Leiva joins the project and signs the original music

The 70th edition of the San Sebastian Festival will host the world premiere of cSINTIÉNDOLO MUCHO, the documentary film made by the filmmaker Fernando León de Aranoa after thirteen years accompanying Joaquín Sabina on and off stage.

Leiva closes the creative triangle of the film, composing the original music. The musician and producer, a close friend of Sabina, has been an important figure in Sabina’s musical composition and production in recent years. From his album Vinagre y rosas, to his latest album lo niego todo -as a producer-, as well as a regular partner and compositional tandem in his most recent publications.

The premiere of the film will take place at the Velodrome, one of the most popular sections of the event where, before 3,000 spectators and on a 400-meter screen, major premieres are projected.

SINTIÉNDOLO MUCHO marks León de Aranoa’s fourth appearance at the San Sebastián Festival. A fruitful link that began in 1998 with Barrio, a title for which he won the Concha de Plata for Best Director, and continued in 2002 with Los Lunes al Sol, which won the highest award, la Concha de Oro for Best Movie. In the last edition, in 2021, he was present with El buen patrón, winner of six goyas, among others, for the best film and the best direction.

The director has stated: “I am very excited to return to the San Sebastián festival after the experience with El Buen Patron last year. And to do it this time accompanied by musicians, Leiva and Joaquín. His music is part of my aesthetic and sentimental education. It’s not that I like it: it’s that I’m a member of it. The festival is going to be the last stage of a very exciting journey, which we started thirteen years ago.”

León de Aranoa, screenwriter, director and producer of fiction films such as El Buen Patrón(2021), Princesas (2005), Los Lunes al Sol (2002), Barrio (1998) or Familia (1996), which have been screened at festivals such as Cannes, Venice, Berlin and Sundance, and have achieved countless awards (among others, 24 Goya awards), he also has a committed and successful career as a documentary filmmaker. In 2001 he premiered Caminantes, a portrait of the Zapatista march to Mexico D.F. to claim the rights of the indigenous people that was awarded at festivals in Havana, Los Angeles or New York. And in 2007 he was part of los Invisibles as director of the chapter Buenas noches, Ouma, winner of the Goya Award for Best Documentary Film. They were followed by Política, manual de instrucciones (2016), witness to the birth of Podemos until its arrival at Congress, presented in Berlin and Toronto.

SINTIÉNDOLO MUCHO is a Reposado, BTF Media and Sony Music Spain production that reveals the authentic personality of one of the most important Spanish singers, composers and poets of recent decades and is the first work of its kind on Joaquín Sabina. A challenge that has been possible thanks to the close relationship, based on admiration and trust between the musician and the filmmaker.

SINTIÉNDOLO MUCHO is a raw portrait of Joaquín Sabina made inches away from him, with nocturnality and treachery, by his friend, the filmmaker Fernando León de Aranoa.

A story like his voice, harsh, direct and unmatched, which recounts without mitigating the intimacy of the artist, his backstage, the side no one knows about. That begins when he comes down from the stage, and accompanies him in the everyday, therefore in the unexpected: in laughter and drama.

SINTIÉNDOLO MUCHO is the result of thirteen years of filming together, and it covers all of Joaquín Sabina, public and private, luminous and hidden. A journey through the keys to his life and his work: what moves him, what inspires him, what hurts him, always developed from live, shared situations between musician and filmmaker.

Leiva se suma al proyecto y firma la música original

La 70ª edición del Festival de San Sebastián acogerá el estreno mundial de SINTIÉNDOLO MUCHO, la película documental realizada por el cineasta Fernando León de Aranoa tras trece años acompañando a Joaquín Sabina dentro y fuera de los escenarios.  

Leiva cierra el triángulo creativo de la película, componiendo la música original. El músico y productor, amigo íntimo de Sabina, es una constante en la composición y producción musical de Sabina en los últimos años. Desde su álbum Vinagre y rosas, hasta su último disco Lo niego todo -como productor-, así como partner habitual y tándem compositivo en sus publicaciones más recientes.

La premier del filme tendrá lugar en el Velódromo, una de las secciones más populares del certamen donde, ante 3.000 espectadores y en una pantalla de 400 metros, se proyectan grandes estrenos. 

SINTIÉNDOLO MUCHO supone la cuarta participación de León de Aranoa en el Festival de San Sebastián. Un fructífero vínculo que comenzó en 1998 con Barrio, título por el que el que obtuvo la Concha de Plata al Mejor Director, y continuó en 2002 con Los lunes al sol, que se alzó con el máximo galardón, la Concha de Oro a la Mejor Película. En la pasada edición, en 2021, estuvo presente con El buen patrón, ganadora de seis goyas, entre otros, a la mejor película y la mejor dirección.

El director ha declarado: “Me hace mucha ilusión volver al festival de San Sebastián después de la experiencia con El buen patrón, el año pasado. Y hacerlo esta vez acompañado de músicos, de Leiva y de Joaquín. Su música forma parte de mi educación estética y sentimental. No es que me guste: es que milito en ella. El festival va a ser la última etapa de un viaje muy emocionante, que comenzamos hace ya trece años.”

León de Aranoa, guionista, director y productor de películas de ficción como El buen patrón (2021), Princesas (2005), Los lunes al sol (2002), Barrio (1998)o Familia (1996), que se han exhibido en festivales internacionales como los de Cannes, Venecia, Berlín o Sundance, y han conseguido infinidad de reconocimientos (entre otros, 24 premios Goya), también tiene una comprometida y exitosa trayectoria como documentalista. SINTIÉNDOLO MUCHO es un retrato de Joaquín Sabina sin bombín, hecho a muy pocos centímetros de su piel, con nocturnidad y alevosía, por su amigo, el cineasta Fernando León de Aranoa.

Un relato como su voz, áspero y sin ecualizar, que cuenta sin atenuantes la intimidad del artista, sus bambalinas, su cara B. Que comienza cuando baja del escenario, y le acompaña en lo cotidiano, y así en lo inesperado: en la risa y en el drama.

SINTIÉNDOLO MUCHO es el resultado de trece años de rodaje juntos, y recorre todos los escenarios de Joaquín Sabina, públicos y privados, luminosos y ocultos. Un paseo por las claves de su vida y de su trabajo: por lo que le mueve, por lo que le inspira, por lo que le duele, desarrollado siempre a partir de situaciones vivas, compartidas, entre músico y cineasta.
