Jan 29, 2016 | The Piano Guys Release New Music Video "Hello/Lacrimosa" - A Mashup Featuring Adele's Hit Song And Mozart's Requiem

Jan 29, 2016

NEW YORK, Jan. 29, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Musical Internet sensation, The Piano Guys, who have surpassed 800 million views on YouTube, release their latest music video, "Hello/Lacrimosa."  The video can be viewed here.  The audio version is also available for purchase at all digital service providers.

In classic Piano Guys style, the video features a mashup of Adele's worldwide hit "Hello" and Mozart's beautiful requiem "Lacrimosa."  A blending of over 100 acoustic and electric cello tracks, the video was filmed at the Tuacahn Amphitheatre in Utah and incorporated many giant mirrors along with diffused light and cold fog to create the mysterious effects.

Of the new video Steven Sharp Nelson explains: "Hello/Lacrimosa" (or "Chello," as it has affectionately been called in the studio) is a musical experiment bridging 18th century spiritualism and 21st century secularism. Imagine Mozart and Adele in the same room in an intense co-write session, quill and pen in hand, respectively. Picturing this hypothetical hangout helped to spark the creative combination of the two. Both "Hello" and "Lacrimosa" have divergent traits which presented challenges. One wallows in a wide, painstakingly minor 12/8 time and the other drives a poignant bi-polar major/minor common time. One draws its power from the fullness of a grand chorus and orchestra, the other from the isolation of a lone voice and piano. One conforms to age-old counterpart canon and musical theory, while the other is conveyed via verse/chorus pop song parlance. However, they share the same fundamental feeling -- "Lacrimosa" (meaning "weeping" or "tearful") mournfully bemoans spiritual death, while "Hello" gripes about relationship regrets. Different centuries. Different realms. Same emotion. Perhaps we aren't as far from our predecessors as we think we are."

The Piano Guys – Steven Sharp Nelson, Jon Schmidt, Al Van der Beek and Paul Anderson – became an online sensation by way of their immensely successful series of strikingly original self-made music videos, which have surpassed 800 million views and garnered nearly 4.5 million subscribers on YouTube. They've made over 50 music videos since 2011, including their breakout hit, an innovative multi-handed version of One Direction's "What Makes You Beautiful" and a gorgeous reinvention of the hit song "Let It Go" from Disney's Frozen. To date, the Utah-based classical-pop group have released five major label albums on Portrait/Sony Music Masterworks: Wonders, The Piano Guys, The Piano Guys 2, a holiday album called A Family Christmas, and most recently The Piano Guys – Live! featuring live music from their sold out Red Rocks and Carnegie Hall concerts.

I Saw the Light (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) Available Digitally on Friday, March 25

"I Saw the Light," a Sony Picture Classics Film, Opening Nationwide Friday, April 1st

Jan 27, 2016

NEW YORK, Jan. 27, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, will release I Saw the Light (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) as a digital album on Friday, March 25.

I Saw the Light (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) is available for digital pre-order now at http://smarturl.it/ISTL_iTunes.

The official album of music from the highly-anticipated Hank Williams film biography--directed by Marc Abraham and starring Tom Hiddleston ("Midnight in Paris," "The Avengers") as Hank Williams and Elizabeth Olsen ("Avengers: Age of Ultron," "Godzilla," "Martha Marcy May Marlene") as Audrey Williams--I Saw the Light (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) premieres several newly recorded interpretations of classic Hank Williams tracks, performed for the film by Tom Hiddleston and the Saddle Spring Boys; these new versions of Hank Williams songs include "Hey Good Lookin'," "Move It On Over," "Jambalaya," "My Bucket's Got a Hole In It," "Why Don't You Love Me," and "Honky Tonkin'."

Rounding out the I Saw the Light (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) playlist are a variety of popular recordings contemporaneous to Hank's life and career, including Eddy Arnold's "Anytime" (1949), The Delmore Brothers' "Field Hand Man" (1951), Jo Stafford's "The Tennessee Waltz" (1950), Jimmy Liggins' "That's What's Knockin' Me Out" (1951), Eartha Kitt's "Santa Baby" (1953), George Morgan's "Please Don't Let Me Love You" (1949) and Emmett Miller's "Lovesick Blues" (1925), a show tune famously covered--and made a #1 Top C&W hit--by Hank Williams in 1949.

I Saw the Light (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) is produced by Rodney Crowell, G. Marq Roswell, Carter Little and Ray Kennedy. The album is Executive Produced by Marc Abraham, director/producer of "I Saw the Light" and author of the film's screenplay, and Brett Ratner.

"I Saw the Light" is based on the book "Hank Williams: The Biography" by Colin Escott, and William (Bill) MacEwen. The film is slated for release in in New York, Los Angeles and Nashville on Friday, March 25 and nationwide on Friday, April 1st.

In preparation for his role as Hank Williams in "I Saw the Light," Tom Hiddleston honed his singing and guitar skills working with country singer, executive music producer, and soundtrack album co-producer Rodney Crowell. "After nearly a month spent collaborating with this gifted artist, I'm as respectful of the man's work ethic as I'm mystified by his transformational skills," said Crowell. "Without a doubt, the filmmakers chose the right actor for the job."

The film chronicles country music singer/songwriter/performer Hank Williams' rise to fame, his personal and romantic trials, his conflicts and tribulations in a country music industry he helped define, and his sudden tragic death in the back of a limousine on his way to a gig on New Year's Day 1953.

"I Saw the Light" follows the journey of the iconic, tormented singer-songwriter who revolutionized country music with his raw charisma, haunting voice and original songs, most of which are considered American standards today and have been recorded many times over by pop, rock and country artists alike.

Williams emerged from the local Alabama music scene after World War II. His wife Audrey, despite an inequity in their respective talents, was desperate to sing with her husband and had fierce ambitions of her own. Hank's ability to write songs covering a wide range of emotions, using his own personal troubles as inspiration, became the essence of country music. In the end, he realized his dreams: hit records, a place on Nashville's prestigious stage and radio show the Grand Ole Opry and even guest spots on the then-new medium of TV.

Refusing to hide his longtime alcoholism and dependency on pain killers behind the wholesome facade Nashville and the Opry expects of its stars, Hank remained prolific and immensely popular until the very end of his life. Like Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and Kurt Cobain, Hank's star burned brightly, but briefly over the six years before he died, at the age of 29.

Today, country is arguably the most popular music in America, and Hank Williams had much to do with that.  The enduring quality of his character and his music earned him inductions into the Country Music Hall of Fame (1961), the Songwriters Hall of Fame (1970) and the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame (1987).  Williams had 33 hit country singles during his life; 30 reached the Top Ten; eight hit Number One.  Seven more Top Tens came after his death with three of these hitting Number One.

Jan 15, 2016 | Sony Classical Releases The 2016 New Year's Concert With The Vienna Philharmonic & Mariss Jansons

CD Now Available Exclusively at Amazon.com and ArkivMusic

Digital Download Available Now

CD Out Nationwide January 22, 2016

DVD and Blu-Ray Released February 5, 2016

Jan 15, 2016

NEW YORK, Jan. 15, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Classical is pleased to announce the release of the recording of one of the world's most famous classical music events: the 2016 New Year's Concert with the Vienna Philharmonic under the direction of Latvian conductor Mariss Jansons. The live recording is available now exclusively at Amazon.com and ArkivMusic.com and as a download through all major digital service providers.  The CD will be released nationwide on January 22.  The DVD and Blu-ray will be available on February 5.

Few other concerts can claim to generate such tremendous international interest as the New Year's Concert from Vienna. Under the direction of some of the leading conductors of our day the Vienna Philharmonic rings in the New Year with a gala concert that is broadcast from the magnificent setting of the Golden Hall in Vienna's Musikverein to over ninety countries around the world and watched by more than fifty million viewers. The 2016 New Year's Concert is conducted by the maestro Jansons, the third time that he has presided over this event. He made his acclaimed debut in 2006, before returning six years later for a concert that was described by the Viennese daily Der Kurier as "a red-letter day in the annals of music" and as "one of the finest concerts of recent decades," a concert worthy of being "ranked alongside the legendary New Year's Concerts under Karajan and Kleiber." Jansons made his debut with the Vienna Philharmonic in 1992, and since then he has been one of those select conductors with whom the orchestra feels a particularly close bond.

Until recently the program of the New Year's Concerts has tended to be a closely guarded secret and was often not divulged until a few days before the event, but in the case of the 2016 New Year's Concert it was revealed at an official press conference on November 30. In keeping with a long-standing tradition the program is made up of an ingenious mix of works by members of the Strauss dynasty (Johann Strauss I and II as well as Josef and Eduard Strauss) and their contemporaries. But on this occasion there are no fewer than eight works not previously heard within the framework of a New Year's Concert, namely, Robert Stolz's March of the United Nations, Carl Michael Ziehrer's waltz Weaner Mad'ln, Emil Waldteufel's waltz Espana, the Ball Scene by Josef Hellmesberger the Elder, two French polkas by Johann Strauss II (Violetta and Sangerlust), the Entr'acte Music from between Acts Two and Three of Furstin Ninetta, also by Johann Strauss II, and a polka by Eduard Strauss, Ausser Rand und Band. The New Year's Concert traditionally ends with a festive greeting and with three encores, the second and third of which have since 1958 been the Blue Danube Waltz by Johann Strauss II and the Radetzky March by Johann Strauss I.

At the same time, the New Year's Concert is celebrating its seventy-fifth anniversary. To mark the occasion, Sony Classical released a jubilee edition, The New Year's Concert: The Complete Works. This twenty-three-CD boxed set features all of the 319 works that have ever been played at a New Year's Concert, including twenty-five previously unreleased recordings from the archives of Austrian Radio, plus a bonus CD with thirteen brand-new recordings of works from the early years of the New Year's Concert when it was not yet recorded live.

The press conference was also an opportunity to announce a long-term extension of Sony Classical's partnership with the Vienna Philharmonic. This agreement provides for their continuing cooperation on the worldwide release and marketing of the New Year's Concert in all of its physical and digital formats. The partnership between the Vienna Philharmonic and Sony Classical is part of a great tradition dating back nearly thirty years – it was Sony Classical that released the legendary New Year's Concerts under Herbert von Karajan in 1987 and under Carlos Kleiber in 1989 and 1992.

For its part, the Vienna Philharmonic can trace back its roots to 1842, when Otto Nicolai conducted a Grand Concert involving "all of the orchestral players from the Imperial and Royal Court Opera." The event was initially described as a "Philharmonic Academy" and is generally seen as marking the birth of the orchestra. Since its formation, the orchestra has been run by a democratically elected committee uniquely responsible for all of its artistic, organizational and financial decisions. In the 20th century, the orchestra has worked closely with a number of eminent conductors – Richard Strauss, Arturo Toscanini, Wilhelm Furtwangler and, after 1945, its two emeritus conductors, Karl Bohm and Herbert von Karajan. The Vienna Philharmonic has given some 7,000 concerts on all five continents. Since 1989, it has performed a Philharmonic Week in New York and since 1993 it has given a similar series of performances in Japan.

The tradition of the New Year's Concert dates back to 1941. The first concert to mark the New Year took place in 1939, but on that occasion it was given on December 31. Its first conductor was Clemens Krauss, who was followed in 1955 by Willi Boskovsky. Boskovsky conducted the New Year's Concert no fewer than twenty-five times between then and 1979. The list of conductors who have presided over a New Year's Concert reads like a who's who of leading maestros. Televised lived for the first time in 1959, the New Year's Concert is regarded by the Vienna Philharmonic as a musical greeting to the world that is offered in a spirit of hope, of friendship and of peace at the start of the New Year. The recordings of the New Year's Concert are among the most important releases on the classical market and Sony Classical is keen to ensure that they are available to a broad, international audience.

Jan 13, 2016 | Jazz Singer Stacey Kent Releases New Album, Tenderly

Featuring Roberto Menescal - Album Available January 15, 2016

Performances in NYC at Birdland from January 19 - 23, 2016

Jan 13, 2016

NEW YORK, Jan. 13, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- "Life is the art of the encounter, though there are many failed encounters in life." Seldom has the Brazilian poet Vinicius de Moraes's philosophy been more fully realized than in this meeting of Roberto Menescal and Stacey Kent.

There are so many reasons why Stacey Kent and Roberto Menescal should never have met, let alone formed a friendship based on mutual admiration and shared artistic vision, that the very existence of this album, Tenderly (OKeh) available January 15, is close to miraculous.

Stacey Kent – for whom jazz and the "Great American Songbook" formed the musical wallpaper of her East Coast adolescence – viewed Brazilian music with much the same fascination as that with which Menescal had viewed American jazz a generation earlier. Each went on to become an important figure in their own musical sphere. Roberto Menescal began his musical journey in the 1950s as a student in Rio de Janeiro. As an admirer of the exotic sounds of American jazz and popular song, one of his early idols was the jazz guitarist Barney Kessel.

Born in South Orange, New Jersey, in 1968, Stacey Kent began her musical career as an interpreter of American standards, bringing her own unmistakable, intimate and emotionally intelligent style to a vast repertoire. A natural minimalist, she gained a legion of fans for her "less is more" approach. While her music has become increasingly involved with French and Brazilian influences, the same quiet intensity that characterized her interpretation of the "Great American Songbook" has continued to inform her singing.

Born in Espirito Santo in 1937, Roberto Menescal became one of Brazil's most important 20th-century musical figures. A composer, guitarist, founding father of Bossa Nova, record producer and winner of a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2013 Latin Grammy Awards, Menescal's importance to the history of Brazilian music from the late 1950s to the present day can hardly be overstated. That he remains as busy as ever – performing, composing and producing – is testament to his true passion for music.

The first step on the journey that led to the encounter between these two great artists was taken when the Brazilian DJ Bob Tostes, an aficionado of American jazz singers and a friend of Menescal, made a compilation of favorite singers for Menescal and his wife Yara. One track stood out for them: a recording of Gershwin's seldom played "Isn't It a Pity?" by Stacey Kent. In this recording Menescal recognized a quality that resonated for him: an emotional depth expressed with a quiet, un-dramatic intensity. This was a quality shared by some of the great Brazilian singers such as Nara Leao, with whom Menescal had enjoyed his closest working relationship. Yet here was an American singer displaying just such qualities.

Menescal made it his business to search out more of Stacey Kent's recordings, and quickly became such a fan of her work that, whenever he was producing a new, young singer, he would give them a selection of Kent's recordings with the instruction, "Listen to this and then we'll talk." However, despite his admiration, Stacey Kent remained merely a name on the sleeves of his treasured albums. Similarly for Stacey Kent, a fan of Brazilian music since her youth, the name Roberto Menescal was just a name on an album sleeve. The idea that they knew of each other had never occurred to either of them.

Fast-forward now to 2011 and the final step on that journey: an invitation to Stacey to sing at the Show de Paz, held in Rio de Janeiro to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Cristo Redentor, the famous statue of Christ the Redeemer atop Corcovado. Stacey had been invited by Brazilian singer-songwriter Marcos Valle to sing his classic "Samba de Verao." This was itself a meeting that would result in a close and enduring musical and personal friendship that has to date yielded a live album, many concerts and a DVD-in-the-making. But it was as Stacey was leaving the stage after her performance with Marcos that the encounter which led to this recording took place.

Menescal was to perform with the band Bossacucanova and was preparing to go on stage. In the bustle of the crowded backstage area, neither Kent nor Menescal had seen the running order or the artist list. And so it was that, on leaving the stage, Stacey spotted Roberto, guitar in hand. Already on cloud nine from her performance with Marcos, here was another idol! On the verge of stage-struck, she could say nothing other than "Roberto!" Menescal, similarly surprised but recognizing the singer from the covers of his cherished CDs, replied, "Stacey!"

Until that encounter, neither had any idea that each was aware of the other. A hurried exchange of email addresses in the wings sealed the friendship. Several subsequent meetings in Brazil and a regular exchange of emails and telephone calls allowed the new friends to make up for the lost years. For two artists of such remarkable empathy, a recording project was the next natural step.

Their first recorded collaboration was for Stacey's 2013 album The Changing Lights, which included Menescal's timeless classic "O Barquinho" and the Jim Tomlinson/Antonio Ladeira original "A Tarde," both with Roberto on guitar. Such was their musical empathy that further recordings were bound to follow.

Having devoured the recordings of Julie London and Barney Kessel in his youth, Menescal had always harbored a wish to record an album of standards along those lines. For Menescal, meeting Stacey was the chance to realize that life's ambition – and, beyond this, to record that album with his favorite standards singer. For Kent, it was the chance to work with a musical idol and one of the founding fathers of a genre that had completely informed her musical aesthetic.

With Stacey's husband Jim Tomlinson on saxophone and flute, and Jeremy Brown on bass, this intimate collection of songs is something of a homecoming for both Stacey and Roberto: for her, it is a return to the "Great American Songbook"; for him, it is a return to the jazz roots that inspired him as a young guitarist in the heyday of the Bossa Nova.

Despite their being separated by generations, continents, cultures and languages, that chance encounter in 2011 has resulted in some of the most distinctively focused and beautiful work in each of their careers. This album represents so much more than just the art of meeting. It is also truly the meeting of art.

Jan 12, 2016 | Legacy Recordings Set to Release Summertime: Willie Nelson Sings Gershwin on Friday, February 26, 2016

American Music Legend Awarded 2015 Gershwin Prize for Popular Song from Library of Congress

Jan 12, 2016

NEW YORK, Jan. 12, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Legacy Recordings is proud to announce the forthcoming release of Summertime: Willie Nelson Sings Gershwin on Friday, February 26, 2016.

Willie Nelson's new album of pop standards, penned by America's legendary songwriting duo George and Ira Gershwin, follows the selection of Willie as the 2015 recipient of the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. The first country artist ever to receive the distinguished Gershwin Prize, Willie Nelson was honored in November 2015 with a two-day celebration in Washington, DC, culminating in a star-studded tribute concert (scheduled for broadcast on PBS on January 15, 2016).

President Jimmy Carter, who was unable to attend the concert, wrote in a letter read by host Don Johnson to the crowd that Nelson's music has "enriched the lives of people far and wide for decades" and that the songwriter is truly worthy of this "prestigious and well-deserved award."

"To get a Gershwin award for anything is great but to get one for songwriting is especially great because Ira and George Gershwin were just fantastic writers. They wrote some of the greatest songs ever," said Willie Nelson in response to receiving the Gershwin Prize. "The Gershwin songs have been here for many many years. When I was just a small guy, I remember hearing all these great Gershwin songs and they'll be around forever because great music like that just does not go away."

Willie Nelson's distinctive down home delivery and heartfelt vocal stylings mesh perfectly with the exquisite construction, unforgettable melodies and sublime romance of the Gershwin brothers' songs especially selected for Summertime.

Among the 11 Gershwin classics recorded by Willie Nelson for his new album are two duets: "Let's Call The Whole Thing Off" with Cyndi Lauper (the song was originally introduced by Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in the 1937 film Shall We Dance) and "Embraceable You" with Sheryl Crow (the song was performed by Ginger Rogers in Girl Crazy, recorded by Billie Holiday in 1944 and inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2005).

Other songs on Summertime: Willie Nelson Sings Gershwin include: "But Not For Me" (written for Girl Crazy, Ella Fitzgerald's version won a Grammy in 1960); "Somebody Loves Me" (published in 1944, the song was a hit for The Four Lads in 1952); "Someone To Watch Over Me" (written in 1926 for Oh, Kay!, the song also closes out Willie Nelson's 1978 album Stardust); "It Ain't Necessarily So" (written for the Gershwins' 1935 pop/gospel opera Porgy and Bess); "I Got Rhythm" (the 1930s jazz standard written for Girl Crazy); "Love Is Here To Stay" (the last composition completed by George Gershwin before his death in 1937, the song serves as the main theme in An American In Paris and is a centerpiece of the Great American Songbook); "They All Laughed" (written for the 1937 film Shall We Dance); "They Can't Take That Away From Me" (written for the 1937 film Shall We Dance); and the immortal "Summertime" (an aria originally written for Porgy and Bess, "Summertime" has become one of the most covered songs in pop music history).

Summertime: Willie Nelson Sings Gershwin hearkens back to Stardust, the 1978 blockbuster album of pop standards that secured Willie's reputation as pop balladeer (in addition to his status as one of the architects of outlaw country music). Stardust peaked at #1 on Billboard ' s Top Country Albums and #30 on the Billboard 200. Stardust was on the Billboard ' s Country Album charts for ten years—from its release in April 1978 until 1988. In 2002, Stardust was certified quintuple platinum, and it was inducted in the Grammy Hall of Fame class of 2015.

Produced by Willie's friend and musical collaborator Buddy Cannon along with co-producer Matt Rollings, Summertime: Willie Nelson Sings Gershwin features musicians Matt Rollings (piano, B-3 organ, Wurlitzer), Jay Bellerose (drums), David Piltch (bass), Dean Parks (electric guitar, acoustic guitar), Paul Franklin (steel guitar), Kevin Smith (bass), Bobbie Nelson (B-3 organ, piano), Mickey Raphael (harmonica) and Willie Nelson (Trigger).

About Willie Nelson

In February 2012, Willie Nelson entered into an historic new record deal with Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, marking a label homecoming for Nelson, who, from 1975-1993, had cut a phenomenal string of top-selling singles and albums for Columbia Records, beginning with 1975's seminal smash Red Headed Stranger. New titles by the artist under the Legacy imprint will include newly recorded songs and performances as well as archival releases, personally curated by the artist, drawn from all phases of his career including his recordings for RCA Records and others.

Nelson's album releases for Legacy Recordings have included:

1) Heroes (2012), a collection of pop-country songs performed by Willie with an all-star roster of guest artists including Merle Haggard, Snoop Dogg, Kris Kristofferson, Billy Joe Shaver, Sheryl Crow, and Jamey Johnson as well as Willie's sons, Lukas Nelson and Micah Nelson;
2) Let's Face The Music And Dance (2013), a collection of new studio performances by Willie Nelson and Family;
3) To All The Girls... (2013), a collection of newly recorded duets with contemporary pop-country women singers including Dolly Parton, Mavis Staples, Sheryl Crow, Loretta Lynn, Wynonna Judd, Rosanne Cash, Alison Krauss, Miranda Lambert, Tina Rose, Carrie Underwood, Emmylou Harris, Norah Jones, Secret Sisters, Brandi Carlile, Lily Meola, Shelby Lynne, Melonie Cannon and Paula Nelson;
4) Band of Brothers (2014), featuring the artist's first batch of freshly penned original songs in nearly two decades
5) December Day: Willie's Stash, Vol. 1 (2014), the first installment of the Willie's Stash archival recordings series, the album features Willie Nelson and Sister Bobbie performing intimate new recordings of songs that informed their musical heritage.
6) Django and Jimmie (2015), a new full-length LP collaboration between American outlaw country music legends Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard, the album became the pair's first #1 Country Album chart-topper since 1983's Pancho & Lefty.

ET/PT on-air, on demand and over the internet.  After its premiere on SHOWTIME, it will be broadcast in territories around the world.

On February 26, during Black History Month, the Estate of Michael Jackson and Sony Legacy Recordings will release exclusive CD/DVD and CD/Blu Ray editions of Michael Jackson's revolutionary 1979 recording, Off The Wall. The package will include the original version of the album bundled with the new documentary Michael Jackson's Journey from Motown to Off the Wall, directed by Spike Lee

THE ALBUM – The importance of Michael Jackson's Off the Wall cannot be overstated.  Recorded when he was just 20 years old, the album heralded Michael's stunning emancipation as a singular musical force and creative visionary.  It smashed the ceiling on record sales for black artists, ushering in an exciting  new era of R&B-to-pop crossover airplay, chart, marketing and sales  trends not seen before in modern pop music.   It's the record that "invented modern pop as we know it," wrote Rolling Stone.  For fellow black artists of the day, Michael served as an illuminating inspiration.

To Black America, Off The Wall transcended music and entertainment altogether. The success of the album marked a level  of  national and international achievement  that conjured  pride  in a culture that as late as the end of the 1970s was still fighting for the kind of social acceptance that Michael's album received.   Because of Off the Wall's indelible influence, 21st century artists as disparate as Beyonce, Pharrell, Kendrick Lamar and The Weeknd all have a blueprint they turned to for creating their superstardom.

Written by Michael Jackson, the first single from Off The Wall, "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough", was Michael's first Grammy and first single to hit  #1 in the U.S. and internationally as a solo artist.  With the singles "Rock With You", "Off the Wall" and "She's Out of My Life" Jackson became the first solo artist in history to have four singles from the same album peak inside the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. The album was an enormous commercial success; as of 2014 it is certified eight times platinum in the United States and has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time.

The Music:  "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough"; "Rock With You", "Workin' Day and Night"; "Get on the Floor"; "Off the Wall"; "Girlfriend"; "She's Out of My Life";  "I Can't Help It"; " It's the Falling in Love"; "Burn This Disco Out".

THE DOCUMENTARY –   Produced by Spike Lee, John Branca and John McClain.  For Michael Jackson's Journey from Motown to Off the Wall, director Spike Lee assembles a wealth of archival footage, including material from Michael's personal archive, interviews with contemporary talents and family members, and Michael's own words and image to create this insightful chronicle from the star's early rise to fame through the release of this seminal album. A look at a chapter of his career that is rarely examined, Michael Jackson's Journey from Motown to Off the Wall allows audiences to travel with Michael as he gets his start at Motown, strikes a new path with CBS Records, and forges a relationship with legendary producer Quincy Jones. An illuminated portrait emerges of how an earnest, passionate, hard-working boy would become the "King of Pop."

Partial list of interviews:  Lee Daniels; The Weeknd; Pharrell Williams; Misty Copeland, Kobe Bryant; Mark Ronson;  John Legend;  Questlove;  Katherine Jackson; Joe Jackson, Marlon Jackson, Jackie Jackie  L.A. Reid and more.

Product Shot

ELVIS PRESLEY - THE ALBUM COLLECTION is available for pre-order now: http://smarturl.it/AlbumCollection_Amzn

Elvis Presley, the singer's first album for RCA Victor, was released on March 23, 1956, with its successor, Elvis, following in October 1956.  Both albums reached #1 on the US charts and achieved RIAA platinum status.

ELVIS PRESLEY - THE ALBUM COLLECTION includes album titles recorded by Elvis and released by RCA during the artist's lifelong association with the label.  The deluxe set features Elvis's fabled Sun Sessions (recorded 1954 and 1955 at Sun Studio in Memphis, prior to Presley's signing with RCA), his first RCA sessions (January 10, 1956), and significant official Elvis album releases including studio, soundtrack and live titles in addition to compilations featuring unreleased songs or tracks new to the LP format.

Highlights of ELVIS PRESLEY - THE ALBUM COLLECTION include: Elvis Presley and Elvis, the 1956 RCA studio album releases that rocketed Elvis into the pop culture stratosphere; all 17 of his film soundtrack LPs including Loving You, King Creole, G.I. Blues, Blue Hawaii, Roustabout and more; the 1969 American Sound session albums Elvis In Memphis and Back In Memphis; Elvis's stunning 1960s Nashville albums; the King's 1970s triumphant live concert recordings On Stage (1970), Elvis As Recorded Live At Madison Square Garden (1972) and Aloha From Hawaii Via Satellite (1973); compilation albums--including the Elvis' Golden Records series released between 1958 and 1968--offering many of Elvis' non-album hits; the rare RCA Camden "budget" series which feature songs recorded for Presley films but not included on the traditional soundtrack albums in addition to other hard-to-find material.

Original album packaging has been meticulously restored for each of the discs included in ELVIS PRESLEY - THE ALBUM COLLECTION.  Details include gatefold/die cut sleeves, original RCA Victor inserts and stickers, CD labels replicating original Side 1 labels and more.

The lavish ELVIS PRESLEY - THE ALBUM COLLECTION collector's box includes a 300-page fully illustrated hard cover book featuring insightful commentary penned by Elvis Presley scholar John Jackson, discographies and recording session details (dates, locations, personnel, etc.) and more.

The definitive treasure trove for seasoned fans or newcomers to these classic recordings, ELVIS PRESLEY - THE ALBUM COLLECTION presents Elvis and his music the way he was originally heard during his lifetime by contemporary audiences, through the medium of long-playing albums.  This 60th anniversary anthology lovingly compiles albums and compilations of new material released by RCA during Elvis's lifetime into the definitive Elvis Presley album library.

As an added bonus for Elvis fans, ELVIS PRESLEY - THE ALBUM COLLECTION includes three CDs of essential rare tracks, each volume devoted to one of the decades--the 1950s, the 1960s and the 1970s--transformed by the life and music of Elvis Presley, the King of Rock 'n' Roll.

The hits of Elvis Presley--33 No. 1 singles in the U.S. alone, which help account for worldwide sales in excess of 1 billion records--have become pop standards in their own right, recognized from generation to generation. But his 57 original LPs--studio and live albums, compilations of non-album singles, film soundtracks, and even budget albums with hard-to-find material--have been reissued only sparingly during the digital era. While several of Elvis's albums have been expanded and repackaged for Legacy Editions, themed box sets and other Elvis archival projects, ELVIS PRESLEY - THE ALBUM COLLECTION presents--for the first time, in many cases--Elvis's official, original albums as they were first released and designed to be heard.

Dec 07, 2015 | Tony Bennett and Bill Charlap Nominated for Grammy® Award in BEST TRADITIONAL POP VOCAL ALBUM for "THE SILVER LINING: The Songs of Jerome Kern"

"That Bennett can apply a lifetime of experience to this material, all the while showing a high degree of vocal control, makes this recording one for the ages." - CHICAGO TRIBUNE

"For Mr. Bennett, 89, it's terra firma, and a chance to show for the umpteenth time, that the old twinkle is intact." - THE NEW YORK TIMES

Dec 7, 2015

NEW YORK, Dec. 7, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- 18-Time Grammy Winner, Tony Bennett and jazz pianist Bill Charlap, were nominated for a Grammy in the Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album category for their jazz piano album, The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern Released in September 2015, the album debuted at #1 on Billboard's Traditional Jazz Album charts and has received widespread critical acclaim. It was the first recording Bennett released after the overwhelming success of his collaborative effort with Lady Gaga, "CHEEK TO CHEEK."  Bennett was also inducted into DOWNBEAT magazine's Hall of Fame and was named their top Male Vocalist of 2015.  Tony Bennett will celebrate his 90th Birthday next year on August 3rd.

Tony Bennett is the only artist to successfully bridge the worlds of pop music and jazz on an international scale for over 60 years. The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern becomes part of a timeless legacy of recordings that Bennett has done throughout his career that have embraced both genres, in particular the revered piano jazz albums that he recorded with the late Bill Evans in 1975 and 1977.  Tony has become synonymous with the pop/jazz connection and in recent years has been a mentor to contemporary artists such as Lady Gaga and the late Amy Winehouse in encouraging them to embrace jazz music.  With his 90th birthday less than a year away, The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern defines what makes Tony Bennett unique in the pantheon of great singers and is a testament to the legacy that he continues to create as a recording artist and influence in the music industry.

Over the course of his career, Kern composed more than 700 songs, creating musical elements used in more than 100 stage works, collaborating with the greatest lyricists and librettists of the era including P.G. Wodehouse, Oscar Hammerstein II, Dorothy Fields, Johnny Mercer, Ira Gershwin, E.Y. Harburg and many others on a seemingly limitless repertoire of classic songs including "Ol' Man River," "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man," "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," "The Way You Look Tonight," "Long Ago and Far Away" and many more.

New York native Jerome Kern was a major force on Broadway and in Hollywood musicals in a career that spanned more than four decades. He expanded on earlier musical theater traditions, from vaudeville to operetta, to embrace new dance rhythms, syncopation and jazz progressions and helped invent the modern musical template. While many of his Broadway musicals and Hollywood musical films were contemporary smash hits, Kern is perhaps best remembered today through revivals of "Show Boat," one of his signature achievements.

In his liner notes for The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern, music historian Will Friedwald describes Kern as "...the key link between the great music of historical and contemporary classics, a direct connection between Brahms and Charlie Parker....a key architect of a uniquely American art form that would eventually take shape as musical theater....one of the founding fathers of a term that Tony Bennett later coined himself, 'the Great American Songbook.'"

"The idea of a Kern Songbook project was Tony's," writes Will Friedwald, "thereby placing Kern on the very short list of canonical composers (Rodgers & Hart, Harold Arlen, Duke Ellington, Irving Berlin, and Cy Coleman) who have been the beneficiaries of an entire album by Bennett. It was also Bennett's idea to create the album in collaboration with the remarkable Bill Charlap....who can also take a great song we all know by heart and make us feel like we've never heard it before."

With more than 700 Jerome Kern compositions to choose from, the set list for The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern is a distillation of essential highlights from a boundless catalog. With these interpretations of some of Jerome Kern's finest songs, Tony Bennett and Bill Charlap offer a definitive introduction to Kern's music while providing a deep understanding of the abiding and universal qualities of these songs.

Playing alongside Tony Bennett and Bill Charlap on The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern are pianist Renee Rosnes (on the piano duet pieces), Peter Washington (bass) and Kenny Washington (drums).  Unrelated, though sharing the same last name, Peter and Kenny have been performing with Bill Charlap for nearly two decades and pianist Renee Rosnes has been Charlap's life partner for close to 10 years.

Much Anticipated Action-Adventure From Director Ridley Scott Also Lands In Movie Theaters Today

Songs From the Martian Encompasses Disco Era's Most Renowned and Beloved Cassics

Oct 2, 2015

NEW YORK, Oct. 2, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Columbia Records is releasing "Songs From The Martian" and "The Original Motion Picture Score" by composer Harry Gregson-Williams to the critically acclaimed and much anticipated movie "The Martian," available digitally today at iTunes here: Songs Album and Score.  A deluxe edition of the album, "The Martian Deluxe Soundtrack" (Songs Album and Score) is exclusively available at Amazon here. "The Martian" also opens nationwide today and features a star-studded cast, including Matt Damon in the lead role as Astronaut Mark Watney.

The '70s-laden album is comprised of some of the greatest classics from disco's golden era (tracklist below) including "Turn The Beat Around" (Vickie Sue Robinson), "Hot Stuff" (Donna  Summer), "Rock The Boat" (Hues Corporation), "Waterloo" (ABBA), and "I Will Survive"(Gloria Gaynor), and others.

The music evinces the plight of the film's protagonist, Astronaut Mark Watney, played by Matt Damon (the Bourne film series), who during a manned mission to Mars set in the not-too-distant future is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet with only meager supplies -  and limited distractions - including a playlist of '70's disco music left behind by Commander Lewis played by Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty, Interstellar).

Watney must rally his optimistic spirit, drawing upon his ingenuity and wit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. NASA and a team of international scientists race against the clock to bring "The Martian" home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible rescue mission. Based on a best-selling novel, and helmed by master director Ridley Scott, "The Martian" features a star studded cast that includes Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Pena, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Donald Glover, among others.

The Martian's original motion picture score is composed by Harry Gregson-Williams (The Shrek Franchise, Man On Fire, The Chronicles Of Narnia). Gregson-Williams also previously scored director Ridley Scott's 2005 movie Kingdom Of Heaven.

DARLENE LOVE'S ACCLAIMED NEW ALBUM 'INTRODUCING DARLENE LOVE' AVAILABLE EVERYWHERE TODAY

The Columbia Records/Wicked Cool release marks the first new full-length album of original pop songs in 27 years from the renowned vocalist, who has achieved legendary status for her enduring work with Phil Spector and as one of the most prolific backup singers of all time.  Now, with the spirited Love deservedly back in center spotlight, the album is being welcomed to worldwide acclaim: "Girl group royal takes back her throne," heralded Rolling Stone, "Love comes at it like a wrecking ball, husky alto thrillingly intact..."; "A stunning collection of vibrant, dramatic rock anthems and R&B workouts...' wrote Entertainment Weekly; "Love singing at maximum intensity..." noted the L.A. Times, with the above-mentioned NY Daily News praising the album as a "'soaring work" and revealing that "Love has lost none of her talents and has never sounded more unsinkable." Electric Review proclaims, "if you're too young to have experienced first-hand the excitement that came with hearing a new Darlene Love song ache through the jukebox or car radio, Introducing Darlene Love will cast you back to a place of innocence and faith, shepherding you back to a time when people gathered in the misty fields, steadfastly holding to the belief that music was about to change the world." Produced and arranged by artist/producer/E Street Band great Stevie Van Zandt, it's more than apparent that his heartfelt mission of re-introducing the irrepressible Love to the world in all her vocal splendor has been affirmed as a rousing success.

Hailed as "a splashy victory lap" by NPR's First Listen, the album is comprised of all new recordings and features never-before-heard and classic songs from a superstar cast of songwriters eager to join Van Zandt in honoring one of the seminal voices in music history.  The Elvis Costello-penned first single "Forbidden Nights" has also been embraced at radio and drawn raves, with Costello and Bruce Springsteen contributing two tracks each to the 14-song album (released on Van Zandt's Wicked Cool label in partnership with Columbia Records - see full tracklist below) with Stevie Van Zandt penning three songs.  Other writers include Jim Webb, Linda Perry, Desmond Child, Joan Jett, longtime songwriting team Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, and Michael Des Barres, and more. Various before mentioned songs have been championed across several channels at SiriusXM Radio with feature interviews running throughout release week. NPR's First Listen also praised the Van Zandt/Love chemistry on the album, citing the "dignity in Love's vocals amplified by Van Zandt's grand but well-modulated arrangements."

The irresistible video for the first single "Forbidden Nights" also premiered to an overwhelming response.  The jubilant clip catches the charismatic Love and pals cruising the beach sites of Asbury Park, N.J., and features inventive cameos including Costello himself, as well as Joan Jett, Paul Schaffer, Bill Murray, David Letterman, and hilarious glimpses of Van Zandt and buddy Bruce Springsteen.  Love and Van Zandt and a stage-full of musicians also rocked Asbury Park's Paramount Theatre live on September 12, reveling in a vibrant set of album selections kicking off Introducing Darlene Love's release as well as delivering torrid renditions of some of her back-classics.  Two more buzzed-about shows celebrating the album's release are on deck in L.A.'s famed Whisky A Go Go with the first show kicking off tonight.  Headliner Love and Little Steven & Friends will be rocking the bill September 18 and 20.

The captivating Love is sure to bring her iconic vocal rendering to the Whisky just as she does on the acclaimed new album. Songs on Introducing Darlene Love include "Night Closing In" (Bruce Springsteen,) "Still To Soon To Know" (Elvis Costello),"Love Kept Us Foolin' Around" (Linda Perry), "Who Under Heaven" (Jimmy Webb), "River Deep, Mountain High" (Phil Spector/Jeff Barry/Ellie Greenwich), and "Sweet Freedom" (Barry Man/Cynthia Weil), among others.

Inducted in to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2011, Love's five-decade career spans some of the greatest signature moments in music.  The Los Angeles native (Love currently resides in New Jersey) nurtured her talent early as a member of the Blossoms, a local trio who began their career providing backup vocals for artists such as Sam Cooke and Bobbie Day.  The Blossoms also were featured as part of the house band for the popular '60s music show Shindig, backing up many of the performers who appeared on the series.  Love would go on to become one of the most sought-after singers in music history, recording with Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, The Beach Boys, Dionne Warwick, The Righteous Brothers, Tom Jones, and dozens of other vocal giants throughout her career.  Her early work with pioneering producer Phil Spector on songs such as the trailblazing "He's A Rebel," "He's Sure The Boy I Love," and "Why Do Lover's Break Each Other's Hearts," would garner her legend status. She is featured in the 2013 Academy Award and Grammy winning documentary '20 Feet From Stardom,' chronicling the behind-the-scenes lives of background singers.   Darlene's annual holiday performance of her classic "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" on Late Night With David Letterman became a holiday viewing staple.

Following the enormous success of his #1, Grammy-Award winning album with Lady Gaga, Cheek To Cheek, this new release continues the classic series of Tony Bennett album releases celebrating the essentials of the Great American Songbook. The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern is an appreciation of the genius of Jerome David Kern (1885-1945), one of the 20th century's most important American composers of musical theater and popular music.

Tony Bennett is the only artist to successfully bridge the worlds of pop music and jazz on an international scale for over 60 years. The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern become parts of a timeless legacy of recordings that Bennett has done throughout his career that have embraced both genres, in particular the revered piano jazz albums that he recorded with the late Bill Evans in 1975 and 1977.

Friedwald writes about music and popular culture for The Wall Street Journal, worked with Tony Bennett on Tony's "The Good Life" memoir, and is author of eight books including the award-winning "A Biographical Guide to the Great Jazz and Pop Singers," "Sinatra! The Song Is You," "Stardust Melodies," and "Jazz Singing."

ABOUT TONY BENNETT:
Tony Bennett is an artist who moves the hearts and touches the souls of audiences. He's not just the singer's singer but also an international treasure honored by the United Nations with its Citizen of the World award, which aptly describes the scope of his accomplishments.

The son of a grocer and Italian-born immigrant, Anthony Dominick Benedetto was born on August 3, 1926, in the Astoria section of Queens, New York. He attended the High School of Industrial Arts in Manhattan, where he nurtured his dual passions, singing and painting. His boyhood idols Bing Crosby and Nat King Cole were big influences on Bennett's easy, natural singing style. Tony sang while waiting tables as a teenager then performed with military bands throughout his overseas Army duty during World War II. After the war, the GI Bill enabled him to study vocal technique at the American Theatre Wing School.

With worldwide record sales in the millions, Tony has received eighteen Grammy Awards including the prestigious Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. The MTV generation took to Tony Bennett during his appearance with the Red Hot Chili Peppers on the 1993 MTV Video Awards. He appeared on MTV Unplugged and the recording of the same name earned him the Grammy Award for Album of the Year. "Tony Bennett has not just bridged the generation gap," observed The New York Times, "he has demolished it. He has connected with a younger crowd weaned on rock. And there have been no compromises."

His initial fame came via a string of Columbia singles in the early 1950s, including such chart-toppers as "Because of You," "Rags To Riches" and a cover of Hank Williams' "Cold, Cold Heart." He has placed two-dozen songs in the Top 40, including "I Wanna Be Around," "The Good Life," "Who Can I Turn To (When Nobody Needs Me)" and his signature hit, "I Left My Heart In San Francisco." One of only a few artists to have albums chart in the 1950s, '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, and the new millennium, he's introduced multitudes of songs into the Great American Songbook that have become pop music standards. Upon the release of his boxed set collection, TONY BENNETT: THE COMPLETE COLLECTION, the New York Times commented, "we aren't likely to see a recording career like this again." Bennett made music history when he became the oldest artist at the age of 86 to achieve a #1 record on the Billboard charts with his DUETS II CD. He broke that record at the age of 88 when his collaborative album with Lady Gaga, CHEEK TO CHEEK, debuted at #1 on the Billboard Album charts. The album went on to win a Grammy Award and fostered a sold-out and critically acclaim world-wide concert tour. Tony Bennett is a Kennedy Center Honoree and an NEA Jazz Master, and a 18-time Grammy Winner. Tony has authored four books, his official biography, two books devoted to his artwork, and the latest New York Times Bestseller, Life Is A Gift.

Tony is a dedicated painter whose interest in art began as a child. He continues to paint daily, even while touring. He has exhibited work around the world, and three of his original paintings are part of the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC.

Throughout his career, Tony Bennett has always put his heart and time into humanitarian concerns. He's raised millions for the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. His original paintings each year grace the cover of the American Cancer Society's holiday greeting card. He received Martin Luther King Center's  "Salute to Greatness Award" for his efforts to fight discrimination, having marched with Dr. Martin Luther King in 1965. The United Nations presented him with their 2007 Humanitarian Award.

In honor of his great friend and staunchest supporter, Tony established the Frank Sinatra School for the Arts, which opened as a New York City public high school, offering an extensive arts curriculum, in September of 2001. In 2009, a permanent site for the school opened in Bennett's hometown of Astoria, Queens. With his wife Susan, they founded Exploring the Arts, which supports the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts and provides support to arts education in public schools.

ABOUT BILL CHARLAP:
One of the world's premier jazz pianists, Bill Charlap has performed with many leading artists of our time, ranging from Phil Woods and Tony Bennett to Gerry Mulligan and Wynton Marsalis. He is known for his interpretations of American popular songs and has recorded albums featuring the music of Hoagy Carmichael, Leonard Bernstein, George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers and Duke Ellington.

Dec 08, 2014 | The Last Internationale Guitarist Edgey Pires To Be Honored At 2014 PORTUGUESE-BRAZILIAN AWARDS

CEREMONY SET FOR DECEMBER 10 AT UNITED NATIONS HEAD OFFICE IN NEW YORK

Dec 8, 2014

NEW YORK, Dec. 8, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- In recognition of his artistic contributions and political activism, Guitarist Edgey Pires of The Last Internationale will be honored at the 2014 PORTUGUESE-BRAZILIAN AWARDS. The artist receives this esteemed honor amongst a total of 20 Portuguese and Brazilian actors, cultural influencers, journalists, and other trailblazers. The gala ceremony takes place at the United Nations head office in New York City on December 10, 2014.

Edgey graduated from college with a degree in Political Science and went on to write two books, Fighting for Freedom: Because A Better World is Possible (Planting Seeds Press) and Negative Dialectics: How to Accurately Interpret the World (unpublished). This marks a significant milestone for both Edgey and the critically acclaimed New York band.

"The UN is where Che Guevara delivered an incendiary speech against US imperialism. It is where Hugo Chaves, decades later, gave a similar speech in which he condemned 'the devil', George W. Bush, who had spoken from the same podium the day before. It is where KRS ONE went to get Hip Hop officially recognized as an international culture. It is where the Security Council vote on which poor, innocent people in remote parts of the world will get bombs dropped on their heads. It is outside of this building that I have held many banners and shouted for human rights and seen many of my fellow Comrades get tear-gassed, pepper-sprayed, beat and dragged off by police," said Edgey. "So when I found out that I was being given the Luso-Brazilian Award at the UN for my artistic achievements and social activism, I was as much shocked as I was honored to be included on the right side of this contentious history. Since the event falls on Human Rights Day, I will also be standing outside (once again) demanding that we get some human rights right here at home. I urge everyone from around the world to head out into the streets and fight for a different world."

During the evening, the PORTUGUESE-BRAZILIAN AWARDS bestows a statue and a diploma upon all honorees. The event aims to bolster and encourage Portuguese and Brazilian communities in the U.S. through recognizing the culture's luminaries and their respective contributions.

This news concludes a monumental year for The Last Internationale. They recently unveiled their star-studded music video for "A Wanted Man" and performed a powerful "Call For Action" show regarding Prop 47 in South Los Angeles. They are now gearing up to launch a campaign around the rising Student Debt Crisis. The band is passionate about this issue and is planning a more formal announcement early next year.

The Last Internationale first emerged in 2013 with their independent EP, New York, 'I Do Mind Dying. Legendary Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello made an introduction between Delila Paz and Edgy Pires and his longtime bandmate Brad Wilk. The drummer ended up joining the group, and they unleashed We Will Reign this past summer. They've performed on The Late Show with David Letterman and recently supported Robert Plant on tour.
