  • May 16

Original Programming to be Developed by Davidson and Mayer and Made Available Across a Variety of Podcast Platforms

NEW YORK – May 16, 2019 – Leading podcast developers Adam Davidson and Laura Mayer and Sony Music Entertainment today announced a new joint venture that will find and develop original podcast talent and programming. Davidson is the co-founder of NPR’s “Planet Money” and an award-winning contributor to “This American Life,” and Mayer is a top podcast and public radio producer formerly of Stitcher, Panoply Media, and WNYC among others.

The joint venture will create and distribute original scripted and unscripted programming across multiple podcast genres and subject matters. Based in Brooklyn, NY, Davidson and Mayer will lead the yet-to-be-named company and focus on cultivating dynamic talent and unique storytelling using Sony Music’s expertise in content creation and supporting new technologies for monetization.

Commenting on the deal, Davidson and Mayer stated, “It is a thrilling time to be in podcasting with major media and tech companies paying increasing attention to the industry as it quickly grows. Sony Music so impressed us with their focus on supporting artists and the creative process. They understand what it takes to attract the best people and create the conditions where they can do their best work.”

Rob Stringer, CEO, Sony Music Entertainment said, “Adam Davidson and Laura Mayer are acclaimed, visionary journalists and leaders in the podcasting industry and they share our creator-first approach to content development. We want to enhance opportunities for talented storytellers in this rapidly evolving audio entertainment segment. This partnership will help creators grow their brands and share their work with global audiences across a variety of services and platforms.”

There are more than half a million active podcast shows now in existence and, according to Edison Research, the number of Americans spending time listening to podcasts more than doubled over the last four years. With this increased activity, the need for services and solutions that can nurture and advance creativity, develop brands and maximize connections between content creators and audiences continues to grow.

The joint venture brings to the podcast community Davidson’s and Mayer’s expertise in identifying and developing premium content alongside Sony Music’s best-in-class capabilities in marketing, sales and distribution, business development, audio production, and data and analytics.

A leading broadcaster and podcasting voice, Davidson co-founded and co-hosted NPR’s “Planet Money,” after serving as the international business and economics correspondent for NPR. He also has been a frequent contributor to “This American Life” where his co-reporting on the episode “The Giant Pool of Money,” received the Peabody, DuPont-Columbia, and Polk Awards and was named one of the top works of journalism of the decade by New York University’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute. In addition, he served as a technical consultant to co-writer and director Adam McKay on the Academy Award-winning film “The Big Short.” Davidson and McKay also previously served as co-hosts of the Gimlet Media podcast “Surprisingly Awesome.” Davidson is a Contributing Writer for The New Yorker. Before that he was an economics writer for The New York Times Magazine.

Mayer started her career in radio as a producer across multiple shows at WNYC New York Public Radio including the “Fishko Files” and “On the Media,” an hour long program covering journalism and technology. She then joined podcast network Panoply Media where she served as the Managing Producer for all podcast production and launched dozens of shows and led the production of the first season of the podcast “Revisionist History.” Most recently, she was the Executive Producer for Show Development at Stitcher where she was responsible for the development, production and launch of new podcasts for the company’s comedy-focused Earwolf network and Stitcher label.

Kygo – and music manager Myles Shear, it was announced today. Under the strategic agreement, Sony Music, Kygo and Shear are launching Palm Tree Records, a new label imprint focused on identifying and cultivating emerging artistry in dance and electronic music.

Sony Music Entertainment Announces Global Partnership with Kygo and Manager Myles Shear for New Label, Palm Tree Records

The new partnership builds upon Sony Music’s successful existing relationship with Kygo and his manager Shear. Over his career, Kygo has amassed over 8.5 billion streams and over 47 million track equivalents worldwide.

The formation of Palm Tree Records with Sony Music is part of a broader strategy by Kygo and Shear to develop a full-service system for breaking new artists, which also includes a newly launched artist management company that the two have created in partnership together.

Said Rob Stringer, CEO, Sony Music, “We are thrilled to be expanding our successful relationship with Kygo and Myles. Said Kygo, “I’ve always been very fond of working with talented, undiscovered artists in my own releases. It’s been an amazing process to watch these artists grow and now I’m able to help projects I love by offering a label and management service with an incredible team.”

Said Shear, “We couldn’t be more excited to be growing our relationship with Rob Stringer, and all the great people in the Sony Music family through this new partnership. Kyrre and I wanted to create an outlet that would allow us to help break upcoming artists that we work with, as well as discover new talent that we believe in and want to develop. Palm Tree Records, together with our new management company, now gives us the perfect way to do that. As a manager, it’s a thrill to be realizing this vision with the partner who I’ve created everything with up to this point.”

He was crowned Spotify’s Breakout Artist of 2015, as songs including “Firestone (feat. Conrad Sewell)” and “Stole The Show (feat. Parson James)”, which was certified gold or platinum in sixteen countries, helped him become the fastest artist to reach 1 billion streams on Spotify. Kygo’s first album, Cloud Nine, debuted at #1 on the iTunes Dance Albums Chart and at #1 on Nielsen Soundscan’s Electronic Albums chart. The album received tons of positive attention from critics, including Rolling Stone, which called it “unfailingly gorgeous.” Kygo made his U.S. television debut on The Late Late Show with James Corden where he performed an acoustic version of “Stole The Show (feat. Parson James)”. He has also performed on Good Morning America, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

In 2016, Kygo landed on the cover of Billboard Magazine marking his colossal success. Later that year, he performed “Carry Me” at the Rio Olympic Closing Ceremony with singer-songwriter Julia Michaels, which was called “one of the biggest performances of his career.” Continuing his success, Kygo released “It Ain’t Me” with Selena Gomez, which reached Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and has amassed over 764 million Spotify streams to date. USA Today declared the song one of 2017’s most potent contenders for song of the summer, explaining that the tropical house-flavored beats “scream summer.” Kygo continued to take over 2017 by releasing his EP Stargazing, followed by his sophomore studio album, Kids In Love, an eight-track body of work. In addition, he announced his global Kids In Love tour starting in Helsinki, Finland and ending in Boston, MA, and he released “First Time” with Ellie Goulding, which charted at #1 on iTunes in 14 countries and debuted at #9 on the Billboard Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart; the music video has garnered over 71 million views.

NEW YORK, Jan. 12, 2018 /PRNewswire/ — Sony Music Masterworks recording artists, The Accidentals, are excited to unveil the music video for, “Earthbound,” via Baeble Music. The clip begins in what Sav describes as, a “lucid dream.” Isolated inside the walls of an abandoned psychiatric hospital, the separation from reality creates an atmosphere of hopelessness as the music explodes amongst Himalayan Salt Lamps and the fading light between the cracks in the boarded windows. A human connection to band members, Katie and Michael provide sanctuary, healing, and a way out.

“Everyone struggles with something at some point in their life,” multi-instrumentalist Sav Buist told Baeble. “‘Earthbound’ came from a darker place. It was part of the story and it was part of the healing. It goes out to the people who aren’t sure tomorrow can be better. It can. Making this video was therapeutic in a way. It was filmed in an abandoned psychiatric hospital whose focus was once to bring beauty from tragedy.”

Named one of Yahoo Music’s “Top 10 Bands to Watch in 2017,” The Accidentals have crafted a genre all their own, fusing elements of folk and pop into their signature sound. Comprised of multi-instrumentalists Sav Buist and Katie Larson, and joined on stage and in the studio by drummer Michael Dause, the band released their debut album, ODYSSEY, this summer on Sony Music Masterworks.

Since bonding during a high school orchestra event in their hometown of Traverse City, MI, The Accidentals have performed over a thousand live shows, including headline dates and festival sets, and shared stages along such like-minded acts as Martin Sexton, Brandi Carlile, Andrew Bird, The Wailers, Joan Baez and others. Their SXSW debut saw them hailed by Billboard for “displaying a genre-hopping range of influences and some smart songwriting skills to go with their abundant musical chops.”

Co-produced by Buist, Larson and Dause with engineer Jason Lehning (Mat Kearney, Guster, George Jones, Alison Krauss) at Asheville, NC’s Echo Mountain Recording, the album, ODYSSEY, includes the title track as well as singles, “Memorial Day” and “KW” (featuring Keller Williams). Other special guests on the album include Jenny Conlee (The Decemberists) and Kaki King. The Accidentals are celebrating ODYSSEY with a wide-ranging North American tour. Find the album ODYSSEY and tickets for their tour here
