First Time Recording Between Marsalis Quartet and Elling
Apr 15, 2016
NEW YORK, April 15, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- It is no secret that the Branford Marsalis Quartet can be as freewheeling off the bandstand as in performance. Saxophonist Marsalis, and his Quartet made up of pianist Joey Calderazzo, bassist Eric Revis and drummer Justin Faulkner are each bold personalities with strong opinions, equally intense in both musical and verbal exchanges. "The band talks about all kinds of things, many of which are unprintable," Marsalis admits. "But we have serious musical debates as well." One of these exchanges led to Upward Spiral, the new album from the Branford Marsalis Quartet with special guest Kurt Elling. The album will be released via Marsalis Music via OKeh Records on June 10, 2016.
"One topic we got into was picking the best singer to work with our band," Marsalis recalls. "My candidate was Kurt Elling, because he has the most flexible voice around, is always in tune and is a true jazz musician. When I met Kurt two years ago at a Thelonious Monk Institute competition, we had a conversation at the bar about doing a record together."
"I had bumped into Branford on the road a handful of times, and we always had significant conversations," Elling adds. "So when he mentioned making a record, I said 'any time!'"
What has emerged, after an intense week of performance and recording in New Orleans, is a collection that blends Songbook staples, jazz standards, and standards-to-be from a diverse array of composers.
The goal from the outset was to create a true partnership. "I usually reject the word `collaboration,'" Marsalis explains, "because it implies a third thing from that which each collaborator does well. I don't need a collaborator to do what I normally do, and Kurt doesn't, either. But this time, none of us were going to do what we normally do. The goal here, even though he sings lyrics, was to highlight Kurt's voice as an instrument."
Elling was more than prepared for the challenge. "I love singing with a hard-hitting band," he confirms. "I didn't want Branford's band to feel that it had to hold back because a singer was there. To be welcomed into the Quartet's circle, which is all about new challenges and hard blowing, was very important to me. When I asked Branford what to bring about a week before the date, he said `Don't worry, you've got the thing.' So I brought `the thing.'"
Choosing songs became a process in which all five musicians had input. "Everyone in the band is always listening to all kinds of music," Marsalis emphasizes, "so it's not as if we had to go out and do research on vocal records.
"For example, I had been listening to the Oscar Brown song `Long as You're Living' for two years before the date. The first time I heard Sting's `Practical Arrangement,' I called him and asked for a lead sheet, because I wanted to play that song with the quartet even before the idea of recording with Kurt came up. I also chose `Só Tinha de Ser Com Você,' a Jobim song that has not been done to death. I told everyone to study Elis Regina's version, because I wanted us to sound authentic rather than generic. Doing `Blue Gardenia' was my idea, while Eric originally suggested Chris Whitley's `From One Island' when we were talking about more recent songs.
Elling also brought ideas and songs to the partnership. He suggested "Doxy," the Sonny Rollins classic with lyrics that Mark Murphy introduced; "West Virginia Rose," with music and lyrics by pianist Fred Hersch; and "Momma Said," with the quartet responding spontaneously in the studio to the Calvin Forbes poem.
Two classic ballad performances complete the collection. "Kurt had wanted to do `Blue Velvet,' using Bobby Vinton's hit version as a starting point," Marsalis recalls. "I said that I'd write it out, but Kurt said, `No, I want us to sound like ghosts, with just enough technique to get the message across.' He also wanted to do a voice/tenor duet, which I was originally against, but we tried `I'm a Fool to Want You' and he was right. When you have a singer who can inhabit the emotional space, it works."
Every track on Upward Spiral confirms the beyond-category strengths of both the Quartet and Elling. "No one in the band had to make adjustments, because good musicians can play many styles of music," Marsalis notes. "We're fully engaged with one another when we're playing, so it was easy to engage with Kurt. The only adjustment was not to play long solos, but if making the music sound good means playing less, you play less."
Elling adds that "My thing is always about tailoring what I do to the vision and personality of the band, and Branford's quartet is a real working band, which is both an incredible luxury and incredibly important for the music. They provided everything on a silver platter."
For Marsalis, Upward Spiral is consistent with all of his previous music. "My philosophy of jazz is that it should be about strong melodies and a great beat, and every song here has a melody that you can hold in your mind, that you can sing. This is not jazz as a personal think tank, where people are only concerned with impressing everyone already inside of the tank with deconstruction and reharmonization. This is the kind of music that should expand our base to include people who would like jazz if it were friendlier. From the minute Kurt started performing with us, it was all good."

Deluxe 43-CD Box Set Includes Legendary Live Recordings from the RCA and Columbia Archives, Plus a 104-page Hardcover Book
Apr 15, 2016
NEW YORK, April 15, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Ever since its opening night in May 1891, Carnegie Hall has held sway as the undisputed shrine of classical music in America. It was and remains the essential venue for all great artists. To celebrate Carnegie Hall's 125th anniversary, Sony Classical in partnership with Carnegie Hall is proud to present an extraordinary new 43-CD box set of treasures from the RCA and Columbia archives featuring live recordings from many of the world's greatest musicians. Available April 29, this unique deluxe edition contains a complete previously unreleased piano recital by Sviatoslav Richter and is accompanied by a 104-page coffee table book, which includes notes by Director of Carnegie Hall's Archives Gino Francesconi as well as many facsimile documents and photographs.
This recorded chronicle of eight decades spotlights many of the artists who enjoyed historically close ties to Carnegie Hall. It begins with two performances of Beethoven's Fifth, from 1931 and 1933 by Arturo Toscanini and continues with a performance from 1934 in which Serge Koussevitzky conducts Roy Harris's First Symphony, among the first works by an American-born composer to be recorded by a major orchestra. It was one of some 115 important compositions – by Debussy, Ravel, Stravinsky, Bartók and others – that Koussevitzky and the BSO gave their US premieres at Carnegie Hall.
But it is really the soloists, especially the great pianists, who have played the principal role in establishing the hall's unique reputation. A landmark in its history took place and was recorded in 1943. Vladimir Horowitz joined his father-in-law Toscanini and the NBC Symphony Orchestra in an all-Tchaikovsky program to help raise money for the war effort. Their sensational performance of the Piano Concerto No. 1 has been inducted into the Grammy® Hall of Fame.
In 1958, a 23-year-old Texan pianist named Van Cliburn astonished the world by beating out eight Soviet pianists to win the first International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. After he had played Rachmaninoff's Third Concerto, conducted by the illustrious Kirill Kondrashin, the audience leapt to its feet and gave the pianist an eight-minute standing ovation. A few weeks later, Cliburn, again partnering with Kondrashin, recaptured the sensation he made in Russia with this Carnegie Hall performance of "Rach 3".
The first US tour by Sviatoslav Richter in 1960 culminated at Carnegie Hall in the towering, previously unreleased all-Beethoven recital contained here. From 1961, Sony has included excerpts of two Chopin evenings given by another keyboard icon, Arthur Rubinstein, 55 years after his Western-hemisphere debut at this same hall. Another famous, if not infamous, evening occurred in 1962, when Glenn Gould's "unorthodox" interpretation of the Brahms D minor Concerto was disavowed by conductor Leonard Bernstein before their performance with the New York Philharmonic. (Bernstein's witty prefatory remarks to the audience are heard here along with the concerto).
Another highlight in Carnegie history was Horowitz's legendary return to the hall in 1965. Other great recitals in the new set include the U.S. debut recital of Canadian pianist Ronald Turini from 1961, those given by Jorge Bolet in 1974, Rudolf Serkin's from 1977, Lazar Berman's from 1979, Evgeny Kissin's US recital debut from 1990 and Arcadi Volodos's Gramophone award-winning recital from 1998. There's also a wonderful 1972 organ recital by the charismatic Virgil Fox – including his charming spoken introductions to each piece – as well as a major violin-piano recital, Midori's Carnegie solo debut from 1990.
Carnegie Hall has also been a mecca for famous singers ever since Adelina Patti, one of the most celebrated sopranos of the 19th century, made her debut there in 1893. The year 1955, in which Kirsten Flagstad and Beniamino Gigli both mounted their US farewells at Carnegie, also featured a return recital by the great Swedish tenor Jussi Björling. When he came out on stage for the recital, Björling was given a welcome described as being of "football stadium proportions." Always a New York favorite, Björling's Carnegie recital from 1958 is included here as well.
Leontyne Price, who made her Carnegie debut with the Boston Symphony in 1954, singing music by her close associate Samuel Barber, gave her solo recital debut in 1965, included here. The beloved American soprano, who appeared more than 40 times at Carnegie Hall, is also heard in a recital from 1991. Other great American vocal artists in the Sony Classical compilation include Shirley Verrett in a recital from 1965, Jennie Tourel accompanied by Leonard Bernstein in 1969, Kathleen Battle and Frederica von Stade in a 1991 Christmas concert conducted by André Previn, as well as Marilyn Horne's 60th-birthday celebration from 1994, featuring the great mezzo herself along with Renée Fleming, Ruth Ann Swenson, Helen Donath and their distinguished Spanish colleague, Montserrat Caballé.
Another birthday celebration graces this set: the 85th of Carnegie Hall in May of 1976. Hailed as the "Concert of the Century", this truly once-in-a-century event brought together a clutch of the most iconic names in classical music: Mstislav Rostropovich, Vladimir Horowitz, Leonard Bernstein, Yehudi Menuhin, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and, not least, Isaac Stern, who 16 years earlier had mounted a successful campaign to save the hallowed hall from demolition. Together with the New York Philharmonic – which had presented the world premiere of Dvořák's "New World" Symphony at an early Carnegie Hall appearance in 1893 – and the Oratorio Society of New York, the organization for which the hall was principally conceived and which was heard at all but one of the opening week concerts in 1891, these great artists paid a fitting tribute to New York's classical music shrine. The same may be said of Sony Classical's 43-CD set of legendary Carnegie Hall live recordings.

Available in 2CD or 3LP Configurations, 2016 Legacy Edition of Everybody's in Show-Biz Debuts Previously Unreleased Studio and Live Tracks from 1972
Apr 12, 2016
NEW YORK, April 12, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- RCA/Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, will release a newly expanded edition of Everybody's In Show-Biz, The Kinks' 1972 album masterpiece, on Friday, June 3.
First released in August 1972, Everybody's In Show-Biz was The Kinks' tenth studio album, arriving within a year of the acclaimed Muswell Hillbillies (the group's debut album for RCA Records). The original double-LP Everybody's In Show-Biz contained a complete studio album (which premiered the all-time Kinks classic "Celluloid Heroes" among other tracks) and a live disc chronicling The Kinks' Carnegie Hall appearance in March 1972.
The 2016 Legacy Edition of Everybody's In Show-Biz includes the original album, produced by Raymond Douglas Davies, in its entirety alongside a full disc's worth of previously unissued studio sessions outtakes (recorded for the album in 1972 at Morgan Studios, Willesden, London) and live material (recorded March 2-3, 1972 during The Kinks' triumphant Carnegie Hall concert run).
The new edition of Everybody's In Show-Biz includes in-depth liner notes penned especially for this release by noted rock scholar David Fricke.
A concept album of sorts, Everybody's In Show-Biz drew its themes and inspirations from the trials, tribulations and triumphs of life as a touring musician. (The raucous Carnegie Hall recordings on the album come from one of the first North American concerts performed by The Kinks after the lift of a four-year ban imposed on the group by the American Federation of Musicians in 1965.) The songs on Everybody's In Show-Biz were initially intended to serve as the soundtrack to The Colossal Shirt, a never-realized feature film about The Kinks on the road.
"Life keeps using me, keeps on abusing me, mentally and physically," Davies sings on the album's "Maximum Consumption." "I gotta stay fit, stay alive, need fuel inside, eat food to survive…." Stylistically, Everybody's in Show-Biz finds Davies further exploring his interest in Americana-inspired musical arrangements as heard on Muswell Hillbillies.
Everybody's In Show-Biz showcases the second great classic Kinks line-up: frontman Ray Davies, guitarist Dave Davies, bassist John Dalton, keyboardist John Gosling and drummer Mick Avory, joined by brass and woodwind players Mike Cotton, John Beecham and Alan Holmes (all of whom played on Muswell Hillbillies).
The Carnegie Hall recordings include a variety of Kinks originals in addition to unconventional covers including "Mr. Wonderful" (from the Sammy Davis Jr.-led musical of the same name), the 1920s popular standard "Baby Face" (made famous by Al Jolson) and "The Banana Boat Song" (a calypso-folk perennial popularized by Harry Belafonte).
The new Legacy Edition of Everybody's In Show-Biz includes never-before-heard live versions of "Sunny Afternoon," "Get Back in Line," "Complicated Life" and the rarely-played "Long Tall Shorty" as well as alternate versions of "Supersonic Rocket Ship," "Unreal Reality" and the debut release of "History," which foreshadowed The Kinks' next concept album, 1973's Preservation Act 1.

Called "one of R&B's most elegant accessories to seduction" in the New York Times earlier this year, Maxwell returns to the themes of love and relationships on "Lake By The Ocean." "Heartbreak is always at the core of most of the things I write," he says. "The song is about a vast unfettered love deeply connected to the intimacy one is able to share with another after a time of great struggle and betrayal. It's an expression of cleansing and escape, a washing away of the past and joining forces in love with the beauty of romance, nature and the earth."
"Lake by the Ocean," written and produced by Musze and his longtime collaborator Hod David, is a classic-sounding Maxwell hit - an elegant, slinky, yearning song that echoes his 2009 smash "Pretty Wings" or his early hit "Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder)."
blackSUMMERS'night is Maxwell's first album in seven years. It is the second installment in a musical trilogy that began with 2009's platinum-selling, BLACKsummers'night, which debuted at #1 and was one of the year's most critically lauded releases. The new album comes 20 years after his genre-defining debut, Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite.
The singer and songwriter recorded blackSUMMERS'night in New York over the last several years. "I'm working with all of the same people on the new album. It's always been a family type of thing, and I think that that's what, maybe, has made it special. It feels, to me, even better than what we did twenty years ago," he said recently.
Maxwell redefined classic soul music in April of 1996 when he released his critically acclaimed debut on Columbia, Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite. It earned Grammy nominations, double platinum status and RIAA gold for the single, "Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder)." The platinum albums Embrya (1998) and Now (2001) followed. After eight years, 2009's BLACKsummers'night debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and won two Grammys, including Best R&B Album. To date, Maxwell has achieved 13 gold and platinum certifications from the RIAA.
Maxwell will announce summer tour dates on April 11 at http://www.musze.com/.

12-song collection spotlights compositions from great American songwritersinterpreted by Dylan through his singular talents as a vocalist, arranger and bandleader
Apr 7, 2016
NEW YORK, April 7, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Columbia Records confirmed today that a new studio album from Bob Dylan, Fallen Angels, will be released on May 20. Featuring twelve classic American tunes written by some of music's most acclaimed and influential songwriters, the album showcases Dylan's unique and much-lauded talents as a vocalist, arranger and bandleader. The Jack Frost-produced album is the 37th studio set from Bob Dylan and marks the first new music from the artist since Shadows In The Night, which was released in early 2015.
One of the album's recordings, "Melancholy Mood" is available today on iTunes as an Instant Gratification track, and will also be released as part of a four-track 7" EP on April 16 as part of the nationwide Record Store Day. The track can also be streamed via a "Vinyl Video" on YouTube: http://smarturl.it/melancholymood. Fallen Angels is now available for pre-order on iTunes, Amazon and Barnes & Noble. The album will also be available May 20 in a limited blue vinyl edition exclusively at Barnes and Noble.
On Fallen Angels, Dylan has chosen songs from a diverse array of writers such as Johnny Mercer, Harold Arlen, Sammy Cahn and Carolyn Leigh to record with his touring band. The album was recorded at Capitol Studios in Hollywood in 2015.
The artist's previous album of classic American songs, 2015's Shadows In The Night, reached the Top 10 in seventeen countries, including #7 in the U.S., with #1 debuts in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Sweden and Norway. The album also received worldwide critical acclaim, with The Telegraph's Neil McCormick giving the album five out of five stars and describing the work as "spooky, bittersweet, mesmerizingly moving" with "the best singing from Dylan in 25 years." Jon Pareles wrote in the New York Times, "Mr. Dylan presents yet another changed voice…a subdued, sustained tone….Shadows in the Night maintains its singular mood: lovesick, haunted, suspended between an inconsolable present and all the regrets of the past."
Bob Dylan's six previous studio albums have been universally hailed as among the best of his storied career, achieving new levels of commercial success and critical acclaim for the artist. The Platinum-selling Time Out Of Mind from 1997 earned multiple Grammy Awards, including Album Of The Year, while "Love and Theft" continued Dylan's Platinum streak and earned several Grammy nominations and a statue for Best Contemporary Folk album.
Modern Times, released in 2006, became one of the artist's most popular albums, selling more than 2.5 million copies worldwide and earning Dylan two more Grammys. Together Through Life became the artist's first album to debut at #1 in both the U.S. and the UK, as well as in five other countries, on its way to surpassing sales of one million copies. Tempest received unanimous worldwide critical acclaim upon release and reached the Top 5 in 14 countries, while Shadows In The Night was hailed by fans and critics for Dylan's singular interpretive artistry.
These six releases fell within an 18-year creative span that also included the recording of an Oscar- and Golden Globe-winning composition, "Things Have Changed," from the film Wonder Boys, in 2001; a worldwide best-selling memoir, Chronicles Vol. 1, which spent 19 weeks on the New York Times Best Seller List, in 2004, and a Martin Scorsese-directed documentary, No Direction Home, in 2005. Bob Dylan also released his first collection of holiday standards, Christmas In The Heart, in 2009, with all of the artist's royalties from that album being donated to hunger charities around the world.
In recent years, Bob Dylan was the recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States' highest civilian honor. He was awarded a special Pulitzer Prize in 2008 for "his profound impact on popular music and American culture, marked by lyrical compositions of extraordinary poetic power." He was also the recipient of the Officier de la Legion d'honneur in 2013, Sweden's Polar Music Award in 2000, Doctorates from the University of St. Andrews and Princeton University, as well as numerous other honors.

The Highwaymen--Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson--were country music's first bonafide "supergroup," an epic quartet of blockbuster star power comprised of the four prime forces of America's outlaw country music revolution. An essential musical and cultural influence, the Highwaymen were active for the decade spanning 1985 to 1995, recorded three major label albums, charted hit singles (including their Number 1 debut, "Highwayman," which won the Best Country Song Grammy Award in 1986) and performed a variety of shows achieving mythic status for those lucky enough to have been there.
"There's the four of us standing there, grouped around microphones. The Highwaymen. John, Kris, Willie, and me. I don't think there are any other four people like us," wrote Waylon Jennings in Waylon: An Autobiography. "John says that we came together because we all have a life commitment to the music. We know the same songs, but we sing them from different perspectives. We can blend the early country of the Carter Family with Texas swing, southern gospel, and rockabilly, and each of us feels comfortable singing real slices of life. There's not one of us who hasn't come face to face with his own mortality, and many's the time we've gone through our struggles and survivals together....That's our friendship, unlocking any door that stands between us, and it keeps four very different individuals together."

Recording Featured on Release of New Jeff Buckley Collection, "You & I" Released on Columbia/Legacy Recordings on March 11
Mar 28, 2016
NEW YORK, March 28, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Columbia/Legacy Recordings announced today the release of a groundbreaking new music video for the Jeff Buckley recording of Bob Dylan's "Just Like A Woman." The recording is featured on You and I, a new collection of the very first studio recordings made by Jeff Buckley for Columbia Records that was released on March 11.
The video for "Just Like A Woman" is available at http://smarturl.it/jb_jlaw_intld?IQid=pr.jb #InfiniteStory
The animated video, created with next generation interactive media and technology company Interlude in collaboration with Blind design studios, takes viewers on a journey that they control through a relationship between a man and woman. Set to Buckley's stirring rendition of the Dylan classic, viewers click on a scroll of animated cels to decide the fate of the two—sometimes the woman is alone, sometimes the man is alone, sometimes they are together in love, and sometimes they are together in misery.
Along the way the video offers the option of creating a unique mix of the song, from Buckley's original solo performance on vocals and guitar, to a piano, to a full orchestration and a choir. Each choice alters the mood of the story and adds new emotional dimensions to the experience.
All together there are over 16,000 different music combinations that can be created. The video contains 73 different animated cells that can be clicked or tapped to alter the story, adding up to a staggering number of possible visual and story combinations: approximately 1 sexdecillion. That's a 1 followed by 51 zeros.
Adam Block, President, Legacy Recordings, said, "Jeff Buckley fans have always felt a strong personal connection with his music, which should be especially true with the incredibly intimate recordings on You and I. We hope this video will be a moving way to extend that personal connection by allowing people to express themselves and how the song makes them feel in almost endless ways."
"Buckley's performances are emotional and complex," said Yoni Block, Interlude CEO and co-founder. "Buckley fans, of which we have many at Interlude, understand the depth of this emotion. The goal of this video is for both existing and new fans to enjoy many ways of experiencing the music and for each individual audience member to return over and over to be involved with the emotion differently each time."
Greg Gunn, Creative Director of Blind said, "It was an exciting challenge to make something so visually compelling and to know that people will be completely immersed in this unique experience."
The video is available natively on iPhones/iPads and includes an option at the end to create a unique poster with all the cell combinations chosen by the user, which can be shared on social media.
This is the second time that Legacy Recordings and Interlude have collaborated on an interactive video for a Bob Dylan song. The first was the official video for "Like a Rolling Stone" which was hailed for being "brilliant," (Rolling Stone), "insanely cool" (Digg.com), and a "masterpiece" (Wired).
You and I is a collection of 10 tracks (most of them cut in Steve Addabbo's Shelter Island Sound studio in February 1993) that have gone virtually unheard for more than two decades. Recently discovered in the Sony Music archives during the research for the 20th anniversary edition of Buckley's Grace album, the performances on You and I are a revelation, an intimate portrait of the artist performing a variety of cover songs and original music expressing a range of emotion channeled through his singular sensibility.

ALG to Source Licensing Opportunities and Strategic Partnerships for the Dean Martin Brand
Mar 24, 2016
NEW YORK, March 24, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The Dean Martin Family Trust has appointed Artist Legacy Group, a Sony Music Entertainment joint venture, to act as its global brand representative, it was announced today by ALG CEO Ashley Austin.
ALG will collaborate with the Dean Martin Family Trust to create and maintain cohesive licensing and branding strategies, ensuring the integrity of Dean Martin's singular persona as pop culture's ultimate "King of Cool."
On behalf of the Trust, ALG will source licensing opportunities and strategic partnerships for the Dean Martin brand across a variety of categories including--but not limited to--luxury apparel and accessories, food and beverage, fragrance and skin care, home décor and lifestyle goods.
Under the new arrangement, ALG is positioned to foster the growth of Dean Martin's trademark and personality rights--including his name, likeness and signature--in branded merchandise, endorsements and advertising campaigns.
"ALG will work closely with the Trust to pursue licensing and branding initiatives on behalf of Dean Martin, complementing the projects that the Trust is currently developing," said Austin. "Our mission is to fully serve Dean's existing fanbase while simultaneously introducing him to younger generations of fans who will undoubtedly respond to his timeless class and style."
"The Dean Martin Family Trust is very excited to be working with ALG to continue spreading the excitement and debonair lifestyle of one of the world's most versatile and beloved entertainers," said Laura Lizer, Trustee of the Dean Martin Family Trust. "His charisma and masculine style has bridged generations and continues to make him the definitive 'King of Cool.'"
Sony Music Entertainment ("SME") and Artist Legacy Group, LLC ("ALG") entered into a groundbreaking joint venture agreement in October 2015. The venture, which operates under the ALG name, engages in all business aspects of artist brand management including licensing, branding strategy and merchandising. ALG provides artist and estate brand management services to Legacy Recordings and other front line SME labels while remaining open to opportunities outside the SME eco-system.
This new arrangement is the next step in Legacy's existing relationship with the Dean Martin Family Trust; in January 2014, Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, in partnership with the Dean Martin Family Trust, acquired the singer's legendary Reprise Records catalog and began remastering titles for a major ongoing reissue project. The Dean Martin Reprise catalog acquisition included all the recordings Dean made during his extraordinary creative tenure (1962-1974) at Rat Pack pal Frank Sinatra's Reprise Records label. The Nashville Sessions, the album Martin cut for Warner Bros in 1983, was also included.

'FULL CIRCLE' Earns Loretta Lynn Her Highest-Ever Chart Debut On Billboard 200
Mar 23, 2016
NEW YORK, March 23, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The new music video for "Lay Me Down" -- a duet from Loretta Lynn's new album, FULL CIRCLE, sung with Willie Nelson -- reunites two of music's greatest living legends on stage for the first time in more than 30 years. The video was released today and is available at http://smarturl.it/ll_lmd_yt?IQid=pr.ll
"Lay Me Down," written by Mark Marchetti, is a poignant reflection on life while contemplating one's mortality. The video, directed by David McClister, features Lynn and Nelson, each alone, singing the song within the backstage halls and dressing rooms of the Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, TN. Eventually they join each other on stage in the empty auditorium for a heartfelt and intimate meeting of two old friends.
The last time the two appeared on stage together was at the Farm Aid benefit concert in 1985.
Loretta Lynn said of their reunion, "I am so proud to be able to sing a song with my friend, Willie. I love this song, 'Lay Me Down,' so much. It had been 30 years since we'd last seen each other. Willie and I got to meet and talk about old times when we shot the music video in Nashville. Willie is one of those people that even if you haven't seen them for 30 years you feel like it was just yesterday. We have a natural respect and love for each other."
Willie Nelson said, "I'm excited to have a new record and video out with Ms. Loretta Lynn, who is one of the few remaining traditional country artists, and one of my favorite people. She's an original!"
FULL CIRCLE, produced by Patsy Lynn Russell and John Carter Cash, and recorded at the Cash Cabin Studio in Hendersonville, Tennessee, takes listeners on a journey through Loretta's musical story, from the Appalachian folk songs and gospel music she learned as a child, to new interpretations of her classic hits and country standards, to songs newly-written for the project. Released on March 4 through Legacy Recordings, FULL CIRCLE has also earned the music legend her highest-ever chart debut on the Billboard 200, entering at #19. The album has already been garnering glowing reviews: NEW YORK TIMES chief pop music critic Jon Pareles praised Lynn's work saying, "she continues to draw lessons from a life in which hard work, talent, instinct and stubborn determination have sustained her for more than 50 years as a country star."
Lynn is also scheduled to return to the stage of Nashville's Grand Ole Opry for two shows on Saturday, March 26. The Opry legend marked her 50th anniversary as an official Opry member in 2012. Fans can tune in to the Opry broadcasts on 650 AM WSM, (flagship home of the Opry), opry.com, the Opry's mobile app, and SiriusXM Satellite Radio.
Loretta Lynn has been inducted into more music Halls of Fame than any female recording artist to date, has earned four Grammy Awards, Kennedy Center Honors and a Presidential Medal of Freedom, and sold more than 45 million records worldwide.

Dec 7, 2015
NEW YORK, Dec. 7, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- 18-Time Grammy Winner, Tony Bennett and jazz pianist Bill Charlap, were nominated for a Grammy in the Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album category for their jazz piano album, The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern. Released in September 2015, the album debuted at #1 on Billboard's Traditional Jazz Album charts and has received widespread critical acclaim. It was the first recording Bennett released after the overwhelming success of his collaborative effort with Lady Gaga, "CHEEK TO CHEEK." Bennett was also inducted into DOWNBEAT magazine's Hall of Fame and was named their top Male Vocalist of 2015. Tony Bennett will celebrate his 90th Birthday next year on August 3rd.
Tony Bennett is the only artist to successfully bridge the worlds of pop music and jazz on an international scale for over 60 years. The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern becomes part of a timeless legacy of recordings that Bennett has done throughout his career that have embraced both genres, in particular the revered piano jazz albums that he recorded with the late Bill Evans in 1975 and 1977. Tony has become synonymous with the pop/jazz connection and in recent years has been a mentor to contemporary artists such as Lady Gaga and the late Amy Winehouse in encouraging them to embrace jazz music. With his 90th birthday less than a year away, The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern defines what makes Tony Bennett unique in the pantheon of great singers and is a testament to the legacy that he continues to create as a recording artist and influence in the music industry.
Over the course of his career, Kern composed more than 700 songs, creating musical elements used in more than 100 stage works, collaborating with the greatest lyricists and librettists of the era including P.G. Wodehouse, Oscar Hammerstein II, Dorothy Fields, Johnny Mercer, Ira Gershwin, E.Y. Harburg and many others on a seemingly limitless repertoire of classic songs including "Ol' Man River," "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man," "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," "The Way You Look Tonight," "Long Ago and Far Away" and many more.
New York native Jerome Kern was a major force on Broadway and in Hollywood musicals in a career that spanned more than four decades. He expanded on earlier musical theater traditions, from vaudeville to operetta, to embrace new dance rhythms, syncopation and jazz progressions and helped invent the modern musical template. While many of his Broadway musicals and Hollywood musical films were contemporary smash hits, Kern is perhaps best remembered today through revivals of "Show Boat," one of his signature achievements.
In his liner notes for The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern, music historian Will Friedwald describes Kern as "...the key link between the great music of historical and contemporary classics, a direct connection between Brahms and Charlie Parker....a key architect of a uniquely American art form that would eventually take shape as musical theater....one of the founding fathers of a term that Tony Bennett later coined himself, 'the Great American Songbook.'"
"The idea of a Kern Songbook project was Tony's," writes Will Friedwald, "thereby placing Kern on the very short list of canonical composers (Rodgers & Hart, Harold Arlen, Duke Ellington, Irving Berlin, and Cy Coleman) who have been the beneficiaries of an entire album by Bennett. It was also Bennett's idea to create the album in collaboration with the remarkable Bill Charlap....who can also take a great song we all know by heart and make us feel like we've never heard it before."
With more than 700 Jerome Kern compositions to choose from, the set list for The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern is a distillation of essential highlights from a boundless catalog. With these interpretations of some of Jerome Kern's finest songs, Tony Bennett and Bill Charlap offer a definitive introduction to Kern's music while providing a deep understanding of the abiding and universal qualities of these songs.
Playing alongside Tony Bennett and Bill Charlap on The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern are pianist Renee Rosnes (on the piano duet pieces), Peter Washington (bass) and Kenny Washington (drums). Unrelated, though sharing the same last name, Peter and Kenny have been performing with Bill Charlap for nearly two decades and pianist Renee Rosnes has been Charlap's life partner for close to 10 years.

Songs From the Martian Encompasses Disco Era's Most Renowned and Beloved Cassics
Oct 2, 2015
NEW YORK, Oct. 2, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Columbia Records is releasing "Songs From The Martian" and "The Original Motion Picture Score" by composer Harry Gregson-Williams to the critically acclaimed and much anticipated movie "The Martian," available digitally today at iTunes here: Songs Album and Score. A deluxe edition of the album, "The Martian Deluxe Soundtrack" (Songs Album and Score) is exclusively available at Amazon here. "The Martian" also opens nationwide today and features a star-studded cast, including Matt Damon in the lead role as Astronaut Mark Watney.
The '70s-laden album is comprised of some of the greatest classics from disco's golden era (tracklist below) including "Turn The Beat Around" (Vickie Sue Robinson), "Hot Stuff" (Donna Summer), "Rock The Boat" (Hues Corporation), "Waterloo" (ABBA), and "I Will Survive"(Gloria Gaynor), and others.
The music evinces the plight of the film's protagonist, Astronaut Mark Watney, played by Matt Damon (the Bourne film series), who during a manned mission to Mars set in the not-too-distant future is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet with only meager supplies - and limited distractions - including a playlist of '70's disco music left behind by Commander Lewis played by Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty, Interstellar).
Watney must rally his optimistic spirit, drawing upon his ingenuity and wit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. NASA and a team of international scientists race against the clock to bring "The Martian" home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible rescue mission. Based on a best-selling novel, and helmed by master director Ridley Scott, "The Martian" features a star studded cast that includes Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Pena, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Donald Glover, among others.
The Martian's original motion picture score is composed by Harry Gregson-Williams (The Shrek Franchise, Man On Fire, The Chronicles Of Narnia). Gregson-Williams also previously scored director Ridley Scott's 2005 movie Kingdom Of Heaven.
