Mar 19, 2015 | Sony Music to purchase remaining interest in The Orchard, the world’s leading independent digital distributor
NEW YORK—March 19, 2015—Sony Music Entertainment today announced that it has entered into an agreement with Dimensional Associates, LLC to acquire the remaining interest in The Orchard, the global independent music, video and film distribution company. The Orchard will continue to operate separately from Sony Music and will be led by its existing executive team. The deal is aligned with Sony Corp.’s recently announced strategy identifying Sony Music as one of its growth businesses. Sony plans to proactively invest in and implement a variety of measures to promote growth across its entertainment businesses, including music. The Orchard is focused on providing world-class digital distribution services for content creators including independent labels and filmmakers.  It offers clients an end-to-end solution for music and video delivery to hundreds of services and digital storefronts worldwide, as well as efficient and transparent reporting of sales and revenue. The sales, digital marketing and business development offerings also included in The Orchard’s suite of services have helped it outpace the industry in growing revenue for its clients. Sony Music became the majority investor in The Orchard in March 2012 following the merger of The Orchard with IODA, a Sony Music-owned digital distribution company. At that time, The Orchard became the digital distributor for RED and select catalogues from Sony Music affiliates outside of the U.S. This investment in The Orchard will allow Sony Music to further enhance its relationships with distribution clients all over the world.  It also will allow the companies to work more closely together to drive improvements throughout the digital supply chain and quality of revenue reporting.  Sony Music remains committed to operating The Orchard independently with the goal of improving the revenue and profitability of its distribution clients. Largest Collection Of Historical Recordings Ever Made Publicly Available Online   The Library of Congress and Sony Music Entertainment today unveiled a new website of over 10,000 rare historic sound recordings available to the public for the first time digitally. The site is called the “National Jukebox” (www.loc.gov/jukebox/). Developed by the Library of Congress, with assets provided by Sony Music Entertainment, the National Jukebox offers free online access to a vast selection of music and spoken-word recordings produced in the U.S. between the years 1901 and 1925. The website was launched at a Library news conference featuring an appearance by Grammy-winning pianist, singer and actor Harry Connick, Jr.  The Columbia recording artist performed the song “I’m Just Wild About Harry,” which is on the site performed by composer Eubie Blake. “This amazing collection is a chance to hear history,” said Librarian of Congress James H. Billington, who joined Connick and officials of Sony Music Entertainment at the press event.  “This collection includes popular music, dance music, opera, early jazz, famous speeches, poetry and humor.  It is what our grandparents and great-grandparents listened to, danced to, sang along with.  This brings online one of the most explosively creative periods in American culture and music and one of the finest additions to the Library's American Memory materials.” “We are thrilled to be joining with the Library of Congress to launch the National Jukebox,” said Richard Story, President, Commercial Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment. “As the steward of much of the output from the American recording industry prior to 1934, Sony Music is excited to preserve and share online these important cultural treasures from its archives with students, historians, and music-lovers alike, and create new audiences for and appreciators of the many extraordinary works from the pre-1925 era.” The agreement for the National Jukebox grants the Library of Congress usage rights to Sony Music’s entire pre-1925 catalog—comprising thousands of recordings produced by Columbia Records, OKeh, and Victor Talking Machine Co. among others – and represents the largest collection of such historical recordings ever made publicly available for study and appreciation online. Works by Fletcher Henderson, Al Jolson, George M. Cohan, Eddie Cantor, Will Rogers, Alberta Hunter, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Leopold Stokowski, Arturo Toscanini, and opera stars Enrico Caruso, Nellie Melba and Geraldine Farrar are all covered, as are such original recordings as the Paul Whiteman Concert Orchestra's “Rhapsody in Blue” with George Gershwin on piano, and Nora Bayes' “Over There.” Visitors to The National Jukebox will be able to listen to available recordings on a streaming-only basis, as well as view thousands of label images, record-catalog illustrations, and artist and performer bios. In addition, users can further explore the catalog by accessing special interactive features, listening to playlists curated by Library staff, and creating and sharing their own playlists. At launch, the National Jukebox will feature recordings exclusively from Sony Music’s Victor Talking Machine Co. catalog, and include songs and other materials such as the Original Dixieland Jazz Band performing “Livery Stable Blues”—considered the first jazz recording ever released—Lena Wilson singing “T’aint Nobody’s Biz-ness If I Do” (1923), and the famed Ziegfeld Follies star Fannie Brice singing “My Man.” In addition, the collection will include early jazz, many blues songs and novelty songs meant to evoke laughter (such as the 1908 “Cat Duet” that simulated the sounds of cats yowling in the night), and recordings made for distinct ethnic groups, such as Irish songs or home-nation music beloved by immigrants to the U.S. Not just limited to music, users also can access political speeches by Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, William Jennings Bryan and William Howard Taft, recitings of famous popular poems such as “Casey at the Bat” and “Wynken, Blynken and Nod,” readings from the Bible and early sound-effects records such as a collection of snores and sneezes. The website will showcase special interactive features as well, including a digital facsimile of the 1919 edition of the famous opera guide “Victrola Book of the Opera,” which describes more than 110 operas, including illustrations, plot synopses and lists of recordings offered in that year.  Features include the book’s original text, a comparison of the different interpretations of the most popular arias of the period, and streamed recordings of nearly every opera referenced in the book. The National Jukebox additionally will include playlists annotated by Library staff, focusing on different genres, time periods, themes and artists. Users also will be able to create their own playlists to post on their own webpages and social networking sites or submit them to the Library for posting on the National Jukebox site. Other features include pages of background information on both the creation of the National Jukebox and audio-preservation practices. The recordings featured in the National Jukebox were made using what is known as the acoustical process, which predates the use of microphones.  Speakers spoke into, or singers sang into, cones which vibrated an attached diaphragm and stylus, etching sound waves onto a rotating wax disc. These original discs later could be converted into masters used to mold the records sold for home use. Metadata for the website’s Victor content will be cataloged and controlled by comprehensive discographic data compiled by the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) for their online “Encyclopedic Discography of Victor Records” (https://victor.library.ucsb.edu/).  The Library’s association with UCSB will provide users with an easily searchable database of every recording in the National Jukebox. “This represents a strong step in the Library’s efforts to return out-of-circulation recordings to public access,” said Gene DeAnna, head of the Library’s Recorded Sound Section.  “Sony Music’s commitment to making its recordings more accessible is unprecedented.  We will seek additional donors and contributors in an effort to develop the most comprehensive website of historic sound recordings and related interpretive content.” Founded in 1800, the Library of Congress is the nation’s oldest federal cultural institution. April 11, 2008 — Sony/ATV Music Publishing and SONY BMG MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT today announced that they have reached an agreement covering digital royalty collection for the music publisher across Asia. The agreement encompasses China, Hong Kong, India (extending to include a mechanical rate for physical goods there), Indonesia, Malaysia, The Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand, but specifically excludes Japan and Korea where local deals are already in effect. The new agreement is designed to expand legitimate digital activities across the region, while at the same time protecting the rights of artists, songwriters, record companies, music publishers, and collection societies. Among the offerings incorporated under the arrangement are mobile products such as master ring tones, ring back tones and full track downloads, and online products such as audio and video downloads, as well as subscription and streaming services. The agreement is designed to simplify current royalty collection arrangements and expand and develop online and mobile markets in the region. The agreement also calls for a single publishing royalty rate for the use of all underlying copyrights. Yende was born in 1985 in the small remote town of Piet Retief, about three hundred miles from Johannesburg. At the age of sixteen, her life was transformed by hearing the "Flower Duet" from Delibes's opera Lakmé on a British Airways television commercial. On learning that this haunting music was opera, she decided at that moment to abandon her plans to become an accountant and train to become an opera singer instead. Soon she gained a scholarship to study at the South African College of Music in Cape Town with Professor Virginia Davids, the first black woman to appear on opera stages during the apartheid years in South Africa. With Davids's help, Yende's extraordinary talent blossomed and she was taken from a childhood in a remote village in South Africa to all of the major opera stages of the world.

Besides the much-loved Lakmé duet (performed with mezzo Kate Aldrich) which first opened her heart to the world of opera, her debut recording includes the touching scene "Vous que l'on dit" from Rossini's Le Comte Ory. In this opera, Yende gained dazzling international recognition when she replaced Nino Machaidze and starred opposite Juan Diego Flórez at her last-minute Metropolitan Opera debut in New York in January 2013. Her appearance in Le Comte Ory was received with rapturous acclaim and became a major turning-point in her career. "Her voice has a luminous sheen combined with steely resolve … she delivered some of the most difficult coloratura passages with scintillating precision," said The New York Times. Immediately afterward, she stepped in for an indisposed Cecilia Bartoli in the same role at the Theater an der Wien.

Another opera close to her heart is Gounod's Roméo et Juliette. Her connection with the character of Juliet clearly runs deep, for she sang Juliet's "Je veux vivre" with such passion and conviction at the illustrious Belvedere Singing Competition in Vienna in 2009 that she became the first artist ever to win first prize in every single category. Yende's performance of the so-called "Poison Aria," recorded on her debut album, also led to her acceptance on the acclaimed young artists' program at La Scala. Shortly after, in 2010, she made her stage debut there.

With "Ah, la pena" from Bellini's Beatrice di Tenda, Yende continued her success at international competitions. This time, she stole the show in Plácido Domingo's renowned Operalia Competition in 2011: again, she was the first singer in history to receive not only the first prize but also the prize of the public and the Zarzuela prize. Plácido Domingo raved that "it was instantly clear to everyone there that she was ready for the world's greatest stages. She has an extraordinarily beautiful voice with a phenomenal technique, and she lights up the stage with charisma."

A particularly significant and moving event for the young singer came when she returned to her homeland in 2013 to sing the title role in Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor in Cape Town. From this opera, she has chosen the much-loved aria "Regnava nel silenzio." The recording also includes Rossini's famous "Una voce poco fa" from Il barbiere di Siviglia (the opera of her Paris Opéra debut). Pretty makes yet another debut when she sings the role of Elvira from Bellini's I puritani, the last track on her album, in Zurich in 2016.

Yende has already appeared at major opera houses in Berlin, New York, Los Angeles, Barcelona, Hamburg and Paris, and has frequently sung at her 'home theatre' of La Scala. Forthcoming seasons will also see her appear at the Bayerische Staatsoper Munich, the Royal Opera House in London, the Opéra National de Paris and the Metropolitan Opera.

Having composed the music for more than 130 film and television productions, including dozens of the most memorable and successful films of the past three decades, James Horner was one of the world's most prolific and celebrated film composers. Horner earned two Academy Awards and two Golden Globe Awards for his music for James Cameron's Titanic (Best Original Score and the Best Original Song "My Heart Will Go On"), eight Academy Award nominations, five Golden Globe nominations, and won six Grammy awards. In addition to composing music for film, Simon has over four hundred music credits working with pop, classical, and R&B artists, such as Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, Celine Dion, Luciano Pavarotti and Madonna.  Franglen was also commissioned to compose a sky-breaking, 3-dimensional immersive symphonic suite for the Shanghai Tower, which is the tallest building in Asia.  Simon has an impressive career, working with Hollywood's most renowned composers, including John Barry, Howard Shore, Thomas Newman, Alan Silvestri, and most notably James Horner.  Franglen and Horner had a very close working relationship, having collaborated on major films such as Titanic, Avatar, The Amazing Spider-ManKarate Kid and Southpaw. About his work on The Magnificent Seven, Franglen says: "Composer James Horner was a close friend and music hero of mine. I was fortunate to work on at least a dozen of his films, including the monumental Titanic and Avatar. In the Spring of 2015, as we finished the score to Southpaw, director Antoine Fuqua and James were engaged in discussions about The Magnificent Seven, which was to be their next collaboration. In approaching The Magnificent Seven, James knew he'd have to write a score that related to Elmer Bernstein's much-loved theme for the 1960 original, but he also knew that the film scoring language of that older film was not going to work in this modern retelling of Akira Kurosawa's masterpiece Seven Samurai. The challenges energized James; we met in London and he excitedly started working on themes while Antoine was beginning to film with his remarkable cast in Louisiana. A week later tragedy struck. James died in a private plane accident.

We were devastated. In the aftermath, I couldn't stop thinking about the powerful themes that were James' final compositions. It seemed inconceivable that this music would never be heard. I was not alone with those thoughts. James' trusted group of collaborators (including music editors Jim Henrikson and Joe E. Rand, and orchestrator J.A.C. Redford) were unanimous in encouraging [James' longtime music scoring engineer] Simon Rhodes and me to finish prepping the London themes so they could be presented to Antoine. A couple weeks later I was on the set of The Magnificent Seven playing the music to the astonished director, who was overwhelmed by this unexpected gift from his departed friend, a gift that so perfectly 'got' the essence of the movie that Antoine was making, without having ever seen a frame of it.

From there, it was a nine-month process of finishing the film and the score, with all the filmmakers and musicians coming from a place of love and respect for James' music. I hope you can hear the outpouring of goodwill that everyone involved has shown, from the passion that the orchestra put into every note, to the support that Antoine, Roger Birnbaum and MGM have shown throughout the process. I believe that the music as it has been completed reflects James Horner's spirit. As you listen, remember James, and as he would have always insisted, hear the soul of the film in the score."

The concert took place at the Three Mills Island Studios in East London on Friday 11 October, 1996 and featured George playing ten of his finest songs from the Wham!, Faith, Listen Without Prejudice Vol.1 (Freedom '90) and Older eras in an intimate setting.  Listen Without Prejudice Vol 1 will also be reissued on vinyl and digital.

Listen Without Prejudice Vol 1. was George's second solo album. Arranged, produced and almost completely written by George himself, it eloquently confirmed him as a pioneering, agenda-setting artist. 

The staggering success of George's first solo album Faith resulted in him becoming one of the few artists who could shift millions of albums worldwide.  This, of course, was a dream scenario for the label but George had different plans.  Unable and unwilling to be a 24-hour pop star, constantly in the media spotlight, George felt he needed to follow his artistic instincts regarding how his work should be presented. He decided he would not appear on Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1's album cover or be available to physically promote the album beyond select interviews, but instead gave the label the David Fincher-directed Freedom! '90, which featured five of the most recognizable beauties on the planet, lip-syncing in place of George. This resulted in a difference in opinion between George and the label over how the album was promoted.

New York, Aug. 26, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Violinist Joshua Bell and cellist Steven Isserlis are joined by two acclaimed musical forces - pianist Jeremy Denk and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, of which Bell is Music Director - in a landmark joint recording, For the Love of Brahms (Sony Classical).  Available September 30, 2016, the new album is a unique project that features works of Brahms and Schumann that Bell calls "music about love and friendship."

A personal, deeply affectionate impulse frequently sparked the music of Johannes Brahms and his mentor, Robert Schumann – often including their mutual friend, the violinist and composer Joseph Joachim. It clearly drove all three works on For the Love of Brahms.

Bell, Isserlis and Denk unite here in Brahms's first published chamber work, the Piano Trio in B Major, Op. 8 in its rarely performed original 1854 version. Isserlis also joins Bell - as violin soloist and director - and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields in Brahms's last orchestral work, the celebrated Double Concerto (for Violin and Cello) in A Minor, Op. 102. Bell, Isserlis and members of the Academy also offer the first recording of an unusual coupling: the slow movement of Schumann's rarely heard Violin Concerto, in a version for string orchestra made by Benjamin Britten, who also added a short coda. 

"I met Steven almost 30 years ago at a music festival, and he has been my close friend and frequent chamber music partner ever since.  Jeremy and I have also shared a long-lasting friendship and we have recorded and performed together for more than a decade," states Bell. "Therefore it is fitting that we all come together on this record to play music that is so deeply rooted in love and friendship." Earlier this year, Bell, Isserlis and the Academy performed the Brahms Double Concerto to critical acclaim on an 11-date European tour, which Bell play-directed. The tour also featured the Schumann, and this recording followed. "Steven and I have performed the Double concerto of Brahms many times over the years, and I am so pleased that we found the perfect collaborators in the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields so we could finally record this piece that means so much to us," adds Bell.

In the liner notes he wrote for For the Love of Brahms, Isserlis echoes the belief that Brahms's early piano trio is suffused with his profound feeling for the Schumanns – Robert as his mentor and Clara as a lifelong friend and inspiration for whom Brahms nurtured a volatile yet unfulfilled love.

Both Schumann and Brahms wrote their violin concertos for Joachim. In the 1880s, however, a misunderstanding ruptured Brahms's celebrated friendship with Joachim. Brahms's "peace offering" to Joachim was to write the Double Concerto with him in mind, a gesture that repaired, even if it could not fully restore, the friendship.  Clara Schumann referred to it as 'a work of reconciliation'. 

"It was fascinating to explore in this album the extremes of Brahms' creative career, from the passionate declarations of his youthful trio in B major to the late Double Concerto, his mellow, affectionate farewell to orchestral music. Since the concerto was written to celebrate Brahms' friendship of over 30 years with violinist Joseph Joachim, it is rather fitting that this recording should mark almost 30 years of close friendship between Joshua Bell and myself," observes Isserlis.

Bell also has a personal affection for Schumann's Violin Concerto, especially its slow movement – "it may be my favorite slow movement in any concerto," he says. Britten's version was made for a special performance at the Aldeburgh Festival in 1958. It allows the slow movement (which Schumann linked without pause to the final movement) to stand on its own.  Isserlis (who also plays the cello melody with which the movement opens) was intrigued to find this arrangement in the Britten-Pears catalogue; he got hold of a copy of the manuscript, and immediately sent it to Bell. Isserlis, Bell and the Academy performed it on the tour in early 2016 for almost certainly the first time since its premiere over half a century ago. 

For the Love of Brahms continues Joshua Bell's long and acclaimed partnership with the London-based chamber orchestra Academy of St Martin in the Fields.  Since 2011, Bell has been the orchestra's Music Director and only person to hold this title since Sir Neville Marriner founded the orchestra in 1958. Bell's most recent Sony Classical recordings with the orchestra include Vivaldi's The Four Seasons, Beethoven's Fourth and Seventh symphonies (Bell's first recording as Music Director), and a Bach concerto collection.

Streisand's vey first record album, 1963's "The Barbra Streisand album," which earned Grammys for Album of the Year and Best Female Vocal Performances, featured several Broadway standards. In 1985 Streisand released "The Broadway Album" and in 1993 "Back to Broadway;" both albums went multi-platinum.

With the longest span of number one albums in history - six decades - Streisand has recorded 52 gold, 31 platinum and 13 multi-platinum albums in her career.  She is the only woman to make the All-Time Top 10 Best Selling Artists list. With the release of her last album, "Partners," Streisand has had 33 albums make the Top 10 on the US charts.  She is the only female artist to have achieved this milestone, tying her with Frank Sinatra. With ten, Streisand is the female artist with the most number one albums in Billboard's history.

Tony Bennett Celebrates His 90th Birthday Today; Empire State Building Honors His Musical Legacy With A "Music To Light"  Show At 8:45pm ET

Starbucks will be playing Tony's music in all their retail chains throughout the day as well as special birthday wishes from celebrated friends. In addition to the lighting event, the Empire State Building will be displaying Bennett's original artwork in their Fifth Avenue Lobby exhibition space from today through September 6th.

Springsteen selected the songs on 'Chapter and Verse' to reflect the themes and sections of 'Born to Run.' The compilation begins with two tracks from The Castiles, featuring a teenaged Springsteen on guitar and vocals, and ends with the title track from 2012's 'Wrecking Ball.'  The collected songs trace Springsteen's musical history from its earliest days, telling a story that parallels the one in the book.

Recordings from Steel Mill and The Bruce Springsteen Band feature musicians who would go on to play in The E Street Band. Solo demos of "Henry Boy" and "Growin' Up" were cut in 1972 shortly before Springsteen began recording his debut album, 'Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J.'

The surviving member of one of music's most successful and revered bands, the Bee Gees, (formed with his brothers Robin and Maurice), has kept In The Now a family affair, writing all the songs with his sons Stephen and Ashley.

Produced by Barry and co-producer John Merchant, the album is only the second solo effort of Gibb's career and his first album of all new material since the Bee Gees final studio album in 2001. In The Now is an impassioned solo effort that signals a welcome return of one of the most identifiable and versatile voices in the history of rock, pop, and R&B. The 12-track album was recorded in Miami with the same gathering of accomplished musicians Barry assembled for his acclaimed 2014 solo tour.

As a record producer/songwriter, Barry has been instrumental in creating milestones for other artists, ranging from Barbra Streisand's 'Guilty' album to Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers' country record 'Islands In The Stream' also, Diana Ross's 'Eaten Alive featuring 'Chain Reaction' as well as Dionne Warwick's 'Heartbreaker' album.

July 10, 2015 will see the introduction of “New Music Fridays”, an aligned global release day for new music. The move, implemented by labels, retailers and artists internationally, means that fans in many countries will no longer have to wait for days to get access to newly-released tracks and albums.
