internationally with his numerous groups, including duo (with bassist Dieter Ilg), quintet and since 2015 with his 20-piece Till Brönner Orchestra. Engagements see him perform regularly on the world's most prestigious stages, including New York's Carnegie Hall and Blue Note Jazz Club Tokyo, and at leading jazz festivals. In 2015 Brönner was invited to the International Jazz Day in Paris, initialized by the United Nations and Herbie Hancock, to perform at the UNESCO world stage with other stars of the international jazz world. He returns to perform at this year's International Jazz Day at the White House in the presence of President Barack Obama along with Herbie Hancock, Sting, Aretha Franklin, Trombone Shorty, Diana Krall, Al Jarreau, Hugh Masekela, Buddy Guy and Chick Corea amongst others.

In recent years Brönner has developed an additional artistic endeavour in the field of photography and has a special partnership with the top camera brand Leica. His first photography book Faces of Talent was published at the end of 2014 and formed the basis of a special exhibition held at the Leica Gallery Los Angeles in December 2015 and is currently being exhibited at the Leica Gallery Wetzlar in Germany.

Till Brönner said: "I couldn't be more thrilled to work with a company that completely understands my work and aspirations for the coming years. In the field of arts you more than ever need strong associates and partners such as Sony Masterworks to meet with both jazz fans and potential new audiences out there. I am happy and proud to join the Sony family!"

Bogdan Roščić, President of Sony Music Masterworks, said: "It is a privilege to have Till Brönner join the Sony Music Masterworks roster. He is the type of artist that has maybe become a bit too rare in jazz – not just an unbelievable musician, but an entertainer, a charismatic and stylish figure equally at home in fine art photography or the mainstream media. We look forward to developing many exciting projects with him in the future."

This recording deal comes in addition to Brönner's long-term live agreement with DEAG Deutsche Entertainment AG that will see his live dates exclusively handled by DEAG Classics in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the UK, with the option for expansion into other European countries.

May 06, 2016 | Sony Classical Releases Love & Friendship Soundtrack - Available Digitally May 6 and on CD May 13

Music performed by the Irish Film Orchestra under the direction of Mark Suozzo

May 6, 2016

NEW YORK, May 6, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Classical proudly announces the release of LOVE & FRIENDSHIP (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) available digitally May 6 and on CD, May 13. LOVE & FRIENDSHIP, writer-director Whit Stillman's adaptation of Jane Austen's Lady Susan, was the comedy hit of this year's Sundance and Rotterdam film festivals.  The film arrives in theatres nationwide on May 13th 2016.

ABOUT LOVE & FRIENDSHIP

Set in the 1790s, earlier than most Austen tales, LOVE & FRIENDSHIP concerns beautiful young widow Lady Susan Vernon (Kate Beckinsale) who has come to Churchill, the estate of her in-laws, to wait out colourful rumours about her dalliances circulating through polite society. Whilst ensconced there, she decides to secure a husband for herself and for her daughter, Frederica, played by Morfydd Clark.

Chloë Sevigny, who starred with Beckinsale in Stillman's The Last Days of Disco (1998), plays Lady Susan's friend and confidante Alicia Johnson, with Stephen Fry as her husband, the "very Respectable" Mr. Johnson. The waters are troubled by the arrival at Churchill of the handsome, eligible Reginald DeCourcy (Xavier Samuel) and silly but cheerful -- and very rich -- Sir James Martin (Tom Bennett).

The film currently has a very rare perfect 100% rating on the "Rotten Tomatoes" critics website.  Tim Robey, writing in the Telegraph (UK), gave the film 5 out of 5 stars: "Flat-out hilarious. Jane Austen has never been funnier. Lives up to every possible expectation you could set for it."  Peter Howell, writing in the Toronto Star, calls the film, "A joy to watch and a pleasure to listen to."

LOVE & FRIENDSHIP is produced by Whit Stillman, Katie Holly and Lauranne Bourrachot, and co-produced by Raymond van der Kaaij.

LOVE & FRIENDSHIP is a Westerly Films, Blinder Films, Chic Films production in co-production with Revolver Amsterdam & Arte France Cinema in association with Protagonist Pictures, Soficinema 11 & Cinemage 10 & the Netherlands Films Fund & with the participation of Bord Scannán na hÉireann/Irish Film Board.

ABOUT THE SOUNDTRACK

About the music, director Whit Stillman writes:

"The Love & Friendship soundtrack provided us with the opportunity to use the music we love to enhance Jane Austen's delightful story. Obscure as well as better known works by Handel, Purcell, Charpentier, Mozart, Vivaldi & other composers of the Pantheon are joined by less frequently recorded composers such as  Frémart, Boyce, Jadin, and Vogel. All the music was recorded under the direction of Mark Suozzo. Mark has had the key role in the music for all our films since 1989 when (for Metropolitan) he arranged a two-handed piano version of Bedrich Smetana's Die Moldau, each hand recorded separately, among other feats. Our second collaboration (Barcelona) reflected our enthusiasm for Baroque music, which finds fuller expression in this soundtrack. Jane Austen's story of Lady Susan Vernon & her amours was written in the 1790s but music from an earlier period seemed better to reflect the spirit of the piece. Paris-based composer Benjamin Esdraffo wrote key additional tracks, including the opening titles' harp theme. Period music expert Etienne Jardin greatly aided the musical research while film editor Sophie Corra helped select the music which best met the film's dramatic needs. In late August 2015 Mark, associate musical director Tomas Peire Serrate and the London-based mixer Steven McLaughlin convened at Windmill Lane Studios in Dublin where Mark conducted the Irish Film Or‎chestra in this all-original recording."

Mark Suozzo, for his part, adds:

"From the first strains of Benjamin Esdraffo's Harp Theme, the music of Love & Friendship brings the Georgian era to life through a variety of musical styles—dramatic French overtures, marches (both quick and stately), a brisk country dance, wistful sensuous arias, aggressive movements from a Vivaldi cello concerto and Beethoven's cello sonatas, sonorous and idyllic wind symphonies and the spiritual quality of the religious music of Charpentier and Frémart.  The music frames the action—it accompanies our journey to places as dramatic (and sometimes pompous) as the country estates, but also welcomes us to the domestic tranquility within.

"Caitriona Walsh's fine Irish Film Orchestra, ably led by concertmistress Therese Timoney, brought a stylistic unity to the many musical genres and composers represented here. Recordist/mixer Steven McLaughlin's deep respect for the style and meticulous attention to sonic detail will, I hope, make the listener appreciate once more the fine performances in the film.

"Handel's sensuous arias like Cor di Padre and Urne funestre have a restrained quality, filled with longing and deep emotion—they are brilliantly performed here by Chloe Martin. Dianne Marshall's harp starts us off with notes of domestic tranquility that fade as the dramatic proceedings get more complicated. William Butt's cello solos have the air of danger and portent in the Beethoven and the Vivaldi. David Adams' harpsichord sparkles throughout—his solo on D'Agincourt's La Sonnig is a gem. It is great to have it here in the clear of the banter at the wedding reception."

Called "one of R&B's most elegant accessories to seduction" in the New York Times earlier this year, Maxwell returns to the themes of love and relationships on "Lake By The Ocean." "Heartbreak is always at the core of most of the things I write," he says. "The song is about a vast unfettered love deeply connected to the intimacy one is able to share with another after a time of great struggle and betrayal. It's an expression of cleansing and escape, a washing away of the past and joining forces in love with the beauty of romance, nature and the earth."

"Lake by the Ocean," written and produced by Musze and his longtime collaborator Hod David, is a classic-sounding Maxwell hit - an elegant, slinky, yearning song that echoes his 2009 smash "Pretty Wings" or his early hit "Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder)."

blackSUMMERS'night is Maxwell's first album in seven years. It is the second installment in a musical trilogy that began with 2009's platinum-selling, BLACKsummers'night, which debuted at #1 and was one of the year's most critically lauded releases. The new album comes 20 years after his genre-defining debut, Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite.

The singer and songwriter recorded blackSUMMERS'night in New York over the last several years. "I'm working with all of the same people on the new album. It's always been a family type of thing, and I think that that's what, maybe, has made it special. It feels, to me, even better than what we did twenty years ago," he said recently.

Maxwell redefined classic soul music in April of 1996 when he released his critically acclaimed debut on Columbia, Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite. It earned Grammy nominations, double platinum status and RIAA gold for the single, "Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder)." The platinum albums Embrya (1998) and Now (2001) followed. After eight years, 2009's BLACKsummers'night debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and won two Grammys, including Best R&B Album. To date, Maxwell has achieved 13 gold and platinum certifications from the RIAA.

Maxwell will announce summer tour dates on April 11 at http://www.musze.com/.

Apr 07, 2016 | New Bob Dylan Studio Album - Fallen Angels - Set For May 20 Release

Apr 7, 2016

NEW YORK, April 7, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Columbia Records confirmed today that a new studio album from Bob Dylan, Fallen Angels, will be released on May 20.  Featuring twelve classic American tunes written by some of music's most acclaimed and influential songwriters, the album showcases Dylan's unique and much-lauded talents as a vocalist, arranger and bandleader.  The Jack Frost-produced album is the 37th studio set from Bob Dylan and marks the first new music from the artist since Shadows In The Night, which was released in early 2015.

NEW BOB DYLAN STUDIO ALBUM - FALLEN ANGELS - SET FOR MAY 20 RELEASE; 12-song collection spotlights compositions from great American songwriters interpreted by Dylan through his singular talents as a vocalist, arranger and bandleader

One of the album's recordings, "Melancholy Mood" is available today on iTunes as an Instant Gratification track, and will also be released as part of a four-track 7" EP on April 16 as part of the nationwide Record Store Day.  The track can also be streamed via a "Vinyl Video" on YouTube: http://smarturl.it/melancholymoodFallen Angels is now available for pre-order on iTunes, Amazon and Barnes & Noble.  The album will also be available May 20 in a limited blue vinyl edition exclusively at Barnes and Noble.

On Fallen Angels, Dylan has chosen songs from a diverse array of writers such as Johnny Mercer, Harold Arlen, Sammy Cahn and Carolyn Leigh to record with his touring band.  The album was recorded at Capitol Studios in Hollywood in 2015.

The artist's previous album of classic American songs, 2015's Shadows In The Night, reached the Top 10 in seventeen countries, including #7 in the U.S., with #1 debuts in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Sweden and Norway.  The album also received worldwide critical acclaim, with The Telegraph's Neil McCormick giving the album five out of five stars and describing the work as "spooky, bittersweet, mesmerizingly moving" with "the best singing from Dylan in 25 years."  Jon Pareles wrote in the New York Times, "Mr. Dylan presents yet another changed voice…a subdued, sustained tone….Shadows in the Night maintains its singular mood: lovesick, haunted, suspended between an inconsolable present and all the regrets of the past."

Tempest received unanimous worldwide critical acclaim upon release and reached the Top 5 in 14 countries, while Shadows In The Night was hailed by fans and critics for Dylan's singular interpretive artistry.

These six releases fell within an 18-year creative span that also included the recording of an Oscar- and Golden Globe-winning composition, "Things Have Changed," from the film Wonder Boys, in 2001; a worldwide best-selling memoir, Chronicles Vol.

Tony Bennett is the only artist to successfully bridge the worlds of pop music and jazz on an international scale for over 60 years. The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern becomes part of a timeless legacy of recordings that Bennett has done throughout his career that have embraced both genres, in particular the revered piano jazz albums that he recorded with the late Bill Evans in 1975 and 1977.  Tony has become synonymous with the pop/jazz connection and in recent years has been a mentor to contemporary artists such as Lady Gaga and the late Amy Winehouse in encouraging them to embrace jazz music.  With his 90th birthday less than a year away, The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern defines what makes Tony Bennett unique in the pantheon of great singers and is a testament to the legacy that he continues to create as a recording artist and influence in the music industry.

Over the course of his career, Kern composed more than 700 songs, creating musical elements used in more than 100 stage works, collaborating with the greatest lyricists and librettists of the era including P.G. Wodehouse, Oscar Hammerstein II, Dorothy Fields, Johnny Mercer, Ira Gershwin, E.Y. Harburg and many others on a seemingly limitless repertoire of classic songs including "Ol' Man River," "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man," "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," "The Way You Look Tonight," "Long Ago and Far Away" and many more.

New York native Jerome Kern was a major force on Broadway and in Hollywood musicals in a career that spanned more than four decades. He expanded on earlier musical theater traditions, from vaudeville to operetta, to embrace new dance rhythms, syncopation and jazz progressions and helped invent the modern musical template. While many of his Broadway musicals and Hollywood musical films were contemporary smash hits, Kern is perhaps best remembered today through revivals of "Show Boat," one of his signature achievements.

In his liner notes for The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern, music historian Will Friedwald describes Kern as "...the key link between the great music of historical and contemporary classics, a direct connection between Brahms and Charlie Parker....a key architect of a uniquely American art form that would eventually take shape as musical theater....one of the founding fathers of a term that Tony Bennett later coined himself, 'the Great American Songbook.'"

"The idea of a Kern Songbook project was Tony's," writes Will Friedwald, "thereby placing Kern on the very short list of canonical composers (Rodgers & Hart, Harold Arlen, Duke Ellington, Irving Berlin, and Cy Coleman) who have been the beneficiaries of an entire album by Bennett. It was also Bennett's idea to create the album in collaboration with the remarkable Bill Charlap....who can also take a great song we all know by heart and make us feel like we've never heard it before."

With more than 700 Jerome Kern compositions to choose from, the set list for The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern is a distillation of essential highlights from a boundless catalog. With these interpretations of some of Jerome Kern's finest songs, Tony Bennett and Bill Charlap offer a definitive introduction to Kern's music while providing a deep understanding of the abiding and universal qualities of these songs.

Playing alongside Tony Bennett and Bill Charlap on The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern are pianist Renee Rosnes (on the piano duet pieces), Peter Washington (bass) and Kenny Washington (drums).  Unrelated, though sharing the same last name, Peter and Kenny have been performing with Bill Charlap for nearly two decades and pianist Renee Rosnes has been Charlap's life partner for close to 10 years.
